Er, Don't get me wrong. I'm posting this from mozilla, while running xmms and gaim. But ask an average consumer what theyve heard about anything you listed -- It makes us look like we're too elitist. While OpenSource projects are some of the best, to thsoe that think 'you get what you pay for' having some more commercial applications would help a lot more than an opensource WMP
It being opensource would hurt Linux badly. If its closed source it can be pointed to as a Real Application(tm) running under Linux and we'd be taken seriously. If it gets opensourced, It will be pointless. We have mplayer for everything, no point in wmp.

I'm not quite sure what you're saying, are you pointing out that your "bland" site could wind up on the blocked list? And thereby also get everyone else on your host blocked?

When they cancled the invisible man, I assumed they were evil. Now I know it:(
Why do all the good (relativly)original shows get cancled so quick? The Invisible Man lasted only 2 seasons, maybe its because they had no tits. Wait, Dark Angel lasted only one, and alba is uNFable as hell. I'm seriously puzzled as to how Buffy can last this long and Dark Angel gets killed on its first season
Disclaimer: I don't want buffy cancled, I'm a huge fan ever since I started watching reruns on FX. It just dosn't make sense that buffy has lasted as long as it has where as other shows that are also good get killed so quick.
(1) A "site" can have ten thousand webpages from hundreds of different people/companies. This is bad for these innocent people/companies that share the "site". (2) This is bad for the people who wish to access the perfectly valid and valuable mentioned above.
If the host refuses to remove the content, then its sort of their choice.
Then again, a look at my analog reports showing most used search querys:
" Unless you're trying to run Mozilla on a freaking Pentium 100 with 64 megs of RAM or something else antiquated like that, performance is fine.
Why shouldnt p100 64mb's be able to browse the web? I don't see whats so intensive about mild webpages. Most webpages are what, 500k at most including all images? How hard is it to render some simple SGML?
For the record, I'm typing this on an amd tbred 1800+ (1.5ghz), underclocked to 1.1ghz since I'm stuck on 64megs of crappy pc100. I can run mozilla with antialiased fonts with two transparent Eterms and a wm with transparent menus -- while running cpuburns read/write memory test -- and still scroll down in mozilla smoothly.
Hrm, I just slashdotted some poor random server from google image search. It was just the cliche picture of a mirror, I figure if slashdot dosnt have to be funny, I shouldnt either.

As a current (relativly) happy TimeWarner RoadRunner user, I'd like to add to this. Currently theyre only blocking the ports that are used by windows file sharing, But most of the people I know with roadrunner have had their port80 blocked. It sucks, but so does the dsl around here.
From what I've read, SpeakEasy looks like the best choice for broadband isps, THey offer static ips, no blocked ports, they let you use the bandwidth they allocate to you, you can share it with anyone in your house, and all that good stuff that makes this one hell of a run on sentance.
I dont know if i could live without my 2mbit downstream though. It makes downloading those isos a breeze.
As for the service hit, I've never had my bandwidth drop during peek usage hours. However, my latency takes a noticable hit. When playing counterstrike in my private server hosted by artofwarcentral.com at 3am, i get about 40-50ms ping. Around the time school gets out, my ping is 50-70. Its not crippling but it is noticable.
Also, Another thing you might want to know before going with cable: You get packeted with Arp Who-has packets (how your isp knows what IPs are allocated) By packeted, i mean i'm getting one every 0.1ms at the latest. Its not a noticable load, But i cant help but its annoying if youre packetsniffing without any filters.
Oh, and one last rant: Roadrunner thinks 'internet access' is HTTP Gets. Youre barely allowed to do anything else
Sadly, those are the people I end up dealing with a lot. The sheepish majority that think FreebSD is cool because their slightly-geeky friend said so, And because they assume that anything thats hard to use/configure must be cool because of pure elitism. Someone needs to teach these sheepkids that not everything should be hard and that working default configurations arnt a bad thing.
(For the record, I prefer clean debian installs on the server, and knoppix hd install as a bootstrap to a working debian install on the home system. I'm not saying the world should be RedHat; I believe any sysadmin worth his privledges should read bash.1 like the bible.)
Most people reported success, there were a few people that bought cards by companys that don't care about customers (ATI), and some people that dont know how to properly debug stuff. Either way, I personally play GTA3 on my PS2 and use my computer for purely productive things(...like counterstrike;))
As FortKnox said, Its monthly. Also, as a Steam beta tester I can tell you there are plenty of drawbacks. If their servers are down or for whatever reason decied you shouldnt be able to play, You loose the game. If you're on dialup, You cant play either. If your connection dies, no game. You see what I'm getting at -- its not all fun and games..erm..atleast not all fun..
And anyone comparing Operating Systems by version number alone obviously would be too stupid to care. Hence the humour. Also, OpenBSD is both a kernel and an Operating System, So why do you assume he was only comparing kernel versions?
As one of those type of cs players, might I recommend not playing on public servers? Just find a good clan and stick to playing against other good clans, maybe join a league. Theres much funner ways to play cs.
Already happened. NVIDIA is sponsoring Team3d, a clan that won last years Cyberathletes Professionals League (think big lan party with huge prizes running a game ladder). see team3d.net for more info
