don't make out like everything's rosy now saddam's gone, cos for most Iraqis times are much worse now than they were at any time under Hussein)
I didn't say everything is rosy now, but it sure as hell is better now than it was under Saddam. You obviously are speaking from the perspective of the liberal, filtered, US media machine. There is far more good going on there than you have a grasp on. Do a little homework and learn something that isn't on the 10 'oclock news.
Then there is the 964 owners who say the 993 isn't a true 911 because Porsche got help from the Japanese to reign in costs and thus produced a lower quality car (the 993 actually sold for $5000 less that the previous year's 964). They also point to the swept back fenders and headlights as more proof
The 933 is the last "true" 911 and IMO is the best one. It is the result of three decades of refinement. It's the 996 that is the "japanese porsche". The Japanese were consulted to redesign the engine case in the 996 to make it cheaper to manufacturer (the 993 and 964 engine cases were an expensive piece to make). They've been having problems with this "japanese" engine case. If you want a new Porsche - get a 996 turbo. The new turbo still uses the "old" engine case and is 100% Porsche - no Japanese consulting involved.
I'm pretty sure there are even a few 356 owners who think anything else isn't really a Porsche.
Actually, when the 911 first came out in the early '60's, there were people that thought it was too different and too radical and they didn't like it. The 911 was the first street car (not counting the exotic 550 spyder) that was 100% Porsche designed. The 356 relied heavily on the Volkswagen parts bin and the beetle design. But the 356 is a sweet ride;-)
The saddest part of 911 snobbery is that it killed the BEST Porsche (and best GT) EVER, the 928.
Too bad parts for the 928 cost twice what they do on a 911, and it takes 3x the labor hours to replace them. From a parts and maintenance perspective, the 928 is a failure. It costs more to maintain that it does to buy another one.
Show your love of music and support independant artists!
There are web sites like CDBaby.com which sell all independant music and charge very low prices! Tired of filling the pockets of the RIAA? Me too.
Disclaimer: I'm in no way affiliated with cdbaby.com. I'm just a very satisfied customer and a fan of some of the independant artists who's CD's they sell.
it has it's own BSD style kernel which does more sophisticated (fair) scheduling and memory management (on-demand page sharing between VMs). People think it's linux based because it has the GNU toolchain ported to it (ie, they're morons).
Yes, it does. ESX server is based on RedHat 7.2. It's a Linux kernel that boots when you power on the machine. Only at the end of the bootup process, the Linux kernel is swapped out into it's own single CPU VM, and the VMware kernel is swapped in and controls the remaining CPU's and the individual VM's.
Microsoft is not building the school, they are only contributing the associated technology and services. With spending cuts hitting schools hard, Linux looks more tasty each passing day. This cunning move by microsoft assures them that this school will pump out thousands of students per year who are brainwashed to believe that computers = microsoft.
Linux? eh? Mac? What's that? It runs inside of WindowsXP right? Behold, the next generation of systems administrators, purchasing directors, and CTO's.
I've used two other IDE mirroring controllers with great success although they are not in the
1. Arco IDE's DupliDisk2 product www.arcoide.com is a hardware based mirroring solution that is attached to your existing IDE controller. It requires no drivers and is platform independant. Great solid product I've been using for years.
2. 3ware Escalade 8500 SATA is what I'm currently using. It's something like $300 or $400, but it is also a hardware RAID solution and it supports hardware RAID 5, has excellent Linux driver support, and can support up to 12 drives on a single card. A very nice solution - as an added bonus, it is a 64 bit card.
That's all I've used, but again I highly recommend either of these two.
I'm hoping someone will invent one of those pocket sized USB flash memory "hard drives" that looks like a dildo. That would really piss off the librarian.;-)
I was hoping for more than twenty frames per second in DooM and Wolfenstein 3D. Also porn thats 3D, lifelike, and interactive!
Oh well, one out of two aint bad.;-)
Now I consider myself a serious geek, and I seldom ask "Why?", but in this case (pun intended) I think this is truly a purposeless and possibly dangerous mod.
Hopefully one day they can come up with a medical preventative measure for obesity. "Self restraint" certainly doesn't seem to be working as there are TONS of fat people everywhere (At least in the US). Put the damn potato chips down!
It really pisses me off when I see some 350 lb woman ordering three big mac's and two XL fries. The ever-increasing cost of private health care is very likely due in part to treating all the diseases and conditions that result from being grossly over-weight.
Is this $48 billion cash reserve some kind of an accountant figure, or is there a numbered bank account sitting there with $48 billion which can be drawn on?
This is cash in the bank. Real US currency in an account.
"Oracle will move its base development platform to Linux, including putting the open-source operating system on the workstations of 8,000 developers"
Maybe this will answer the question "Is Linux ready for the desktop?" for other major corporations. Yes, a developer workstation is a "desktop" if it's their main business machine.
A heavyweight desktop-linux push is what is going to get businesses off the proprietary MS office file formats. When people realize that they are tied to.DOC.XLS and.PPT - and not tied to Windows per se, this is what will cause the widespread adoption of a truely open business document file format.
Yeah... you know another way to generate buzz about their product(s)? Release 95% of it under an OSI approved license.
I'm really tired of all this slashdot FUD. Stop prejudging their actions by their past.
95% ? I don't think so. Releasing an OSS media player with no codecs like getting a car with no engine. Sure, I guess it's better than nothing, but it isn't terribly useful for anything either.

Nor would we have gone to war in Iraq [google.com]. It's a dark time for the little guy. :(
Yeah. sure. The author of this comment has a clue (sarcastic look on my face).
Liberating millions of ultra oppressed people is an evil deed and has brought on dark times for little guys.
Puh-leeze.
OUT: Windows NT servers IN: Windows 2000, Server 2003 WHY: Support will disappear soon--as will all those security patches and updates.
I'll believe it when I see it. So far, Win2k and 2003 are just as bad as NT so far as frequency of OS patches is concerned.
Minimal sys admin? I'd say OpenBSD. Either that or QNX. Yeah... that's what 6th graders want.
* The G5 processor runs really hot * Notebooks don't like heat * It'll be tough to get the G5 in a PowerBook
If DEC could get an Alpha chip into a laptop in 1996 (i think) then surely Apple can get a G5 into one.
Those alphabooks were HOT though. I thought about sewing potholders into my khakis so my thighs would stop getting burnt.

"Fear not young lovers, I am Fire Marshall Bill Burns and I notice your cell phone is getting a little warm south of the antenna there, son."
Anyone else here remember Jim Carey at the height of his career?
Don't you mean codec du jour? I assume you meant to use the french term for "of the day".
In Soviet Russia, Opterons cluster YOU!
"Go price out an eight-way Dell 8450 server. Then tell me about low-end."
Go and price a nice sun fire, or a nice IBM regatta and get back to us kid. Yes those Dells are low end in the realm of servers....
Or how about an Alpha Wildfire GS160 or GS320. Or the Tandem/Compaq/HP "Himalaya" systems which run the NYSE.
If you want one of these, you better have a seven digit bank account balance.
Makes those 8-way Dell's look like tinkertoys.

Too bad he has to get a real job now to pay his bandwidth bill after being linked to by slashdot.

Unfortunately that much money's a drop in the bucket for microsoft
Actually, half a billion isn't a "drop in the bucket" even for M$. M$ has quarterly revenues of roughly US$12 Billion.
That's 4 percent of their quarterly revenue which is not an insignificant number for the corporate accounting types.
But then again, M$ does have ~US$48 Billion in cash reserves. So I guess it is just a drop.
