    Sorry, but that's just wrong. Not only is there speculation that NK currently has missile technology capable of hitting Hawaii and Alaska (as you seemed to suggest) and that this technology will be capable of carrying a nuclear warhead within a year (if not already), there is also speculation that within two to three years they'll have missiles capable of hitting Washington, California and Oregon. And if you think the so-called "Missile Defense" system would be any help against such an attack, think again, because it's not even semi-operational yet and pretty much everyone admits it's not ready to counter an actual attack. So, while you may be somewhat correct in your statement if North Korea launched an attack on the U.S. today, the overall sentiment that North Korea could never and would never is not only dangerous but naive IMO.

    Well, sure either write it or don't write it. Though, I have to say there are already a ton of novels like this out there.

    "Spares," in particular, comes to mind.

    But, by all means, write your novel. If it sucks, then at least you'll have enough knowledge to make the second one better.

    I think that's unfair. Someone with a website selling honey that they make in their backyard isn't necessarily going to be an expert with spam protection software, but that doesn't mean that they deserve to be punished with a bunch of spam in their inbox.

    I'm not trying to be contradictory, because I believe what you're saying mostly makes sense. But, if it were me, I'd take the prize over patents. I know one of the best ways to stimulate development in AI systems is to create an environment relatively patent-free, at least in the beginning.

    I've thought about it a lot, and I honestly believe this would be a hopeless endeavor. Not just for me, but for anyone who attempts it.

    I believe this because the forces of willful ignorance and arrogance are too strong in many parts of the U.S. for any reasonable person to counter. I say this with all honesty.

    He does get the self-gratification of having created something revolutionary. Not that that pays the bills, of course. He should be rewarded more than he has been, but isn't it also good that optical storage development has moved quicker without some of the restrictions it might have faced had the patents been effective forever?
    I'm not saying that patents are bad, but I also think it's good that they have limits. And I still think this guy should get more recognition.

    Smart businesspeople? In order for them to sell stuff like that, someone has to ask for it. If someone wants to get addicted to some drug and die young then that's their business. If someone wants to sell that person drugs then that's smart business. I'm not saying it's morally upstanding, but it is how capitalism works.

    I hope you're just using this as an example of a rather twisted viewpoint. The courageous people who died in Tiananmen Square were peaceful demonstrators who were killed in cold blood. I don't see how anyone could conscionably justify something like that.

    Someone should really find prior art for this. I'm sure it existed in some form. That way it's null and everyone can make recommendation systems, which is really a common-sense idea in the first place.
