i'd say this is more of a "audience" difference, i've already made one comment to it.
crytonomicon is mostly for us... the geeky, computer junkies who understand the technical aspect of things.
ok, now, dan brown's Digital Fortress is for those people who can understand The Da Vinci Code, normal every day people who don't have the technical expertise or desire to understand all the technical things behind it. Maybe even dan brown doesn't understand it himself, maybe he does, i don't know him personally. But the simple crypto examples in the book were just kind of an introduction of sorts to crypto for the average reader. nothing wrong with this, its for a different type of reader.
i still recommend digital fortress, its not heavy on the "technical thinking" aspect, BUT it does have an interesting story and a lot of plot twists that will keep you interested. it flies by, its a very fast book to read, and the reason its so fast is because its entertaining you. it's a good book, short on technical details. but its a good story never the less. give it a try, what's $7-8 for a paperback? if you don't like it, donate it to your local library
oh please, it wasn't that bad. yes, some of it was unbelievable.. but give the guy a break a bit. it entertained you, and you read the whole thing didn't you? i usually throw the books out that i DON'T FINISH.. i mean if you want really indepth cryotography stuff, read Crytonomicon by Neal Stephenson.. there was enough in there to bore me into submission in the beginning, it took me 2 times to even get past that stuff so i could get to the interesting things.. yes, it was a great book with a great ending.. but still, dan brown did a good job keeping things simple for his audience that doesn't understand all these things, where stephenson is obviously going after people like us who do understand it.. it's simply more in the matter of audience than anything else. it was a great read, in fact i read it in 2 days as well, and the ending was disappointing.. but it kept me reading the whole thing and if it can keep my attention like that, then it wasn't a bad book.
ok.. you have your own opinion. I read them and was seriously hooked in how well all the little "theories" were put together to form this very unique story that makes you not want to put it down. Ya, it is theory that could or may not be true. So what? it's a story after all.. be happy people are reading instead of watching tv. i found it entertaining, i also found Cryptonomicon to be very entertaining, along with neuromancer, snowcrash, lord of the rings, harry potter, meg, the trench, and anything else by steve alten. seriously. because you don't like it doesn't mean others don't have to. the unique idea thats in the book regardless of his grammar or vocabulary provide a couple of hours worth of insight that makes you go "huh! that's pretty cool!" more than i can say about reading your response.. seriously lacking anything but bullshit

in that case you can have apt or whatever DOWNLOAD the required packages but NOT install them, thus you can work your way around THAT way instead of wasting bandwidth to grab in incomplete unstable set of cd's...
odd i didn't think you could get unstable on cd, atleast what the point would be. it changes on a daily basis. getting stable is exactly as if getting it from the cd, nothing really changes atleast not without lots of testing to begin with. So basically if you were a server installation the only time you'd need cd's is in case of no net connectivity.
i understand where you're coming from on unstable, but even with those cd's like that there's no guarantee they WORK, i imagine if they have cd images of unstable then they're just kind of daily snapshots.. pointless unless it can be proven that everything works... in which case your argument has not a lot of basis
bah.. you download the first cd and then you use apt to get anything else you might need.. why waste the bandwidth to get ALL of that crap when you only need select items anyway? i carry around a debian 3.0 cd to install it with, then i get the rest from an apt source... gimme a break, you don't need all the cd's to install debian.. get real guys, just shows how little you know about debian and yet you're blabbing your mouth about it.. shut it unless you know what you're talking about. if you have a question thats one thing, but throwing out false info sucks.. go bastardize your own distro
not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but by the time longhorn actually comes out, blogging will be old news... and something else will take it's place..
