  1. the google IPO will spawn an new gold rush on Google Considering IPO Auction Online · · Score: 1

There are many companies that could IPO today but are waiting for google to test the waters. After google goes public, which will definetly happen if they want to compete with M$, then we will see many other companies file for an IPO. Google's IPO could impact the entire industry. Confidence will increase, others will go public and hopefully the number of available jobs increases as well.

  2. why trademarks need protection on France: No Google Text Ads For Trademarked Words · · Score: 1

I'm posting late but here's some useful info. Claiming exclusive rights to trademark terms is nothing new. It's a policy followed by google, overture, did-it, and most other pay per click engines & arbitrage companies. Today in google adwords, an Advertiser (ex Honda) can have google remove someone's ad if they see the word Honda being used by an unauthorized person. It's common for say Kawasaki to buy the word Honda - the end result being a user searches for Honda, finds a Honda ad, clicks on that ad and goes to Kawasaki.com. Obviously this is a bad. Also - Honda may want to bid on its own name and in doing so Honda should not need to compete to buy its own word. If I am Honda then I want the lowest CPC possible - paying a high CPC because thousands of other people are bidding on my trademark term is not reasonable. Here are two examples supporting the courts decision to uphold trademarks via search. Supporting trademakers is definetly in your best interests if you are the owner.

  3. Re:bugzilla on How Do You Manage Requests in Your Organization? · · Score: 2, Insightful

We originally used bugzilla to track software bugs. It's now used for a dozen different processes. Everything from IT requests where someone's desktop breaks, emergency hardware failures, business analyst questions, etc. We're an ASP that needs to be up 24x7 - when an emergency issue is created then the right people get pages. I would definetly recommend bugzill for a company that's 50-250 people.

  4. free software is not the answer to unemployement on Computers, Unemployment and Wealth Creation · · Score: 1

Ok, time to poke some holes in this article.

Write free software for individual industries
I have not heard anyone lose a job because their company could not afford the necessary software to run their business.

Make devices more responsive and easy to customize
More technology is not always better. Not everyone needs a PDA just like not everyone needs an organizer from franklin covey. People should be concerned with improving organization and it may or may not come in the form of a PDA. If you were to take a poll of unemployeed people for those that use PDA's vs those that do not use PDA's then you would probably find that those with PDA's are more likely to keep their job - the result would mean successful people like to use PDAs, not that PDA's drive success.

Create a truly public key infrastructure
Again - I have not heard anyone lose a job because they could not afford to pay their phone bill or buy a plane ticket.

Finally - technology can help but there are more important issue. My guess is /. found this article, searched for "open source" and decided to post it without reading the content. Technology is to a large extent why we are here today. Tech caused people to get lazy and overlook basic fundamentals. The AOL/Time Warner merger is a classic example. So far as a solution to unemployment, who knows but free software and PDAs should be the least of your conerns. Innovation, motivation and education should come first.

Look at the big picture. He finds a security hole at his company. The company lays him off. He emails their customers with info on the security hole and how to exploit the hole. The result is what was once a potential problem with potential victims turned into a real problem with real victims. I feel for this guy because the company knew about the problem and did nothing to fix the issue however that doesn't give him permission to throw gasoline on the fire.

  7. Two wrongs does not make a right... on Talk About A Security Hole, Go To Jail? · · Score: 1

This is not a case about exposing a security hole and going to jail but the headline makes it seem that way. Read the article and you will see that this guy deliberately told people about the security hole with the intention of causing harm. His reason for exposing the security hole seems more to do with getting revenge on his previous employer than helping the company fix the problem. Prison time is what he gets for acting so childish.

  8. Get over the lazy attitude. on Getting Back Into Shape While At The Office? · · Score: 1

There are no cliff notes to getting in shape. It takes effort. First thing you need to do is set a realistic goal. If your goal is to get rock hard abs while working in the office than you're over estimating yourself. Second thing you need to do is set aside time to reach your goal (outside of the office of course). I used to work 10 hours a day and put in an hour a day in the gym. It's doable - it's not for everyone, especially if you have a family but where there is a will there is a way. Last thing you need to do is think healthy. Cut back on caffine and fats. Eat more greens and health bars. Don't bother cutting back on beer. Going without beer is out of the question as far as I am concerned and don't let anyone tell you differently!

Basically you get out of it what you put in. If you're only willing to exercise within the office then get used that gut because it's not going to dissapear. On the other hand if you can grow some balls and hit the gym on a regular basis then the sky is the limit.

  10. another notch in Yahoo's belt on Yahoo Buys Overture for $1.63 Billion · · Score: 1

It will be interesting to see what happens to Overture's distribution channels. Overture currently distributes paid results to yahoo, excite, hotbot, go.com, altavista, msn, and lycos. Will Overture limit its distribution partners to just Yahoo? If so then that means more business for google because companies like hotbot are going to want paid results. If not then yahoo is entering new territory by competing with google paid results on portals other than Yahoo.

This aquisition is interesting because Yahoo is now one monster of a company that has a very wide range of services. They offer paid results (overture), organic results (fast), Y!Stores, Y!News, Y!Personals, Y!Real Estate, Y!Travel, Y!Auctions, Geocities, Y!Mail and on and on. Google gets kudos for being a leader in search marketing but they are now where close to offering a similar range of services as Yahoo. Yahoo will have plenty to fall back on if they lose the search war to Google.
