Tivo will survive because it has a loyal fan base who love the unit, who can hack the unit to expand it, and now because of netflix.
Look at it this way. How many of slashdot's readers have netflix? I don't but if this were offered i'd get a subscription if it was "unlimited" still. It's really that simple. Your cable company as mentioned does not offer a very wide selection of movies and they're much more expensive. Tivo is going to have one hell of a service if they can provide this.
Tivo will likely remain a niche market device, while people who just kind of like the idea of DVR's and don't want all the fun little nifty things tivo does will pay the $5/mo for the mediocre service their cable/sat company provides them. Tivo's niche market is fairly large so i am pretty sure it'll sustain itself just fine, and once netflix customers start seeing they can get movies on demand from a tivo device you can bet that they'll be interested! This works both ways.
On it's last leg but it continues to try to find new ways to innovate while your cable company and satellite company continue to rip off their ideas? Maybe so but who's coming up with the good ideas and implementing them in such a way that it just works? Tivo created the DVR, you can bet they've got a few ideas up their sleaves yet... i for one will buy a tivo and a netflix account if this hits:)
My problem with directv was that you needed a phoneline to use their boxes, blah on that, tivo let's me use broadband which i don't mind running cat5 to my tv, but why should i run a flipping phoneline to my tv? doesn't make sense. comcast might have a similar option but ya know... i can't even get it in my area yet, or if i can i have to have the bastards bring out another box, who knows how long that'll take, they still haven't come and picked up their crappy cable modem that died on me that has been in it's box for a good year now.
I welcome this kind of service.. now hopefully it's cheaper for netflix to do this over the net than it is to send it in the mail and i don't have to pay $20/mo for this type of service.. which i think is kinda high for my own personal viewing habits.
Let me know if someone else sent you an invite, if not i'll send you one. I'd rather send them to people who haven't gotten one and since you asked i wouldn't doubt if a lot of people ended up sending you invites:-P send an email to unlogikal@gmail.com with name and such and i'll send an invite
From what I remember they are working on allowing you to access it all via POP. It's BETA, what do you expect? You can't expect them to give an account to everyone who wants one, i think a lot of what they're doing is trying to slowly roll it out so they can test scaling and such while they do the testing of the interface and stuff. by slowly rolling it out they get an idea of just how the 1000 megabytes of space grow from user to user and can try to balance things better.
As mentioned already it seems they do it to create a bit of hype. Is the hype all it's cracked up to be? Eh, not really but it DOES work really well and I use gmail over yahoo now for my email, it also makes organizing my mail a hell of a lot easier in terms of mailing lists and such (that's really all i use it for, all my normal mail goes through my websites email addresses).
You just need to calm down and chill, if you want a gmail account ask and i'll gladly give you one of my invitations.
Yes, it does have this option and i have it turned on so it doesn't auto answer on phone open. so technically you COULD use the photo caller id thing, but i don't because i usually just look at the front LCD and that's sufficient for me.
lol i was just joking around man:) i agree with you.. there's no real easy way to test that kind of information and all. i still use it as a good way to start a report or something... i don't take a lot of slashdot articles to heart they tend to be fairly skewed one way or the other
the problem with this approach is that while microsoft has the features disabled you can still get those features by paying more for the server edition. verizon doesn't let you have the features unless you goto another carrier.
i don't use the camera much so i can't really comment on that.. almost wish i had gotten a phone without the camera like the VX4600 but oh well
You can send pictures to the phone to use as backgrounds (i currently use a picture of my girlfriend as the wallpaper on it). Nice little feature but you have to edit the pictures to a certain size. Also lets you do picture caller id, not much use when the phone is closed anyway:-/
You can also send midi files to the phone and set them as ringtones.. you can also set a specific ringtone per contact that calls you.
maybe these are insignificant features to most but coming from a nextel i90 i find it's got some neat features that i wish i could've done with that bulky ass i90. this thing is nearly half the thickness..
battery life is nice too, i get about 5 days of normal usage (maybe 20 minutes or so a day of usage for me) and a bunch of txt msgs... i also talked on the bugger for about 3 hours one night with the girlfriend before i had to plug it in to charge thought that was rather nice
I have a LG VX6000.. while it lacks bluetooth (wish it did have it honestly) it's a great phone. Pretty small and i had one bad unit which was replaced when i went to a verizon store. I think the phone was $80 after rebate when i got it about 3 1/2 months ago
I remember hearing people say bluetooth was dead and it was a giant failure. funny how now bluetooth is something everyone wants:) I wish my verizon phone had bluetooth, I'd love to get a jabra bluetooth headset sure would make talking on the phone easier during my commute to school and such. Ah well, maybe one day a service provider (that isn't crap) would handle a good fully featured bluetooth handset
not quite what i meant. it'll be a long time before linux reaches 50% market share is basically what i was saying.. switching now may or may not do a whole lot of good in the short term... if it works for you great, but i don't see linux on the desktop in mass anytime soon.
man you guys are so critical of things that you don't know how to think sometimes sheesh... instead of just reading it and taking it for face value use your brain and think for a second instead of being force fed any information from slashdot or whatever...
I don't think people switching to linux is really going to stop them. You're going to need to get Linux to over 50% market share before we find any type of interest from Microsoft to maybe stop doing the crap they're doing. It's a big company, they push and shove their way around.. it isn't going to change anytime soon. Slowly but surely the OS community will just have to squash patent after patent... i guess start thinking of it as a way of life.
