"Have a heart, people! Sure, spammers are jerks, we can laugh at them and make fun of them, but don't you have any sense of decency?"
Never measure one's decency based solely on an expression of their emotions. Imagine PETA frowning over use of the term "I'm so hungry I could eat a horse."
If memory serves, it was relatively easy to get pirated Dreamcast games. I don't know many people that actually tried that more than once, though. Wasn't really worth it.
Then again, everybody I know would go buy the game if they really wanted it. It's a pain in the ass to wait for the download, burn it, and then hope its the right one. In 20 minutes I could go buy it.
I, too, am sick of being punished because of other people. What Sony should do is get their fancy ass copy protection scheme going and then say "Because of the copy protection measures we've put into this system, we're lowering the average price of games." The benefit here is that customers would be more willing to accept these mechanisms *cough*WinXP*cough*, but it also really would lower piracy. Cost has more to do with piracy than anything else.
"Last I checked, I was using rechargable NiMH AAs and AAAs."
Liar. I don't believe for one second that you use NiMH for every single device in your home. Maybe the shorter lived stuff like a Gameboy. Coincidentally, laptops are very short-lived devices.
" It's not amazingly useful, and not the best/cheapest camera you can get, but it's handy enough to sell more phones and attract the gadget crowd."
I understand your point, but wanted to nitpick your comment about the camera phones. They serve a very useful purpose: assuming you have one of these phones, it goes everywhere you do. This is in stark contrast to most digital cameras. You've got it, but only remember to bring it on trips etc.
Does this defeat your point? No, it strengthens it. I think NG's being a little too cynical here. I don't want to carry both a PSP and a dvd player on a plane. I carry enough shit with my laptop etc. If I can buy a movie or two for the PSP, then I'm set for that trip.
At least I think this supports your point. Sorry for the nitpick, but I got into it with somebody the other day claiming camera phones were completely worthless.
The original post was modded as insightful when he responded to that. Even if the joke was patently obvious, his response still earned him a +5, so it's not like he flew off the handle.
As for NG not having a sense of humor, there is evidence to the contrary. He constantly gets modded up funny.
"Get back to me when you are required to file a government document online, but it is impossible to use any tool other than a DRM-enabled PDF viewer on a DRM-enabled Microsoft OS."
Are you kidding? The Gov't is behind the times technologically. I don't see that happening any time soon.
"To be quite honest, I'm surprised that more organisations haven't jumped on board the open source bandwagon..."
I'm not. With money as a motivator, the perception is there that the company will produce a product to satisfy you and keep working to improve it to make more money. With OSS... eh... you have to kind of hope that other people have used it to solve the same problem you have.
Before firing a flaming rebuttal at me, consider perceptions as opposed to the way things are or should be.
I don't know a lot about how the system here works, but I do know that I lost my key to Q3. WTF couldn't they print it on the CD instead of on the jewel case? Ugh. If this system means that I won't need to keep an easily losable number around, I guess its okay. If not, well then I won't be buying it.
I mean, if they're going to use a system like this, why not just include a dongle?
Seeing as how this thread was started by somebody's comment that self-parking cars would make people stupider, I am a little surprised the responses are getting modded off-topic. At least nail the guy who started it.
I don't have a lot to say about the article itself, but I don't think outsourcing to India's going to last forever. Sooner or later, the time zone difference and language barriers will accumulate. Higher demand - higher wages. So when the higher wages collide with the cost of staying in touch, this option won't seem so valuable.
My opinion on this topic is largely based on my company's experimentation with overseas consultants. Somehow I doubt we'll pursue that again.
" You could play all your games from your neighbours house while the xbox is safe in your livingroom.... "
Funny you should mention that. I'm going to buy a second Game Cube so I can play multiplayer games on seperate TVs over the lan. That'd be cool if Nintendo had wireless! (Makes me tempted to get an X-BOX)
Okay, not the most interesting or insightful post, but the thing I've hated most about multiplayer console games is that you can't hide from the other player in splitscreen mode. This sucked a lot of the fun out of Goldeneye.
"Who said Microsoft shouldn't make a wireless adapter?"
Lots of people who frequent this place look for ridiculousness wherever they can find it. It's especially bad when Microsoft's involved. Suddenly, instead of embracing technology, a bunch of noisy people become minimalists.
About 2 years ago there was a story about how fast one can spin a cd before it shatters. As a joke, I responded with "I don't see why anybody uses anything faster than a 2x drive, all I have to do is wait longer!" Instead of being modded as funny like I had intended, it was modded as 'Insightful'. Go fig.
I'm not surprised he posted that. Lots of people have a tendancy to improve their ambient IQ by pointing out the flaws in something like they're devastating.
"Now if they were imitating a game by shooting at tractor trailers and trying to hit the trailer (those of which ther are none of in GTA3/GTA:VC) how the hell did they hit people."
I think we can chalk this up to playing on a fear that the media has created. Thanks to the media's irresponsible reporting of GTA (and EverQuest), uninformed parents start worrying that their kids, their little angels, their precious babies will be warped. So when these kids decided to do something stupid, they played on that fear by blaming GTA. Mommy will want to believe this because it doesn't reflect badly on her. It also makes her believe that her baby is a good boy, just had a bad influence.
It's hard to read stories like these without being cynical.
" Granted... its a cool gimmicky toy... but for 600USD!!!"
I hate comments like this. It's as if people think price is a constant. There's never consideration given that when a new product is launched, it is targeted to the early adopters group. R&D costs are made up, the product is improved to expand into a greater market, and new cheaper versions are made.
You are not the target. There are a few people out there (including myself) who thinks a device like this is a god-send. Okay, you can't see it. Don't worry about it, you're not the target yet. Wait until this thing comes down to $300 and it talks to your TiVo.
I'm a little surprised nobody pointed out that their webserver is running on Windows 2000 + IIS 5.

I just had this happen yesterday. Man I should have subscribed or sommething because I could have sworn the rule was 10 seconds.

Kindly fuck off.

"Newsflash: 20 days before the official release date of WinXP, a no-activation version was already installed in millions of PC worldwide."
Yeah, it was the corporate edition that was installed. Somehow I doubt IBM's going to buy 1,000 copies of Half Life for the employees to use.

You're just begging for another dupe-fest on 04-01-04.
Offtopic? I'd venture a guess that somebody with a mod-point didn't get your mirror joke.

"The whole idea of Wireless networking relies on moving around place to place, not too viable with a static console."
Eh? Why? I kinda thought the idea behind wireless networking is that you wouldn't have to connect stuff with wires. Am I being too literal?
"Agreed. There are those who think Microsoft sucks, and those who think Microsoft blows." ... and those who don't want to marry Mozilla.
