I've been wondering how plant and animal breeding is not an example of macro-evolution.

Wild strawberries are primarily for birds to eat and generally have a stronger and bitter taste compared to domesticated strawberries, their size is smaller concentrating the seeds on a smaller surface area. Only in the past 500 years or so have strawberries been domesticated to the way we now buy them in stores. Is this not an example of evolution? The plant has (been) adapted to prosper under different conditions.

I think in the strawberries case most of the intermediate plants were not kept, maybe records of them have been. But, if people don't keep their in-betweens why would nature? And I doubt that if you did search for in-betweens in this case it would be very easy to find them. Just like it being difficult to find fossils of plants and animals from even further back in time.

An interesting page that I read in the past which shows another and better written example is Carl Sagans' http://web.singnet.com.sg/~sctien/samurai_crabs.ht m Heike Crab which evolved a human face.

I am pretty sure I can copy for personal use in Canada, but does that extend outside to Japan and some asian countries? And does anyone have a good free recording software that they would recommend? I've used the shared(limited) version of Musicmatch Jukebox for about 10 discs and it has managed to screw up on 2 songs out of that so far. I'm not looking for CD quality, just enough compression to stick them all on a 20 gig drive (I can live with 128k sampling)

Ok, This is a slightly off topic but I find it keeps coming up in these posts and I would like to clarify.

The USA holds 5% of the worlds population. 95% of the world are not citizens of the USA.

The assumption that bothers many people I know is that they are labeled with an Anti-Americian title whenever they disagree with what the leaders of the USA have to say right now about gov't, economic, and moral issues. A lot of people in the outside USA world have a democratic form of gov't, and when the USA leaders and some very right wing people from the USA try to enforce issues as above it is seen as a direct insult. How are the people supposed to react when the leader of a small minority of people in the world directly insult them? Roll over and say "Sure thing boss"?

This is a larger problem then is given address. If the USA wants to implement a system of total observation on it own people -fine-, an issue for that 5% of the worlds population to deal with. But when it comes to a technology that contains the information that is not limited to the USA and contains the secure information of people of another soverein nations then it is a larger issue and one of global concern.

It's sort of like the Video Card companies and ID (or whatever the game company is called now) have a symbiote relationship. I mean without a graphically intesive program there is no real need for a graphical processor. Of course everyone will say CG in movies/TV or good CAD, but most used to be done on render specific machines (at a higher cost, but no lost time from solitare and minesweeper). But what happens if Quake/Doom III is a crappy game, or lacks any orginality (1st person shooter being repetitive!!! What are the odds). Then the driving market for the Video Card dries up....

If you need the measurement of a body outside the solar system it is really hard to do a solid measurement. I forget most of my astro 100 course, but I think measurement of extra-solar bodies is done on a star cluster and averaged.

The determination is done using old star positions and observing the slight change to current ones (it has been awhile so someone please correct me if wrong). Anyways, what I do remember is that the errors could be up to 80% by hand, and still fairly high on computer.

Add in error due to the actual mass of Jupiter, and the velocity (not a perfect circle of an orbit).

At this point, 7 months with no related job, I have decided to give up the search and take up teaching English in Japan. After which I plan to finish my Masters off in Canada and become a physics teacher; debt willing.

I don't regret taking physics, I always enjoyed trying to figure out how things worked and physics seemed like the logical choice to me. But I do have advice for people who are taking or planning on taking physics: Focus on a specific field. I took every different type of physics course possible, from thermodynamics to optics to honours quantum. All were interesting (for me at least) but diversity is not really help after graduation. I personally never focused on a releated minor, and bounced from economics, history, and Spanish.

Also it is a good idea to try and work for a professor, or at least give up so free time and help out your department for a solid reference.

Sorry about the topic shift but I hope to guve a bit of information to aspiring physics buffs out there who are really looking for a job after graduation.
