Good point. I was scrolling through the comments looking for this to be brought up because I think its a very important starting point. Essentially, if you are using the earbuds that came with your phone or mp3 player, or something like Beats, you're likely not going to experience a difference between any of the formats. If you want to do ABX testing to find out if you can tell a difference you're going to need to use equipment that can actually reveal those differences. Those people who use stock earbuds or cheap (though not in price) celebrity endorsed headphones plugged directly into mobile devices and laptops etc. have no need for lossless files. However, if you are using a high quality DAC and proper headphones (High-end Sennheisers, Beyerdynamics, orthodynamics like Hifiman's or Audeze, electrostatics like Stax etc) you're more likely to be concerned with using the best quality music you can find and more likely to notice those differences. I've done ABX tests between 24/96 and 320k mp3 and have been able to consistently spot the difference although not 100% of the time.
This reminded me of something that has been puzzling me for weeks now since installing Windows 7... No matter how many times I click on iTunes from Start > All Programs it WILL NOT show up in the Start menu's main list of most commonly used programs. Its a constant reminder of M$'s evil ways as it takes several clicks to open iTunes...
Oh my God people! I have definitely not laughed harder than this all year. From the article:
> The paper says a "monumental shift" could occur if robots
> develop to the point where they can reproduce, improve
> themselves or develop artificial intelligence.
> The research suggests that at some point in the next 20 to 50
> years robots could be granted rights.
> If this happened, the report says, the robots would have certain
> responsibilities such as voting, the obligation to pay taxes,
> and perhaps serving compulsory military service.
Do I really have to explain how silly this is?! These people are making the assumption that if someone builds a robot that can do fancy human-like things that governments are obliged to respect the robot as a human. It would take a VERY idiotic government to make this happen. And doing so would be a humongous mistake in the way of human rights. OBVIOUSLY! What are you going to give "human" rights to next?! HA!
Come on people. This is completely ridiculous. Would you give a computer personal rights? Wake up, people. Human rights require a human. These kind of stories are complete gibberish, made up by science fiction lovers who cannot give up on the idea of robots taking over the world. Sorry, but only in your MMORPG games is this possible. Robots are like computers, they cannot do anything but what you tell them to do. This completely abolishes the idea of a robot (or a computer) having personal rights. Come on, there are much more important things to research and discuss in our world today.
Having said that, I understand the value of a/philosophical/ discussion into whether or not robots should be given rights. However, seriously considering the idea that "Robots Could Some Day Demand Legal Rights" is ridiculous. Does no one else realize the reality that the only way a robot could "demand" legal rights is if its designer built into it the ability to "demand" these rights. So, if I make a robot that demands you give him your wallet you'll have to give it up? Hardly. Come on you dorks.:D
Let your users send and receive.doc's and therefore get their jobs done. Explain to them (maybe through a corporate memo?) the risks with.doc files and not to open any.doc files that they don't know for certain are from reliable sources. Eh?
I for one make my company's employees and their ability to get their jobs done quickly and effectively my first priority. Forget about the exploits. Don't let M$'s insecure software make your workers less effective!!
IMO blocking.doc's altogether while you wait for your malware filter to be able to catch the exploit is obviously overkill.
Dean, you remind me of a saying: liars think that everyone lies. In life you can be a liar or you can portray truth and light, but not both. You can be a leach and a follower or you can be a creator and a leader, but not both. Do I need to point out where you fit in? You are worthless.
You're right. He is a liar. And a loser. The worst part: a recent update to the story that he posted as his latest entry. From that post:
> I would like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart
> for your support on this. I have been trying not to take
> any of it too seriously, and your comments have really
> helped me.
No, Dean, let us thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You are scum and all the traffic in the world will never give you or your web site any purpose. Keep grasping at those straws loser, as well as leaching off of other's work and their humble naivety. Again, it will never give your worthless existence any meaning, only magnify the look you've given us all into your phonyness.
I want to listen to this speech here at work. My boss will get mad if I spend the time to read through it so I need to have it in audio form so I can listen while I work. Anyone know if theres an ogg or mp3 version of this out there?
This whole idea of total cost of ownership is completely useless. Its contextual. I can run a web server on Linux much easier, faster and therefore cheaper than on Windows. Furthermore, I dare say I can run a web server more efficiently and cheaper than most Windows web admins:P . However, had I grown up running Windows web servers this would be backwards, with Windows being the cheaper option when being administered by myself. Do you see the circumstantial aspect of this? TCO is FUD and its bullshit and no one from inside the issue will ever lend it any credibility.
Google could offer to host utube.com and place on it a cute little page that asks "Which site are you looking for?" and links to both Universal Tube and YouTube. That way Universal Tube doesn't keep getting more traffic than its system is designed for. Of course, this would require that Google offer to host the domain landing page and that Universal Tube allow its domain to be taken over. Sounds like Universal Tube may not be the type of people that would consider this kind of compromise adequate. Oh well.
I don't know about the en-GB or win32 versions but the en-US Linux version on this mirror is actually just the latest release candidate. I downloaded and installed but the build date of this version is 20061010, identical to the release candidate i was using before.
which brings up the question, did microsoft make him pay for an "authentic" key? if so, i find this troublesome. why should/he/ have to pay for someone else's actions? he was dupped into paying for it, if microsoft wants the money they should go to the company that sold it to him.
This is what I'm wondering. Does this mean you can run 32-bit video plugins in Firefox on a 64-bit system?! If so, I can't wait for the next rel. of Ubuntu! W00T:)
Paranoia is not exactly the solution. In the REAL world your chances of logging onto a public computer at school that has compromised is very very slim. Talk to the IT department at your school. Ask/them/ if they think its a security risk to use their public machines on a daily basis. If they aren't confident with their system, look into getting your own machine. And if you're going into computer science, look into attending a different school.;)
symantec is buying out anyone who begins to compete with them, limiting user choice to a single application suite that is both badly engineered and insecure. sounds like a perfect match for Windows.
Personally I'm very interested in seeing the latest total downloads number. Why not?!?! Come on... this guy's got more time on his hands than he knows what to do with. Can you say 'over-analyzation'? (dont know if thats a word...) o.O
Come now, sillies! Just burn your iTunes tracks, delete them, and import them back into iTunes as mp3s. Its worth the CD-R to guaruntee you'll have playable music well into the future. This is Slashdot! You're supposed to be geeks; hackers! This should be a mute point.;)
"Sounds like some people can get Linux to work in an 'enterprise environment' after all."
paleeeeease. linux has been being used in the enterprise for years though the practice may not be mainstream. i don't think there's any question that linux can be deployed in an enterprise environment. i can build you any system you'd like, with linux, and it will be stable and secure. you just need to work with the right engineers--ones that really KNOW technology rather than just follow it (microsofties, shall we call them?).
This is the dumbest thing I've heard in a long time. And I'm afraid its completely useless to try to explain this to people that agree with Hilary Clinton. You are the same people that think Eminem was sent here by the devil. This is nothing more than censorship and its downright blasphemous. (spelling?) You can try to stop under-agers from buying the game but the moment you tell the game developers to stop developing the game you are not longer a democratic, free nation. Shame on Hilary Clinton and all of her sympathisers in regard to this.

Can't find the link to the download in the Phoronix review or anywhere on ATI's web site. Anyone have it ?

$14.99 hard copy, $12.99 digital copy.. sounds just right to me.
