    Not so sure about that. We (the Dutch) are leading in telephone taps in the world. And local regulation is already wasting gigbaytes on mandatory ISP communications monitoring. And there have been numerous plans for CP filters and what not.

    So, this is just one win in the battle.

    But more importantly, innovation in entertainment is overrated. Games don't have to be innovative all the time. Quite often people want a similar experience as they had with a previous game: brand new story and environments, but similar gameplay.

    Fair enough :) But I work there and I feel it is quite fair. Ill tell you why: Microsoft treats me very well. I learn an awful lot working at Microsoft. If (or when) I moonlight, Ill use this knowledge. This will benefit me greatly. For me, its a fair deal.

    If the name Tolkien is Tolkien's imaginary property, that would mean that Tolkien made up the name. Wikipedia's page on Tolkien claims that JRR didn't made up the name.

    The ISO spec is not gratis, but the ITU spec is gratis:

    However, it's not the complete specification, it depends on some other specs which might not be freely available. So is a standard "Open" when you cannot read some of its dependencies?

    WinAmp is open source now? Did I miss that new item on /.?

    How to VLC, MediaPlayerClassic, etc. do it? They simply accept the possible patent lawsuits. There isn't anything to get from those components, because there is no company behind it with a lot of money.
