My mother bought one for my dad's 60th birthday. I will tell you for here $250 dollars was the magic price point. I explained to her that for $50 more you'd get three times the storage. But to her $300 was just too much money...
I think that price is a lot of why people bought it, people wanted an ipod but didn't want to pay $300. For a lot of people, $250 put it just in range.
Hear hear. This is about the best idea ever. If we want to give handouts to contractors, this is the way to do it. Let's spend 50 years developing an orbital power network....
At the monent a tivo+ life time subscription is about the same price as a roll your own set top linux box. Most people would rather spend $250 + $12 a month or $550 on something that is "subscription encumbered" than $800 + lots of labor on something that isn't.
Yes, I was wrong. Sorry about that people, althouhg modding me down doesn't seem necessary...people make mistakes.

PHP is insanely easy to use. I think that is one of its biggest draws. I tried using JSP back in the day but it was really over the head of this artist. In terms of speed...well you're asking the wrong guy but I can't detect any difference between static pages and php pages (but my scripts are very simple). Products like vBulletin and Moveable type are very popular and seem to run at a decent speed and scale, so I think php is battle tested. Although the two web developers I know use ASP and JSP respectivly and don't seem to take PHP to seriously.
Well, obviously they provided Osama with aid, comfort, and support and had no intention of stopping. They made their choice; backed the wrong horse. The Taliban were both stupid and evil.
This is true. The taliban were stupid. I hesitate to say evil because its an abused word. But they were awful, awful people and i'm glad there gone. I still can't say that invading afghanistan was right. A lot of people needlessly died. I don't know but I'd like to think there was another way. I may be a bit naive though.
Yeah aren't we terrible. Enriching countries that would otherwise be eating dirt while paying monopolistic prices. The West are just a bunch of devils
I am sure the entire middle east is very thankful that the west is genrously preventing them from eating dirt. Most people in the middle east ARE eating dirt. The oil business provides little to no benefit to the average person in the middle east. The thing about oil is that it employs very few people, causes a lot of damage and it makes a very few people impossibly rich, thus perpetuating a system where a few people can run countries. What do you suppose finances all the unfree regimes in the middle east? With high unemployment and all the money and means to make more in the hands of a few princes its pretty damn hard for the people to bring democracy.
Gee. It's shocking that such an attitude would exist. Islam has done so much good in the last 100 years.
I think you'll find that islam is not the real issue in the middle east. Religion usually follows economics and politics, not vice versa. Poverty creates violence. Oppurtunistic people in the middle east have managed to blame america for the problems largely caused by those same people, directing popular anger away from the people that cause the problems.
Black ops marketing...you don't put it on your real server. You make it look real. You hope people stumble across it and talk about it. The people that come up with it don't read slashdot...
I'll give up css when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.(although I use tables if I need to do html at work for the reasons you listed, mostly users that won't upgrade) I code my personal sites with php4, and I understand how it is possible to seperate design and code with php, but it is a freakin chore. Css makes it all so easy. On my site I can write my php to generate my news section and it looks like this:
Before I used tables to layout and I had to code in a whole mess of formating nonsense, which I get to keep in the css file now. Its really great. I'd say that table formating is to css formating as flat files are to databases. Sure you can do the same with each, but the fancy way is so much easier, faster and flexible.
The only numbers you cite are from one state, the article you sent mentioned a lot of plans to improve the situation. The rest are anecdotes without context.
Your mention from Tennessee is not given in context. There is always a (real) concern that kids that start failing will completely give up. Which is bad for everyone. I am sure that Officer Johnson was trying to deal with this issue.
The Nashville schools were contemplating dropping the honor roll because of privacy concerns. I heard about this on NPR and the solution they came up with for now was sending permission slips home for the honor roll.
And no, 1337 speak is NOT ok for english papers. I can't imagine that there is an english teacher in the country that accepts l8r and 2 rather than too. Just because the language of children changes doesn't mean the standards don't.
Parents complain about all kinds of crap. That doesn't mean the standards of schools are changing.
I want some numbers, I am interested to know why there is this popular notion that our schools are failing.
I belive that the poster was trying to say (albeit not very clearly) that just because more accurate weapons result in less colateral damage, war still kills people. I don't know what that suicide point was about. I do agree that war is bad and kills people, and designing better weapons to kill people with is not really a noble persuit. I still think this DARPA project (and a lot of the DARPA research) is damn cool, and I'm an ultra-pacifist lunatic lefty. But I guess the geek in me can't help but be excited by autonomous off-road vehicles and powered exoskeletons.
"Hey, it works for the public education system, right?"
Do you know anything about education? What makes you think that public education is lowering its standards? What evidence do you have for this? What's the literacy rate in the us again?
But that is still pretty crappy in terms of efficiency. HMI film lights put out more than 75 lumens per watt. A 5,000 watt HMI (pretty common for film work...they come in 18kw) puts out 375,000 lumens with less power than your proposed wallpaper. Of course, its still way more power than you get from a wall socket and enough heat to make it very dangerous...
I don't know what the grand parent was talking about. 'Darkness' is a subjective quality that is used, not to cover up bad graphics, but for style. Making something dark is hard, because things still have to be visible, you can't just turn down the brightness. You have to make things seem dark, when most of the scene is actually very well lit.
The comments in that article are hilarious, a lot of "apple is dying" stuff:
There is no future in a $400 (about $250 too expensive) firewire-only (5% of computer users) hardrive-based (read: fragile) mp3 player. Any one of these critical flaws might doom the product - take them all together and you have another classic corporate farce....This just reinforces my steadily growing sense of foreboding about Apple. Yes, I've said this before and been wrong, but I'll say it again anyway. They're living on borrowed time. -DaveWood
Raise your hand if you have $400 to spend on a cute Apple device...
There is Apple's market. Pretty slim, eh? I don't see many sales in the future of iPod.

