  1. here is a similar case on Is Data Mining for Product Pricing, Illegal? · · Score: 4, Informative

    Here is a related incident:

    http://news.com.com/2110-1017-944258.html

Bargain Network spidered real estate prices on homestore.com/realtor.com and posted them on the bargain.com website. Homestore sued and the case was settled out of court. I wish it was not settled out of court because that would set up a precident.

In my opinion you are asking for the problems. Taking a case like this to court and winning would be difficult. At the very least it would be a serious legal expense.

The last time I checked the rules for Froogle you had to be the actual merchant that ships the product in order to show up in their index. If you are spidering a merchant then you are an affiliate, the products do not originate from you so you would be exluced from Froogle. Froogle does not allow you to sort products by price - so obviously what you plan on doing is different. Froogle also gives merchants the option to be excluded from their index.

My advice is this - get a lawyer because one will surely be contacting you. Familiarize yourself with these phrases: false advertising, breach of contract, and unfair competition.

These days they can get away with paying $50k for someone with an MS in CS. Technology is still improving, it has always been and will continue to do so. Hopefully the economy picks up enough to where the unemployment rate for engineers is no longer an embarassing statistic...fortunately I have been part of a company that's been doing well over the past few years but ugh...today would be a dismal time to enter the job market.

It needs to be said here is that BI is a new field and it is evolving. Are 100 million people going to use data visualization tools on a daily basis? Probably not however one can say that the adoption rate of such tools will increase in 5 years. I used to think that BI was just marketing spin until I started doing it a few years. Basically 10 years ago BI was not possible - companies could afford to create their own terabyte databases then mine that information. Today that is possible and tools such as Oracle Discoverer allow non-technical employees to execute complicated queries. That itself is crazy and it gets better. BI will make the decision making process faster and more accurate. Getting there will take time but it will happen. Dashboards are already a common name. For a glimpse into the future check out the following sites:

My favorite is the sector map offered by SmartMoney. It's an awesome tool however it is pricey and put this in front of your average sales person and they will freeze due to information overload.

It runs on a separate machine under linux and gives the user a birds eye view of the map. Over the years it has become fairly complex. At the moment it requires a program on the computer running the everquest client to read the key from memory, it then sends the key to the machine running seq and that machine uses the key to decrypt the everquest packets.

Although you already answered your question, people feel like they always have to look over their shoulder to avoid getting fired. Bottom line - your company is the problem. No amount of booze, yoga, flex hours, massages or magic pixie dust are going to increase morale. Odds are the stigmatism from laying off 300 people is still in the air. Consumer - you, me, the one who lays down their credit card for a product.
->Advertiser - ex. stores.yahoo.com. They produce a product to sell.
-->Affiliate Network - ex. BeFree, CJ, LinkShare. These guys manage the relationship between Advertisers and Publishers.
--->Publisher - These guys find things to sell on stores.yahoo.com and buy eye balls from search engines like overture and google.
---->Search Engine / Ad Network- ex. google.com, overture. These guys sell search placement to Publishers and provide the search engines for those ads.

Before Overture bought Altavista, Overture was just an Ad Network. They took money from Publishers and gave it to search engines like aolsearch, msn, etc. Now that Overture and AV are one company they are their own search engine, just like google is their own search engine and ad network. Anywho, as the money trickles down from the consumer to the search engine, the one who makes out with the lions share is the search engine. It's the only piece of this puzzle that lacks competition. If Overture is able to better compete with google then cost for search placement should decrease and everyone else will benefit.

I know plenty of nerds that are never going to make it into mehnsa nor spell it correctly. What makes a nerd a nerd is their social behavior. The dictionary defines a nerd as an unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person. Being smart has something to do with being a nerd but being a social reject is the primary reason. Ok, next rant. Is this author really a nerd? He writes like he is one, wants to be one, and knows them more than they know themselves. And what's up with the 1981 high school chess club picture? Is that really necessary to put on the front page of your personal site...20 years later? Does he look at that every night then pat himself on the back before going to bed? This guy is a tool but not a nerd.

Here is an interesting relationship chart that was created by Bruce Clay. It shows how google is the authority on searching the web. Big deal - we already know that google is an important search engine but think about google and their value to other companies. Google now sells products through froogle, sells advertising with ad words, and acts as a news portal. I think there is a serious flaw in education in America because it puts too much emphasis on college and not enough on ambition and creativity. College certainly should not be overlooked however America engrains the idea in peoples minds that college is the turning point to success. Ironically I know some young multi-mullionaires that either skipped college all together or received a joke of a degree. What made the difference in their life was their determination. For those that do get into the school of their choice, good luck. And to those that are rejected, do not give up because college is not your last chance to succeed in life.
