    I'm a little confused here.. so his theory is that the extra genetic material is in the form of fractals, which are supposed to represent some sort of blueprint for DNA? How can a fractal be a representation of something else? Isn't a fractal just a non smooth geometric shape? Is he saying the blueprint is in the specific arrangement of the fractals?

    Always backup to at least one off site resource, whether it's taking a burnt cd home with you or simultaneously scp'ing data across a corporate WAN to several locations.

    If your data is absolute mission critical, consider investing in some sort of solid state media for backup, as it is normally more reliable than magnetic media.

    But the most important advice I could give to anyone would be..

    NEVER EVER TRUST A FLOPPY

    I work for a local ISP, and the competiton between other local ISP's for spectrum caused so many problems that everyone finally just registered a frequency. Except us, since everyone else switched we took over 2.4, but the interference problems persist, especially in residential areas with high concentrations of 2.4ghz phones. I hope this makes it to fruition, it'll make it much easier to find a good interference free frequency for more reliable wireless connections.

    I would justify it being posted here. It hasn't been found to be exploitable, even by the samba team. They have, however released a new version to correct this (as well as add a few features and fixes), showing excellent mode of quality control exceeding that which often even proprietary software vendors fail to meet, in an OpenSource model. Just a thought...

    That's because there is known working exploitable code to the IE Bug. Even the samba team wasn't able to craft an exploit for this Potential hole. This is more along the lines of developers showing excellent quality control..

    So what, they're writing DVD burning softwatre? Really, how is this something that I coudn't just do myself? Seems to me they are just gonna slap all your personal files together on one disc and call it your life.

    True it wouldn't be able to test servers for exploitablility, but at scan rates that fast, who needs to? Just run your expolit against all servers in the list you've found.

    LFS is the way to go to make old hardware new again, IMHO. Hardware is only as old as the software it runs, so going with an antique distro is just make your old computer old again. If you build an LFS machine, you can keep it useful while still keeping current.

    Also, have you thought about a thin client/diskless node setup? is a great example of one of the many type of distros like this...

    God damnit. It doesn't take an ISS consultant to figure out that the above stats + a slapper/scalper worm = Oh shit some monday morning when one arrives at work. Above stats + asiapacific spammers = Useless mailboxi

    Seriously, if these stats hold true it could streamline the whole process of scanning for exploitable hosts to a degree that if you're service is exploitable it will be exploited. Kinda scary to me..

    Actually I spend 5-10 seconds entering a time and a channel into a web based menu which I can use within freevo. And for all that "bother" I get to record ANYTHING that I can play, without advertisments, a paid subscription, or the ability for an outside source to arbitrarily change the features and abilities of my PVR. Features which all commercial PVR's lack.

    No I don't mean get a copy of MAME, I mean use software like VMware or Plex86 to emulate any of the less resource demanding games. Also, bear in mind Linux has a plethora of FREE games available, many of which I find more mentally stimulating than their win32 based counterparts. And about worrying if it will be user friendly for your kids, computers weren't too user friendly when I was a kid, but I lernt em anyways :) Seriously, just stick your kids on a Linux box and they'll 0wn your root in no time

    *sigh* I'll Bite, troll.. You can boot any distro up and write over the registry of a windows install existing on a FAT system, however NTFS only support read functionality and write is disabled in most kernels by default being that it WILL eat your data.
    On the other hand NTFS permissions don't mean jack in a posix system. So you could boot up to a live boot, mount the win partition and read any data you werne't supposed to.

    Take a closer look at the package. It's basically a TiVo-esque frontend to other packages. By them saying recording is not supported they are talking about recording fuctions within the front end. Several of the packages used have their own recording and encoding functionalitites. I use mplayer, xawtv, and a web based front end for creating cron jobs to record for those who asked.

    You are ill informed. There are a few open source PVR projects circulating already, not to mention the upgradeability you get with "rolling your own". And a PVR can be built for less than $300, and can include any feature that you want. Want your PVR to be a Web-TV box too? No problem..

    If you are interested in an open source PVR, check out Freevo. Don't waste your time writing apps for something unoriginal and proprietary.
