I'm still running 10.10 because I can't upgrade to 12.04 until it stops randomly crashing; [from memory] I'm testing the nVidia 295.40 driver and that's still getting the odd crash (as in X crash... and I get logged out).
Am I just unfortunate in this? I've got a 9800GT video card btw.
Over recent years, I've been following such developments with great interest. However, I was under the impression that the plan was to use ears grown on mice and train them to scurry into position... have the plans been changed?
surely you mean, "as long as I can easily uninstall it"? I'm not one to complain about Canonical trying to generate revenue, and I'd leave the ads there initially, but if they annoy me, I want to option to easily remove them. Otherwise... new distro!
just read this article on Forbes. It looks like they've come to the same conclusion I have.
If they're going to continue their tradition of trying to do what Apple is doing, then it's pretty much the only logical step.
Logical..ish. Certainly wouldn't surprise me, but they've already got an almost MS branded phone with Nokia, and they still can't sell them. However, they do have a decent user based with Xbox (as opposed to Apple) and I don't think Apple or Google have conquered TV - yet! So if MS were being clever, they'd leverage the Xbox foot hold they've got, and Xbox live, and produce their own brand TVs with integrated MS stuff. They prolly won't do this until Apple or Google or someone else has taken the market 'cos MS can't get anything right these days.
People, mostly kids, are maintaining two accounts to section off various social circles. In other words, they maintain a page parents know about and and the real one they do not know about.
Funny thing is though, they'd probably be better off on G+ for that very reason. But I suppose they don't because FB has all the market share so no one switches until all their friends have...
I wonder if Google are targeting the "next generation"?
So, I took a look at Zorin OS and they lost me in line one of the "Tour". Advantage number 1..."No risk of getting viruses". Where have I heard that before? I'm not saying it isn't a great solution. I really know nothing about it at this point. However, starting your sales pitch with a claim like that is laughable.
From a technical POV it's a dumb statement, but from a real-world perspective it's likely accurate.
I'd agree... except I'm still finding nVidia + Unity 3D is pretty crash prone, at least running 64bit with my 9800GT it is. And being crash prone for me is kind of a big barrier to upgrading... which means right now I'm still stranded on Ubuntu 10.10 which isn't a great situation!
What do fake users gain by Like-ing a fake business page?
As I understand it, once they've "liked" the page, they can then post spam messages on that page.
The irony of course being that this effort is presumably worth-while to the spammers, and thus seems to confirm the argument that some advertising companies are making, that they get better results by just focusing on their own FB page and building a community and not bothering with FB advertising.
450000? so about 15 are real email accounts that people use.
I only skimmed TFA and it seemed to indicate that these were probably related to the Yahoo! Voice service... whatever that is.
As for their email, probably quite a lot of people do use it as some ISPs use Yayhoo! to supply their own-branded email. BT Internet in the UK for one anyway.
Who is forcing you to upgrade from 12.04 LTS? It will receive security fixes for years.
I'm stranded on 10.10 whilst I try to get 12.04 working... but I'm still getting random crashes with Unity 3D vs. nVidia. No idea if Canonical ever intend to upgrade "nvidia-current" (295.40)... so I've manually removed it and installed "nvidia-current-updates" (295.49), but I've still had a crash* so it seems the next best option available to me is the X-Updates PPA. So much for 12.04 being an LTS release though.:/
* by crash, I mean I get kicked out to the login screen.
Here's the problem. Why should I pay money to make my OS worse? Microsoft should listen to the criticism from testing and improve their product and then sell it for full price.
You shouldn't. But MS/Ballmer absolutely need to get new product out there to try to drive their numbers up, so Windows 8 is approaching RTM most likely because it's more important to get it out now than it is to delay it any.
It's doubtful corporates will be looking at Win8, so MS won't be expecting sales there. OEMs will probably have to ship Win8 on consumer kit, but that is unlikely to generate increased revenue. So I rather suspect the lower upgrade price is to try to salvage some kind of buzz/excitement/money from it.
But MS know that everyone will be looking at their Win8 sales figures 3, 6, 12 months after release, and they'll likely not be particularly good.
It'll be the same story with their tablets; not because there's anything massively wrong with them, but because they're too late and there's nothing compelling about them.
Oh... and next year, Ballmer will step down. And either they'll get lucky and someone with clear vision will lead the company to great success... or it'll all go HP-like.
It's only your problem, not theirs. When a company has a monopoly and 95% of PC sold worldwide come with that software, even if the whole world doesn't like W8, people will have it and pay for it nonetheless.
$10 for ethernet and a second USB port is a smaller premium(and, of course, better integrated) than pretty much any peripheral option, and some sort of networking is an extremely convenient feature. The 'A' seems like a very niche sort of device.
I think most nerds will want the model-B, but note that if you stick a WiFi dongle in the single USB port of a model-A, you do still have a fully network accessible device... but likely it'll be easier to do development for that using a model-B. The main "wins" for the model-A are (1). it costs less, and (2). I believe power consumption is quite a bit lower.... I seem to recall seeing a video where Eben indicated that the networking/usb-hub chip uses quite a lot of power on the model-B.
Better example: it's like wearing a woman wearing a headscarf in public in the UK and being extradited to France! Seriously, we must have strong extradition treaties with France so why not?!
I'd like an updated "The C programming language", although not necessarily by K and almost certainly not R! 'cos otherwise, I'll wind up buying some other book and I'll hate it because it's not as nice as K&R. And then I'll be all cross.:(
Use a print of goatse.cx and you'll always be safe in the knowledge that even if you forget to carry the print with you, you can still, at a push, access your phone!:D
On the off-chance you're still experiencing this, I had the same problem on an ASUS P7P55D mobo running Ubuntu 10.10; it would work for maybe a few weeks, and then no network and only a power-cycle would fix it.
For some reason Ubuntu was using an r8169 kernel module when it should've been using r8168; the problem is solved by downloading newer source from RealTek and using that. Oh, and then dick around with it every time the kernel gets updated! But hey, it works!

/me raises embarrassed hand!
apt-get remove unity-shopping-lense
That's nice and simple really.... so I guess I have no problem with this! Cheers!! :D
And, as long as it isn't too obtrusive in the UI,
surely you mean, "as long as I can easily uninstall it"? I'm not one to complain about Canonical trying to generate revenue, and I'd leave the ads there initially, but if they annoy me, I want to option to easily remove them. Otherwise... new distro!
Does is matter what country you're located in? (obviously, I'm eyeing the possibility of winning a tablet or a t-shirt!)

Do they need to add more LCD panels? :)
One MIT engineer was quoted as saying:
Fuck everything, we're doing five LCD panels!

MS doesn't have quite the market share it used to even on the desk/laptop. When you include mobile OS's it's not so good, and it's getting worse.

Looking at the zoomed-in screen shots in TFA, I can't help feeling that Apple's font rendering was better even allowing for their higher DPI.

I have Pages on mine and can type hundreds of works without any problem.
..but all your works are belongs to Apple!
No, I was actually thinking more along the lines of squatting down over the phone.... yeah, I guess it would be a bit of a stretch!
;)
