But I have never spent more than $800 total on any system I've built. Frankly an $800 system is a lot for me. I am jealous of people who spend over $1000 on a computer and it is no big deal. Computers are my life... but I can't afford to ever have even close to the best. I have to settle for crappy to mediocre. It's not fair.
The earlier versions of their FinePix line used Smartmedia and now the newer ones use xD cards, so they must know what they're doing. Fuji makes awesome cameras for not too much $$$ also!

Because you can NEVER be quite sure of what files are being manipulated when you are using a GUI.
Why use a middleman when you have access to the source?
I can't stand reading books on the computer screen... I think it is a matter of screen quality and distance. I prefer having a book with excellent resolution in my hands which I can hold only a foot away from my eyes.
Same thing with debugging code, it is always best to make a printout to get a proper overall "feel" of the code in question.
Am I the only person that immediately downloads any trainers and cheat codes that I can find for a new game? I never play games without them... because I would rather play through a game quickly just to see the sights and do crazy stuff without fear of death.
The fonts in Firefox 0.8 were fine, but with 0.9 and 0.9.1 the fonts look terrible. I've tried changing my default fonts, changing sizes, enabling/disabling anti-aliasing/hinting. I've heard that they switched the system that handles font rendering (either through gtk or gnome or something), but in my opinion it is considerably worse now. Hope this gets resolved before 1.0 hits!
Too many support calls is the MAIN REASON I install on many peoples computers. No pop-up hell, less viruses, no screwy active-x things causing crashes. I have come to hate IE because of the constant support required to run it.
I just want LCD monitors to come down in price already! I don't want to pay $600 for a 17" LCD monitor when I can pick up a 21" regular monitor for around $250.
I have used KDE, Gnome, fluxbox, XFCE and IceWM at different stages of my Linux use, and in the end it seems that IceWM is my favourite, fast environment for getting work done. I mean, KDE and Gnome are both bloatware, fluxbox is a bit too minimal, XFCE is a bit to awkward, IceWM is just right. Also, don't forget to install iDesk if you want desktop icons on a minimalist system.
this is like from 1998 or something... I mean, come on, I've been on cable broadband since then and the price has always been comparable to high-end dial-up service. I know these days you can get unlimited dial-up for $9/month CAD, but who wants that shiat? Would rather pay $30/month CAD for speed.
1) Make sure you are running the correct / best driver for your particular video card
2) Make sure your partitions are all something like ReiserFS with optimally tweaked settings (distro's like mandrake do this automatically for you). DO NOT RUN EXT3, it will cause your whole system to run super slow!
Other things you can do....
- go thru your startup services and turn off unnessary services (also remove from boot time)
- buy more ram, the less swap space is accessed, the faster your system
- use only 7200 (or higher) speed hard drives
- don't use KDE or Gnome, instead go with fast (but familiar looking for windows user) GUI's like IceWM

I believe using the feet to mouse around while typing with ones hands is the ultimate solution.
batman!

The obvious choice... I mean, were there any other commercial games released this year for Linux?

I don't think EXT3 is that great... it is painfully slow when compared to something like ReiserFS. ReiserFS4 is the future.

Is where this company will be buried when they die. Soon.
and after a hefty session of downloading movies, mp3's, games you need to distribute these to other computers in your local network.
Sick.
get my point?
-mac computer with OSX, about $1000
-time spent to learn a whole new system (software and hardware)
Switching from Windows to Linux:
-time spent to learn a whole new system (sofware only)
You tell me, which is the less painful choice?

Gee, I just use the internet to research topics about which I know nothing about. I am web-surfing, data devouring junkie.
RIP Mike.
After all the effort everyone has gone through to get rid of lead-based paint on the walls?
First, I can't install a new theme (my favourite is Pinball), the .jar files on the themepage do nothing when I click on them.
Second, when clicking the "Browse" link on a web page, the captions are missing from the buttons on the file browser.
Third, the fonts are all messed up. It is not using the proper font as specified on a page.
I will go back to using 0.8 which is working perfectly for me.
I can't believe i didn't know about this tweak. And I thought I was already surfing at full speed!

There's probably more.
