i was about to say the same thing... slashdot is getting a bit rediculous in the last few days. What with posting stories about strange quarks 3 times a day, putting BeOS stuff in the BSD section and now they are not even reading the things they link to. They must be using the blind monkey method of approving stories lately.

  6. It has happened to me twice on Have Fujitsu Harddrives Been Failing in Record Numbers? · · Score: 2

One of our developers machines locked up. He rebooted and there was a bunch of garbled text where it was trying to detect the IDE drives. Nothing would fix it. I tried the drive in other machines and nothing got it back up. So the guy had to recode everything he had been working on for the last few hours after I got a new drive installed for him.

Then one day I got called out to a client site. They had a Linux server I installed for them. They said it was locking up. I told them to power it off and bring it back up. They did that. I SSH'd into the machine and it locked up about 30 seconds in. I told them to reboot it again and it wouldn't come up. They said "it is printing some really weird stuff on the screen." I dropped everything and headed over there. It was the same exact problem. I couldn't get the data off the drive. No bios would accept it. I noticed it was the exact same model. It was a 9.1 gig IDE drive by Fujitsu.

Needless to say, as a person with a lot of influence on what my clients buy, they never buy Fujitsu ANYTHING anymore.

Today the Microsoft board of directors approved a resolution that would give Balmer the OK to go in with military force if needed. Bill Gates was quoted as saying, "The actions of this PR consultant are frightening. We have to prevent things like this from ever happening again. Even though we caught her, we believe that she will continue to try and pass herself off as a switcher. Therefore I have given Steve full authority to use our Nukes." The US Government will not comment on their support for Microsoft but have made a blanket statement that anything Microsoft does in its own interest is its right. They recognize the sovereignty of Redmond. More news at 11.

Just because someone has an old version of software that may have some known exploit in it doesn't mean they have to upgrade to a newer version. For many reasons I wouldn't want that to happen. I use an older version of sendmail on one of my very low key servers that has no contact with the outside world. Simply because it has a config file specifically for it that does everything I need. Now if it expired and I was forced to upgrade I would have to rewrite everything because the syntax is different. I don't like being forced to do something like that when I don't have time for it.

If you are going to make me update because of a security hole, make sure your product is 100% backwards compatable with the version I am running. IMHO that is the way it should be.

I told him I would be much happier if Microsoft just crumbled and told him where he could put his propaganda. I forgot the name of the website but if I get that info in the mail I will put the info up somewhere. Jerk.
