They have to store it without losing any of it. That means redundant storage distributed geographically. The cost of doing this is pretty significant.
The cost for 100 TB of data storage from Newegg is currently $9322. So the cost for 100 backup systems, distributed geographically, would probably be less than a million dollars, after government bulk purchase rates are figured in. When we are giving 7,000 times that amount to the banks, etc., and hoping that they will be able to survive and pay the loans back, I don't think the cost is too much to worry about, when the figure calculated is an obscene amount of redundancy.

I'm not sure - he mentions monogamy as the optimum more than once - but I don't think it would really stand out unless one was already aware of some of the controversy around some of Card's statements on issues.
In Ender In Exile, he actually mentions group marriages in the colonies being ideal for social stability until the population grows large enough to allow monogamous relationships without causing violence to occur over women.
You know, maybe it's because I'm a chemist, and not a gearhead, but those pictures suck, and I would never want one as a destop. Maybe it's because the cars are ugly, or maybe it's because the photographs suck (they DO look like marketing promo photographs, so maybe Toyota has something there), but I will take my wallpaper of a Gen-1 Optimus Prime any day of the week.
No, they're only about 100-150 lbs, max. And the compressor actually isn't much heavier; the casing is usually much bigger than it needs to be. Not that I know this by experience or anything.
What does her wealth have to do with it?
I was not aware that society's subjective judgment of whether someone has made "enough" money from one's intellectual property was a factor in copyright law. . . Rowling's wealth and success are irrelevant.
have been done by hobbyists, i humbly submit this isn't possible anymore. all of the historical advances made by hobbyists were done decades ago, involving simple concepts. all advances today are not simple, but require the support of an advanced facility, simply because all of the fundamental, simple advances in chemistry have already been scoured

similar to hobbyist game makers of just 20, 30 years ago, and how there is no way they could compete on the same footing with modern mainline game studios and the high end graphical renderings they crank out
Competing commercially isn't what we're talking about. Making scientific discoveries is what we're talking about. 100,000 home chemists across the country will find a lot more than the 10,000 that Eli Lily employs, even if they won't be able to crank out 2.5 tons of Prozac each day. And as far as the gaming goes, you're right, CheapAss Games and their ilk, providing products like Unexploded Cow, Munchkin and Ninja Burger, will never compete commercially with Dungeons & Dragons, but does that mean that the products are no fun, and should be discontinued?
and although much equipment required for genetics research (centrifuges, gel electrophoresis, etc.) are still expensive, none of it is outside the realm of the committed hobbyist
Except that the government has placed so many restrictions on scientific supplies that places like Fisher Scientific and Sigma-Aldrich now have a blanket policy, and won't ship ANYTHING to you unless you work for an approved institution.
The problem there is that if you're not home, nobody shoots. What you need to do attach your shotgun to the dog's back, and set up a sound-activated relay on the trigger, so when the dog looks at something and barks, it automatically fires. Now your home is fully protected.
Disclaimer: Teach your dog to not bark excitedly when you come home from work.
Have you tried plugging a TV into the cable feed? A lot of times, the cable company won't bother implementing a cancellation, figuring that reclaiming the box is good enough and saving the cost of a truck roll.
I actually had free cable through this method for most of a year, then I guess they did their annual checks or some such, as it was just gone one day. While I like saving the $45/month, it does depress me a little, to be constantly d/ling torrents of what I used to watch by just turning on the idiot box.
Plus, the real killer is that it takes away bandwidth from my porn acquisition.

. . .the tag "bang news" on a story involving researchers from Virginia Tech?
So they can charge you with Child Pornography too?
Just what I need, to be charged with that yet again.
. . .all of my professors are already demented, then.
It's not like anyone really needs 20 TB of software (or movies), it's our good ol' hunter and gatherer impulse.
Speak for yourself. My 22TB of midget porn rarely keeps me entertained for more than two hours at a time anymore. I just need new material!
I want to see liberals' heads explode when they realize that Socialized medicine is being used to buy people guns.

Oh, god, that's disgusting. Haven't you ever smelled burning jerky before?!

"Look, if he was dying, he wouldn't bother to type 'NO IT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA'. He'd just say it!"
"Perhaps he was dictating."
Come on, this is slashdot. What we need now is the ability to mod tags as "-1: Redundant."

Obviously, you have never voted Democrat.

Vampire movies are always coming out.
Now it still concerns me to stand by and watch just how much more damage the Lame Duck can do before the clean-up crew moves in.
I have this image in my mind of Dubya, on January 19th, starting "police actions" in about 20 countries, and saying, "Let's see him fix this!"

"is in and of itself is bad" ... is that you Sarah Palin?
It can't be, she didn't say "Nookyooler."
. . . How about a reduction? Like in DRM?
Clean tricks?
You know, the ones where the prostitute has had all their shots ...
Good thing I kept my daughter's immunization record!
The car's meant to get you to the spot where the trouble starts.
That just goes to show you how truly messed up today's kids are.
Coca Cola from the USA is significantly different from Coca Cola from Taiwan?
One comes with less styrene.