I'm just glad I didn't post on that story...a lot of word eating going on.
Why do you feel it necessary to ream this guy? I agree that most web development is pretty straightforward. But just becaue a moron like me can write a database driven site passably doesn't mean I can do it well. And a chimp may be able to write html, but he sure can't make it look nice. That takes skill and talent that ought not to be free.
For a while I live in Vail snowboarding "all the time". But to pay for this I had to take a job at a hotel, working 35 hours a week. So, yeah I got a lot of free time to snowboard but I had to work this crap job I hated. I was also totally broke and really the only thing I could do was snowboard (not cheap)...no money left to do other stuff I like. Then I moved to paris and worked in a hotel there. Boy, Paris is a beautiful city. I would have really like to experience it. But guess what? I had to work 35 hours a week and I made euro 8.50 an hour. I was too broke to enjoy it. I had to rent a room about an hour out of the city, because it was to expensive to live there. And my job sucked a lot.
Now I have a pretty good paying job as a 3d artist (which I enjoy doing for free as well) I live in Denver which is great. Sadly, I'm expected to work at least 50 hours a week (often more like 70), with two weeks a year of vacation. I get home from work at seven, make dinner, watch tivo, read a little and go to sleep. The only time I have to do hobbies is on the weekend, provided there isn't too much housework. So I have the money to enjoy my life, but no time. Grr... You can't win in this world. If you find that magic job is ok enough to do forever, pays well and doesn't have long hours. Boy wouldn't that be great. And I guess it would have to allow you to live in a nice place too, right?
I think that's the first Fast Show reference I've seen on slashdot. Very amusing that show. Not a bad place for a reference. (I'd mod it +1 funny) But I think, in the interest of all we ought to make that the LAST Fast Show reference on slashdot. You know how these things get out of hand here.

I wasn't being sarcastic...although looking at my post I think it looks like I was. I really think this is a good idea.

Who is that? I'm interested to know, doesn't shock me.
see silentpc review for more info on how complex it can get. Read the forums to see how anal some quiet pc enthusiasts can be.
