  1. Difference on Should Medical Apps Be Regulated? · · Score: 1

In a regulated world, you generally have to show that a product is safe and/or effective *before* release.
So if Apple has a category for "medical" apps, they could require some form of certification before they could be published.

At that point there's no need (or less need anyhow) for fines, because the snake-oil never makes it to market.

  2. I have a friend who works in CyberCrime. He doesn't talk that much about his job but the basic take is that it deals with a lot of things normal people who rather not think about or look at.
He's a cop, which seems a much better job that an Google. At least if you're a cop you get some person satisfaction when some of these sick f***s get sent to jail.

  3. Re:In a word: yes. on Should Medical Apps Be Regulated? · · Score: 1

AcnePwner was downloaded 3,300 times at a cost of 99 cents in the Android Marketplace. There were about 11,600 downloads of AcneApp from the iTunes store, which cost $1.99.

    3300 * $0.99 = $3267

    11600 * $1.99 = $23084

According to the settlement, Koby Brown and Gregory W. Pearson of DermApps are required to pay $14,294, and Andrew N. Finkle of Acne Pwner must pay $1,700.

    $3267 - $1700 = $1657

    $23084 - $14294 = $8790

Now granted some of this goes to Apple (and don't they have a vetting process, how did these make it through?).

But it seems that this crime is still fairly profitable, unless that amount was a fine on top of refunding any affected users (yeah, good luck).

Seems to me that the parents is right. These need to be regulated.

As for those saying "treat it like a website"... most websites don't charge, so they're more guilty of misinformation than being an outright scam.

When the content comes out a little after the game. However, what I've seen a good many people complain about is when 90%+ of the content is *already on the game DVD* and what you actually get for your money is actually an unlock code which turns it on. Sometimes also download a bit more content etc as well

This is in contrast to "expansions" in which you got a whole new disc of content. Think "Brood Wars" for Starcraft.

If it exists on the existing media, then it's not "new content", it's content left out of the game.

I had to double (and triple) check that when sending money to the south, because I'm fairly sure that sending it Northwards would have resulted in
    a) It never coming back to me
    b) Me ending up on some sort of watch list

Luckily a smartphone and a google search ensured I had the *correct* Korea, though I'm a bit annoyed that the bank doesn't have it noted somewhere.

  12. Too fast on Humble Bundle For Android 3 Released · · Score: 3, Insightful

Does anyone else feel like these are just coming out a bit too fast?
I mean, I like having cool, affordable, and charity-benefitting games and all, but it seems that the "Humble Bundle's" are cranking out every month or two.

Beyond that, we have FieldRunners which is... yet *another* tower defence game. It seems like the IOS/Android market are full of these. A bit more originality would be nice, especially since the earlier bundles seemed to be about games that were - while not the best graphically - often quite original in gameplay/theme (the rest in the bundle seem to fit this fairly well)

  14. Impossible task on Ask Slashdot: How To Best Setup a School Internet Filter? · · Score: 2

As a former school-district sysadmin, I'd say that blocking (bad) content from a school while allowing (good) content is nearly an impossible task. Obviously you can make a good effort, but it's an arms-race you can't win.

One should not underestimate the resourcefulness of a school full of bored teens. Hell, some of the most amazing stuff I've done was while I was in High School.

As an adult, it's not easy to pick this stuff up with the time available. Being young with an active brain and free time is a powerful thing, and a school full of semi-intelligent bored teens can be a pretty interesting place.

  15. Why are those considered dangerous hours?

  16. Must be different in Canada.I can't recall being asked what my mileage was when renewing my insurance.

They *do* have different brackets depending on your distance to work. Having =15km from work to home /w no more than 6 days/month over is a reduced rate, but overall driving for year doesn't seem to be a factor here.
Where you live, what you drive, your age, and probably tons of other stuff is though.

Perhaps in some nightclubs that may have gotten past, but in most I know the guy would have been feeling the dirt between his teeth after being bounced.