I want a gameboy advance that uses this to play multiplayer games without cables:) i guess the N-Gage has it, but doesnt work well? i think it would be a cool idea, but who knows... if it doesn't work it doesn't work...
this is true, but at the same time, you still have the P4 that can't run the 64 bit stuff. and is there a G5ized version of linux? how about a non-beta version of linux period for a "DESKTOP" 64-bit processor? in other words, is the version of linux they'll be running actually going to work as well on the 64 bit version as the 32bit one? you might find that it's slower for some stupid reason when compiled for 64bit? these kind of things do happen, not that anyone wants them to or anything.. who knows... i say wait a year for the AthlonFX prices to come down and windows 64-bit edition support goes up, and i bet ya we'll see quite an improvement over 32bit... i'm not in the market for a 64 bit processor right now, the way amd is doing the launch kinda bites... the FX version is a 940 pin socket, while the athlon64 is 734? i think that's it... and with the NEXT FX processor, you'll see a drop to 939 pin socket as they will likely make it so you don't need the registered DDR400 ram as you do with the current FX processor (time constraints, AMD probably didn't want to do this but time didn't allow them to update the processor as they'd like), but AMD claims they will support both the 940 pin socket for atleast through 2004, and then will likely make the break to 939 or whatever else they come up with in that time... basically i don't wanna buy one now due to lack of support, major $$$ factor, and i don't want to buy registered DDR ram... it's too expensive to have the best right now hehe
true, BUT, it's not possible today to really benchmark these CPU's with 64 bit apps, as there are no common apps between the processors... that would also kinda rule out running any 64 bit apps on the AthlonXP and P4 wouldn't it? for now, using the 32bit part of the AthlonFX is about all we'll be doing... until microsoft gets on the ball with the 64 bit edition of windows... until then, we have to settle...
bah... Nintendo has games that would challenge the mind of an adult.. hence the reason i have one... i'm almost 21 and yes.. i play Nintendo games... Eternal Darkness 10/10, Metroid Prime 10/10, hell, even mario golf is fun! just because the games look cartoony don't mean it's for kids...
i honestly don't think it's that bad. we're stealing from the recording companies.. the bands/artists get like pennies from the sales... they get their money from concerts, i prefer to support the artists, so i goto concerts... i don't feel bad for Universal or Sony one single bit... as much as they steal from their artists... they deserve it.
ya, and if you're just in it for the education and all that, most community colleges offer a "community enrichment" program.. you pay SIGNIFICANTLY less to take the classes and you get no credit for it, but, again, you get to take the class;) i'm doing it next summer for autobody repair and painting:) shouldn't cost me more than $1000 for every class there... that's pretty good, when one class would normally cost me close to $800 or so otherwise:)
won't buy or rent any of these. simple as that, they won't make money off me, in the mean time i'll go download the movie so they can lose more money before they come to their senses. did the same thing with TurboTax, then complained about it;)
oh ya, i understand that type of situation. but since my page is just a stupid homepage type deal where i fart around with stuff.. i just say screw the IE people, they're missing out already, so, they won't mind having a fudged up webpage;) but if you're in an environment where you need to be compatible with IE then ya, you're right, no doubt about it. In fact, i compliment you on making sure it works in both browsers, i wish more websites were like that, even though mine doesn't work well with IE, i just prefer to make it easy on myself since i'm not doing it for a job;)
Me as well man, I never even knew Venkman existed, and i've used Mozilla/Phoenix for the past year and a half i think, maybe longer, since 0.92 i think was when i started using it full time. These little debugging tools are REALLY going to be useful.
I just have on my front page, best viewed with Mozilla/Netscape 7... with a nice big link to both. Seriously, IE might load faster, but everyone i've converted over from IE, they don't ever close it once it's open... even my parents, but they use Phoenix now not mozilla (though both are installed)... so, really, for me.. i limit who views my site correctly, but seriously, once aol flips over to use the gecko rendering engine in their client... IE might as well go on to the little browser heaven... or hell..;)
personally i'm a big fan of postgresql... i tried it out because everyone uses mysql and those few who used postgresql always said it was better and they stood by it, which convinced me to try it... i haven't been disappointed by it yet. give it a shot and i believe it supports subselects... what do you have to lose? it's free too.
