"I would gladly shell out the money to see the extended edition in the theater."
I would if the picture wasn't as grainy, the seats were more comfortable, I could eat a nice dinner with it, if there was an intermission for a bathroom break, if there wasn't anybody else in the theater, and if it wouldn't bankrupt me to do it.
Err.. you probably have a better theater than I do, I'll stick with the DVD.:)
"That's what Microsoft said too; that's why they sued Lindows. But of course, anyone who suggested that they might just be right about the confusion got flame broiled..."
What really irks me about the anti-MS sentiment on this topic is that it's WAY too late to do anything about it. MS owns the trademark regardless of whether or not they can put a (R) next to it. It'd take years to un-weld it from people's minds. At this point, setting it 'right' would potentially put a LOT of consumers out there in a position where they have to be unnecessarily careful. That's exactly why this whole trademark system was put into place to begin with. Oh, but we MUST SCREW MICROSOFT! BUAHAHAHA!!
Lame. The really really really stupid thing is that Lindows could never ever claim they landed on that name by accident. Their maliciousness in this case needs to be a factor in this as well. They cannot possibly ignore that even if MS had no legal right to trademark Windows years ago they would still be confusing people. You don't want Lindows to win this. It would set a precedent that would give MS the power to do the same thing to somebody else (i.e. Palm). Bad bad bad.
It was originally called Lindows. Imagine how confusing that would have been: selecting between Lindows and Windows in the OS box while config'ing your machine. Not even the screengrabs would have been a dead-give-away. "Oh, must be a typo."
"It should be patently obvious that if Windows XP requires that much effort to use securely, it means that the software itself is insecure by nature, and you probably shouldn't be using it."
And Linux is better? It's not secure. You still have to install patches and updates and the like. You have to put the work in either way, might as well go with the OS that does the things you wanna do. In other words, us gamers are not swayed by your argument.
"Fifty percent of those problems are IE problems."
And, in an earth shattering coincidence, it's also the main app that actually goes out to the net and pulls data down. Other browsers need be very wary of this issue as well. Just ask the Mac users out there that thought they were downloading Word 04.
You guys are taking girl advice from this guy? Here's an excerpt from his livejournal:
"I drove a coworker/good friend home tonight. On the way back, I got to thinking about all the times I've been called a dork. On every single occasion, I had done something really funny, usually embarrasing. "I'm proud to be a dork!" I thought to myself. I had a pretty good drum solo going on against my steering wheel. I stopped at the light and there was a car next to me. From the angle, I could see a little bit of the driver's face. Not a lot. But it got me thinking "I wonder if I can tell she's cute just from this little patch of face." All the sudden HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONK.
Shit. That came from my car! My drum solo had put me into an awkward position. I got her attention. She looked right at me! I looked back at her with like Ó_Ò eyes. I just sank in my seat shaking my head. On the last glance, she was laughin. Yep, I'm proud to be a dork.
I can vouch for that. He was particularly vocal during MS's anti-Linux campaign not all that long ago.
NG isn't an MS fanboy or shill or whatever you want to call him. If he is anybody's shill, he's Nintendo's. One day he will describe himself as an unnoffical spokesman for Nintendo.
"Which PC games do you envision yourself having more fun playing with a stylus or chintzy control pad?"
Seeing as how this is about a portable system, the real question is: Would you rather have that interface, or just plain not have it like the case with the PSP? The stylus is about as close as you're going to get to a mouse on a handheld system.
"What's going to make or break this handheld battle...is battery life"
I'm not so sure about that. If the battery life on either is more or less acceptable, then it'll come down to price and games. Nintendo picked a good strategy here by adding an additional interface capability to the system that has strong potential. Simply put: You will have games on the DS that could never be ported to the PSP.
"In fact, most of the games I saw for the DS at E3 made very minimal use of the 2nd screen. Oh look, I have a menu permanently open."
You have a menu and/or map that the stylus can be used to interface with. You didn't think that was cool? I did. They could actually port Starcraft to that machine and it'd be halfway decent. You can play wirelessly (maybe even on the net?), too. Slick.
" I have that same model motherboard in one of my Linux boxes and Mandrake recognizes the onboard sound with no problem."
That is precisely one scenario. I, however, have had the exact opposite problem getting video to work. Not only could I not get it out of 60hz mode, but I couldn't get the dual monitor setup to work like it should. To the best of my understanding, I followed the instructions to the letter, but since I haven't spent years in the Linux would, I haven't a flippin clue what stupid newbie mistake I'm making. Sure you have all the access to the innards of Linux, but man, not all of us have that high of interest level. Microsoft gives you the opposite situation, they focus on the UI and making that navigable. The gotcha there is the opposite of Linux's: You have little way of knowing what's really going on underneath. So if that UI doesn't work, blammo.
I realize it sounds like I'm being dismissive of your complaint. Not really the intent, there. Just pointing out that the grass is always greener no matter which side you're on. I'd be less against Linux if I could stand using it long enough to get into it like a lot of people here have.
I've recently moved to California, and I'm thinking about changing from ATT&WS to Cingular. (Comments on this particular switch are well appreciated...) I've been kind of going back and forth because Cingular has a better rate plane, but AT&T has the cooler phone. Well what has clenched it for me is that I went by the ATT store and they had a hand written sign saying "Computer's down, we can't play with your records." About a month earlier, I called them and their computer was down. Uh... not that I think their computer has been down a month, but that seems awfully frequent.
So is Cingular any better, or is the grass just greener?
"Why do you want to assume that someone has already thought of all the good ideas, and so you shouldn't think of ideas yourself?"
In this particualr case, I'd say you're right. When I read his post, though, I remembered this other guy a few months back that thought Nasa was a bunch of total morons because they didn't think of something as obvious as what the guy in the parent post here mentioned.

"In case those of us with linux on our desktops reply?" ... and tell us you finally got copy/paste working?
No no, he plainly demonstrated the ignorance he was describing.
"How many of you here ran MINIX, before, say, 1988? "
I can't remember, I was on girlfriend #2 by then.
"Darl McBride. Face it, none of the rest of us come even close to make up such tall tales of Linux development."
I dare somebody to mention the phrase "ready for the desktop"!
"This is great ! If DELL is putting their weight behind that will be a major policy shift for *many* corporations."
Just like when IBM did it?

Yeah I learned that from Benny Hill, too.
"So Family Guy is cool around here, but Zelda is objectionable."
Yeah, I wish my brain operated on such a high level that cartoon-esque graphics made me violently ill.
