I was discussing 3D printing with the parts guy at the Honda dealership this morning. Like most people he had no clue that this tech even exists and what kind of impact it's going to be over the next 10 years. I told him it's only a matter of time before companies see downloadable 3D models as a threat and start trying to protect their designs. I also told him it won't be long before companies start screaming to have the patent laws extended like they are doing with copyright law.
Just make a keyboard with high copper content (copper, brass, bronze), any microbes on it will die... Just goes to show you that steampunk is the way to go with keyboards!
Why is he relying on such archaic equipment? There is far better equipment out there than what he is using. Even assuming he doesn't want to undergo some sort of implant, there is eye scanning tech, EEG devices, etc. They are even putting them in toys these days.
Link the EEG from a Force Trainer into a computer with a eye scanning device and a android tablet in front of him. He could use the EEG device to let the eye scanning computer to know when to start looking at his eye movements, it would track where he's looking at on the android screen interface and using either the EEG or a twitch to let the interface know when to simulate a screen touch. He would be able to communicate on a large tablet at least as fast as normal person using their finger to touch the screen. He could even have an app setup to control the chair movements or even to control a robot.
For that matter he could even have someone implant a control device in a tiger and use an android app to control the tiger to take out his enemies.:)
If you want to push the metric system, start with the meteorologists, weather broadcasts and such. If people are eased into thinking of the temperature in metric the other systems will be that much easier.
I'm all for the US changing to metric but in a trade off, I think a push should be made by the few left hand drive countries to convert over to right hand drive as it's used by a large majority of the world. They money savings by the auto industry would be huge.
The old phrase "No good deed goes unpunished" comes to mind. This is never more true than in IT. The more work you do, the more your expected to do, usually without any additional rewards, monetary or otherwise. If you do that then what's to stop them from expecting you to support this on top of your existing duties plus they'll start coming to you when they need other things done. If companies expect their IT people to do development work then they need to add free time to your schedule to allow you to do activities such as development.
I work on a help desk. I have seen more and more work expected of people in my position over the years. At one of the companies I've worked for over the years, a corporate big wig said something in a company wide email about why the company couldn't be more like Google. My thought is that the trend of micromanagement gets in the way of being more like Google. If companies don't put free time in people's schedules and a clear reward for free time work done then employees don't have incentive to do anything extra for the company. If employees come up with something important to the company then they should be migrated to work on that project full time.
And I bet he is one of the ones that called into a help desk during the Blackberry outage while it was being broadcast all over the news and he likely heard a front end message on the help desk line about the outage then stayed on the line to get help because he couldn't get email on his Blackberry.
I wish the source code for the original Red Faction would be released. The damage & map sizes could be increased for larger amounts of memory. Also the core of the game could be used for other types of games. I'd like to see it modded to allow portal jumps added to allow people to cross from server to server.
I've been with Sprint for years. They have some of the best plans out there. Every time my plan comes up for renewal I look at the other carriers and renew my plan with Sprint when I get a new phone.
My only big gripe about Sprint is the Galaxy Tab doesn't have unlimited data like their Android phones.
I've read on some sites that say Android has no way to revoke permissions after an app is installed. Had anyone come up with a way to revoke permissions?
And they still include a floppy port. I'd rather have a PCI bus than floppy port. I haven't had a floppy in my computers in years but still use PCI cards.
> How about a 100% chance of it hitting the moon.
Hitting the moon and knocking it out of orbit. We have the plot for the remake of Space 1999! We just need to add some bad science to the mix... Hummm, it crashes into a fusion reactor which combines with some unusual element that causes the moon to fall thru a wormhole at random times, pausing just long enough to explore new worlds every week. Space 2036! Of course that sounds a bit like Stargate Universe if you replace the moon with an ancient ship dropping out of hyperspace every week.
I work tech support and find it much easier to take people thru normal menu bar options rather than the ribbon thing. Office 2007 was installed on my machine and it drives me totally nuts. It's fine if people want to use ribbons and follow MS with OS design but make it optional, don't force people to use it. Not everyone likes it.
Nokia doesn't have a good track record at maintaining support to their previous Linux devices. I've owned a 700 and currently own an 800. Both models had issues. When I first bought a 700 I had to exchange it because the screen was DOA, the second one's screen eventually degraded into a colorful unuseable display. Again with the 800 I bought one then had to exchange it because it was DOA. While it hasn't died yet, they never seemed to correct problems with the OS that causes it to rapidly discharge the battery. Of course they aren't going to port Maemo OS5 to the older hardware, it's only for the newer device. I ended up buying a netbook and my n800 will probably end up sitting on a shelf somewhere as a clock, weather or photo viewer till it dies. I've sworn off buying Nokia products.
The thing is that there isn't a clear line between female and male. Being Female or male isn't an absolute thing, it's extreme opposite ends of human sexuality with subtle variations in between. Many people don't realize but there are many people that are in between but it's generally hushed up by the doctors, their family and society in general. Not only are there physical ambiguities of the genitalia and body but also various hormone and neurological variations, all caused by chromosomal, genetic and developmental conditions that would put someone in between the gender extremes. Being physically intersexed, transsexual, bisexual, lesbian, gay, dynamically gendered (changing gender expression with moods), transgendered, a butch straight woman, a feminine straight man, etc are really just part of being in between the gender extremes.
Just like boxing weight divisions break up by weight, I think a better choice is to break up the people based on size, performance and endurance tests. Have high performers compete in one category, mid-range and low range in others. I've seen women that could beat most men in a physical competition, men that wouldn't have a chance when physically competing with other men and many women. If you say one person had a genetic advantage over others why not have them compete with people at their same level of performance. Hell, why not take it a step farther. If people want to use safe forms of performance enhancing drugs, let them as long as they do it against people with their same level of performance. The drug companies could sponsor them.
I hate those ribbon menus!!! IT installed Office 2007 on my PC at work and it's annoying as hell. Ribbon menus are designed for idiots, not intelligent computer users.

Saw that one coming...

I think Paramount or CBS should sue Apple over the IPAD.
If Apple is the new MS, then that would make MS the new Commodore.

Looks a little like the Serenity/Firefly ship up on stilts.

Hopefully they'll stop this as AT&T and T-Mobile are the only major GSM players in the US.
You mean this is a victory for the Empire. Which makes Verizon and Sprint the only support for rebel forces.
That's be great but it better damn well support my Nostromo. I don't game on a PC without it.
So I'm not the only one that sees a link to Blake's 7 on this.

I was about to reply on this very same issue. I totally agree with you on this. Code and data is best reviewed in mono-spaced fonts for accuracy.

No, I just support them on a help desk so they felt I needed the same software the users have.