Then I point you to the PowerMac G5. If Apple can cool it and make it virtually silent then why can't these big named pc manufacturers? Not only do they do it in silence but they do it with a beautiful case too. Granted sure on a PC some things may need to be changed to allow for a bit more expansion but seriously, it can be done, PC manufacturers are just too lazy and want to make things cheap and crappy, it's really that simple.
I think you're about right. We won't see the G5 in a powerbook until IBM can reduce the amount of heat coming from the processor. I don't think we'll see any big advancement in this for awhile yet. We won't see Apple making a fugly powerbook either so that only leaves IBM making a more effecient cooler chip. I'm not sure exactly how much heat it would produce when clocked down either... maybe they will do that? Not sure.
i think the poster was pointing out that we don't typically see this in many mainstream computer manufacturer's designs.. when in fact we should see it. Why should PC's be so loud when apple can design a 2 inch thick computer that's virtually silent? given the amount of room in a typical pc case why should the 2 inch thick imac be so much quieter when compared to a larger pc?
I think that's the point he was trying to make, not that it hasn't really been done before, but it should still be done regardless of how old the idea is. it's a clever design, why not use it?
you sir need to chill and just oh.. i don't know, contribute but not be such an ass in the process? sounds good.. then again you are an AC so i guess your reasoning is pretty well explained.
Agreed. I love iCal but this gives me the ability to view my calendars on my pc too or other people who don't have a mac to view my calendars on their pc's and subscribing to my calendars.. THAT will be useful for me for sure.
I'll say it again... look at the version number guys... 0.2 that's FAR FAR FAR away from 1.0 release. like all typical mozilla products it isn't totally usable until it gets around the.5 to.7 releases.. then from there it becomes much more useful from there on out... give it time, provide constructive criticism and give feedback... bitching on here about it (i know you weren't really but others are) isn't going to help, i bet most of the developers aren't going to read the slashdot comments to look for improvements to their product... email one of the developers or join a mailing list or something and provide some feedback.. what do you like? what do you not like? how can you make it better? what features do you think should be in 1.0? can you help out by providing code? there's a lot you can do if you just put a little bit of time into it.. i personally want this project to succeed because i use iCal on my powerbook and the.cal files from iCal work in sunbird which for me would be great for checking things out on my pc when i need to.:-P give it a try and see if you can't help.
good grief man... look at the version number on that.. 0.2 there's plenty of time for them to innovate, let them get the basics done first then watch as the new useful features roll out... sit back and chill.. if you have such a problem why not go help the development... it's really not THAT hard to write some javascript and such for all that.. i guess if you don't program it might be kind of hard but it's fairly easy to pickup if you tried... the thing i'm trying to say though is to provide your input, if it's not what you want, then why not go suggest features or what have you? bitching isn't going to help, you need to provide constructive criticism and possible advancements...
I second this. I used winamp exclusively and always recommended it. as soon as itunes came out i tried it and wow, what a breath of fresh air. it might not be small and out of the way like winamp (using the windowshade mode) which is the only thing i kind of miss by using winamp. but itunes provides a better interface and just flat out rocks in terms of features for organizing music etc... great stuff
The Chevy Corvette has had Electromagnetic selective ride control for awhile.. not sure how well it works but if the corvette has it i'm sure it's fairly good.. full text from the chevy website..
Magnetic Selective Ride Control
Magnetic Selective Ride Control is a real-time, cockpit-adjustable ride control system that adjusts shock absorber damping by means of electromagnetically charged particles contained within the shock fluid. When exposed to a magnetic charge, the fluid properties change, forming a near solid state. With wheel position sensors at each wheel, the system literally reads and responds to every inch of the road, immediately adjusts the damper force on each wheel and responds to changing road and driving conditions.
Unlike traditional mechanical shock valves, there is practically no limit to the range of soft-to-firm damping capability. And it responds five times faster than previous real-time damping (RTD) systems.
There are two cockpit settings: "Tour" and "Sport," with a switch located on the center console. The "Tour" setting provides more ride comfort and compliance for everyday driving conditions, while the "Sport" setting provides a firmer ride for performance driving and more communication of road feel.
The difference for driver comfort is dramatic. Drivers feel less feedback from swells, dips and contours in the road. Real-time damping systems have existed for years, but they have always relied on traditional, mechanically operated shock valves. The breakthrough MR technology, with precise electronic control, represents the cutting edge of active suspension systems.
correct. Raster used to work for RH and i am pretty sure he worked for VALinux and then quit to move back to australia.
Mandrake (http://www.mandrake.net) however was not associated with Mandrake-Linux (http://www.mandrakelinux.com).
Mandrake went on to found another company, which he then sold and is in the process of working on yet another. BTW, Mandrake's first company was bought by VALinux, it was called Enlightened something I believe... Someone care to correct me? I may have my facts slightly mixed up about raster working for VA still.
If I recall correctly Mandrake (of http://www.mandrake.net fame) worked with rasterman (of http://www.rasterman.com fame) at VALinux (the software area) long ago.. they've all parted ways from VALinux now. But since SF is run by VALinux these guys were some of the first to have access to it and all that. hence the group_id of 2:-P
I believe Rasterman worked for VA... but my brain is a little fuzzy
