  5. Personal Patent on Patents for the Little People? · · Score: 2

I remember learning about this one for literary material, and possibly software on a permanent media.

Put the story/software in a well-sealed envelope. have it mailed to yourself, date-stamped by the post-office. Never open the envelope unless your creation is challenged.

Of course in the majority of situations this won't hold its water in court. It does however provide low-case proof of the date you mailed yourself the plans/story/code, and thus when the idea came by you. If somebody else sues you for patent violation, you can then use I-came-first.

First time I heard this was before everyone became patent-lawsuit-crazy though. Other measures are definately recommended.

I suppose it depends on how this would spread. Since this is a deliberate genetic failure, as opposed to a virus, chances are it's not contagious but only spread via offspring and not via contagion. Since they likely don't mate with other fish, this should be ok. The alteration should only take place at the fertilization or "sperm" level.

Of course, the problem here is (as mentioned before) the alterned offspring cannot produce female offsping. Thus, the altered species may breed itself out before affecting the wild species.

How about known risk. I know when I go onto a roller coaster that despite all the past history, anything going that fast could in some way cause me injury. If you avoid everything just because of a possible risk, then life would really suck. Better to make the public aware than impose somewhat random or uninformed limitations.

If you know people who have died in auto accidents, does that mean you shouldn't drive?
Cars can cause accidents, TV can cause seizures. How many people were the 42 out of? If it's 42/100000000 that's lower than most things. I'd almost guarantee that there are a number of things you do every day that risk your life more than jumping in a roller coaster (despite the feeling that you're going to die every time).

Life is full of personal risks. We should be informed of the risks, and make our our decisions. Thus is the only way that we can lead a life of freedom - phorm
