I believe my thoughts are best described by the closing lyrics to the Rolling Stones' "You can't Always Get what you want":
I saw her today at the reception In her glass was a bleeding man She was practised at the art of deception, I could tell by her blood-stained hands
And you can't always get what you want, honey You can't always get what you want You can't always get what you want, But if you try sometime, yeah, You just might find you get what you need!
There are several variables missing from the equation that they propose.
First is the one that everyone picks up on...the intimidation variable (sue enough people and win and others will panic and leave). There is also the number of people that will stop pirating because they have what they need and don't want any more. Then there are those that finally get a fast connection and learn how to use the software...more than enough to negate those leaving by choice. Next, you have those that have been sued, but damn the consequences, they return to share more files. Finally, you have those that light themselves on fire in protest...and die.
There are a number of off and on rates not in the steady-state calculation that led to the 2K+ years to get them all. There are also just those that die of natural causes while file sharing.
My guess is that the on-rate of swashbucklers is more than the off-rate and rapidly increasing (for now), which means the population is in an exponential growth and 2000 years is only going to cover about half or 1/3rd of the people still sharing in 2000 years' time...
Not only that, but he's responded to his own article about two dozen times and in a third to half of those cases, he's been modded up (everyone loves to hear the author talk about his own work).
So not only does he like pandering, he also likes karma whoring.
It is our huge array of massive weapons and offensive capabilities with forward bases in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere that *created* Osama Bin Laden!
We spend billions in so-called "defense" spending to bully the rest of the world into letting us into their markets and freeing nations (while leaving the resulting anarchy that you see in Iraq). Imagine that, we pissed some people off and a rich one with the skills to fight back has popped up!
If we spent a ton less on our military, more on our healthcare and education, and kept our goddamn nose out of other people's business (so long as it's not hurting us to do so)...then we'd be a lot more like Canada...and NOBODY'S blowing up anything in CANADA!!
Our current "strategy" enabled by our overwhelming military might is garbage and it (like Reagan) will spend us into a hole that will take someone like Clinton to get us back out of again. I can only hope that it happens in the next 4 years, so I can get a high-paying pharma job with the PhD I'm working on.
While it involves more of refuting the involvement of "The Matrix", this columnist in the same paper as the original story doesn't buy any crap that this kid wanted to kill because of movies/video games...but that it was his own sickness in the head that led him to suit up and head out that night.
What a crock. America was not in a position to push out into new territory in the 1810's. The British were continually destroying our free trade on the high seas by "searching for their sailors" who were few and far between on American ships (but had good reason to be there, since the British were whipping their men into sailors in order to feebly maintain sailing dominance over the rest of the world short of Spain). America signed because it wasn't in a position to fight, but if it cowtowed to the British assaults in the NW (via British supplied Indians) and in the waters, then it would have only been a matter of time before British forces pushed back into the colonies and found a financially and spiritually weak country. America didn't want Canada and it didn't want to be Britain again either.
Where's your proof of their desire to own Canada? Manifest Destiny was still years away and the War Hawks were only interested in fighting Britain to keep them off of our land. Most of New England (those with the most to gain in taking over Canada) was even AGAINST the War of 1812.
Besides, if you don't consider the Battle of Baltimore to be an outright victory, then you have clearly pointed out that you don't know what you're talking about. The Americans were able to survive a sustained bombing in the Harbor and were able to defeat the flanking forces arriving by land which left the ships with no option except to retreat.
The Battle of New Orleans was after the treaty, but the British didn't know any more about that treaty than the Americans did...so it's not moot.
Not true. The goal was not to be overtaken and prove that we were worth being treated better than a second-rate upstart colony. We were not overtaken and we were finally seen as an equal. The British were in need of a source of colonial revenue and sailors. They were absconding our ships, cargo, and sailors. They were arming the Indians against us from the NW. We declared war in order to teach them that we were a country to be reckoned with and they weren't quick enough to back down from their stupid policies. It is true that DC was torched, but Baltimore stood strong and as a result we have a national anthem that doesn't resort to putting feathers in caps and calling them macaroni.
They stopped attacking because it was more advantageous to cut their losses than continue to poke their nose in the chicken coop, just to get it bit off again.
No, the Americans beat the British when they were the strongest force on the planet. And in 1812 when they were weakened and looking to maybe pick on a disorganized fledging country they used to own, we beat them again.
Mr. Gates said, "Please give me one second, while I finish rooting in my couch cushions for the settlement money..."
Add to that its lack of edge-flipping (scrolling off into another screen) and Gnome 2 suddenly becomes my worst enemy when trying to be productive...
Here is Win95 reduced to about 33K..and if I reduce the color palette, I think I can get it under 25K at the same resolution...
if you have an ass(?) like goatse?
And the geocities site linked to slashdot has hit its data transfer cap...who didn't see that coming? Show of hands? Okay, you all can leave now.

It would have been nice to see exactly what the article was talking about, by linking to it in the summary...you know, because this is slashdot.
I'm sick and tired of spelling and grammatical errors. Really though, I think we all lost.
I'd rather change the system...then if you don't like the new one, maybe you would like to explore your residence options instead.

You all did exactly what good little do-bees do...you said "I'm not going to slashdot the site, I'll use the mirror!"...
A few thousand "I'll"s later and the mirror is dead, while the original site lives on. Congratulations.
Well, at least now I know I'm not the only geek who reads Sublime Times at Sublime Directory.com.
The next one could be Baltimore. Severn is my hometown in Maryland.
It's next-door to BWI airport.
My god...I'm eating Mac'n'cheese with cut-up hotdogs right now... /sob...

Now I can setup that anonymous ftp server for my 1 pirated mp3 for people to download! When will someone port KaZaA for me?

Someone should let them know that it doesn't matter what language you translate it into...their argument still doesn't make any sense.

The same rationale worked for the genome project...and here we are today with a fully sequenced genome to be parsed and studied.
