>unless you made a mistake.
No. This is an entirely open question. My guess is that a "perfect" game of chess is a draw with KRP vs. KR (ie White has a material advantage but can't force a win). But that is only a guess. The simple fact is that we don't know, and never will know (the problem size is way, way, way, way, way beyond knowing) the value of a "perfect" game of chess.
>But who cares? It is a linear game.
No. It's exponential. Specifically, exponential with a branching factor of something averaging around 20 per ply. Pruning algorithms reduce the branching factor of a search to something between 3 and 4, but it is still exponential.
And, for what it is worth... Petrosian was a hack. Kasparov is the best chess player (human vs. human or human vs. computer) the world have ever seen. Tal, or perhaps Fischer, had the most style, but Kasparov would beat either over the board.
Yes, I know they are the same. Hear me out.
Sooner or later you will typo and do "x=NULL" when you meant to do "x==NULL". I know, I know, I konw... you are a smart programmer, you know the difference between "=" and "==", and you would never mistake the two on purpose. But sooner or later you will make the typo. Trust me.
If you get in the habit of always putting the constant BEFORE the variable, you will end up with an error that is caught by the compiler because "NULL=x" won't compile, as "x=NULL" will.
In the O.J. trial, it seems people overlooked hard physical evidence.
In the Peterson [sp?] trial, it seems people needed absolutely no physical evidence at all.
If CSI makes people trust physical evidence, and want more of it... perhaps that would be a GOOD thing?
If you look at the personality types which are well suited to nursing, they are almost the exact opposite of those well suited to engineering. In myers-briggs terminology, nursing is usually for ESFJ (extroverted, sensing, feeling, and judgemental) types, and engineering is for INTP (introverted, intuitive, thinking, and perceiving) types... So asking an engineer to become a nurse is very much like asking them to change the very nature of who they are. It won't work.
If you add up ALL of the profits made by th airline industry, during its ENTIRE existence, then you subract the current debt load held by the industry... you end up with a negative number.
The only reason airlines continue to exist at all is because the government keeps bailing them out.
This paper makes quite a few predictions related to artificial intelligence. Do people not remember that all of these predictions were made in the mid 1980's? Any time I see a paper that predicts AI will do [anything] within a few years, I have to laugh. For all the hype, computers are still horrible at anything we would call "intelligence". They can compute quickly and accurately, which sometimes gives the illusion of "intelligence". But until we can find a way to go beyond mere number crunching, these predictions about AI will continue to fall flat.
The third amendment is "No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law."
People don't siphen gas because there is a very real chance that they would be caught... by their neighbor... red handed... in the act.
I would bet every penny I have that NOBODY would download copyrighted material while the owner of the copyright was standing directly behind them. I've seen it happen. Like roaches scurrying from the light, people don't like to steal in front of the owners.
Even more simple, and with the added bonus of wasting their time is: Pick up the phone. The instant you know it is a telemarketer, SET THE PHONE DOWN BUT DON'T HANG UP. Just walk away. It usually takes them at least 30 seconds to recognize that you aren't there.
Final score: Your time wasted... a few seconds (can't be helped). Their time wasted... a few more seconds.

Refridgeration, a valid cost. Want it cold? Gotta pay for all the electricity it took to keep that thing cold for the two months before you bought it.
Did anyone else flashback to the FORMER technology known as OpenDoc [wikipedia] after reading the title of the article?
Talk about a bad flashback... [shudder]
No, TLA is Three Letter Acronym.

The Y2K bug was NOT a hoax. It was a valid problem that was (for the most part) solved in time. Big difference.
I believe the classic quote is "90% of the people use only 10% of the functionality of [software]. The problem is that everyone uses a different 10%."

I love it when computer folks comment on economics/politics/whatever. My favorite comment from the article would have to be:
The Soviet Union collapsed not because of communism or central planning, but because of corrupt accounting.
Yeah. Corrupt accounting. That was it.
The sig reads:
It's sure starting to look like Syria is queued up for the next liberation. s/Syria/Iran/
...wouldn't that mean Iran is replacing Syria? Your message would seem to indicate s/Iran/Syria.
(Wow, did I just play grammar cop on someone's SIG? Have I really become that anal?)
Doesn't make me feel stupid. Makes me feel *old*. There was a time when this stuff got my blood moving. Now... [yawn]

Perhaps you meant the second amendment?
Quick counter-question: How many tanks do the Palestinians have?
You use what you've got. The Israelis have tanks, the Palestinians have... nothing.
