The only microsoft product I own is WinXP and that's because HalfLife / Team Fortress / CounterStrike doesn't work as well as I had hoped when I tried it under Linux.
Sure, under wine it works around 90% of the time. It's that 10% that fry's me when I'm ready to snipe the enemy:-)
Nothing worse than lagging at the wrong time::grinz::
"Red Hat promised that its CMS solution could get a company up to speed with content management in as little as two months."
As much as I respect RedHat I can't see how anyone would be willing to wai that long for a CMS solution. I've been using phpNUKE for months and it took less than a few days to setup. It's not a perfect CMS system but it affords me the ability to manage my documents easily.
I'm sure their CMS will be good. I'm interested in checking it out thought I doubt we would be inclined to replace phpNUKE anytime soon. It has too many festures including the ability to manage blocks/modules, easily add modules/services, takes polls and so on.
Yes it sounds like a Portal. That's what they basically do however it's capable of much more!
It would seem the shoe is on the other foot now. Using the DMCA in this manner could actually help this guy from getting burned for life. Very interesting the discussion about section C2 of the DMCA. He received no financial benefit and technically he can't really control who pulls from his system any files.
To police that really would be impossible. Unless you don't sleep:-)
"What's really frightening is that with maroons like you running around saying things like that, you make it easy for people to get used to the idea of our freedom diminishing."
Is that the best you can do? Innuendo?
I've already mentioned in other posts what I've been seeing and many other's have echo'd those concerns. Democrats or Republicans. My father always said that every election year we try to elect the guy who isn't as big of a crook. I'm starting to agree.
Provide more substance and less fizz in your next update. Thx
Very true. My concern comes from what we're seeing with some of the goofy laws we're creating. Laws which haven't been repealed (and they should be). DMCA, Patriot Act and so on. Very slowly like a frog in water we're seeing the temperature rise. If it continues then we like the frog will not be distinguised from other countries.
50 years ago our Grantparents would be appalled at what we have become. You mentioned we are allowed to discuss it and for today that is true. Then of course we have other's who are telling us to "shut up" and let the Government do what it wants.
"Heather MacDonald, a lawyer at the Manhattan Institute. She says we should shut up and let the government do what it wants. Our government only wants to protect us, and would never misuse technology."
I've been reading the Federalist papers for some time now. Many of our cherished rights steam from the writings found there. We are warned about Government intrusion and what our God given rights are. Basically telling us to "shut up" and allow the Government to take apart what makes us America is plain stupid. After they are done then what will distinguish us from any other country controlling it's citizens (Iraq for example).
It is important that we protect ourselves from being controlled. I'm not talking Anarchy. I'm talking about a small group of people abusing the general citizens. That's what the founding fathers were trying to build. A Government for the people.
Are we willing to give up all that has made America great? I don't see people falling over themselves immigrating to Mexico, Russia or China. They are coming to America.
We may not be perfect but we're better off with our rights intact. I for one am against this foolish experiment. It will only damage us and our children's future.
Ok. I give up. Just when will Microsoft say it and mean it? Not to start another holy war but think about it. Haven't we been hearing this from Microsoft for the last 15 years or so already?
Maybe someday it will come true. Not holding my breath however. At least I have my Linux OS to hug:-)
Voting to kick the offending player is a great feature. I wish they would add it to Team Fortress Classic. Sure there are mods that allow it however not many servers run them.
Counterstrike on the other hand does have the vote/kick feature thank goodness. Both great games which I've been playing for years. Gets tiresome though when a cheat0r decides to grace us with his/her presence.
One benefit from playing against cheat0rs. You learn to get back up and adapt. I've become a tougher gamer as a result. So now I have people calling me cheat0r as a result. Unreal:-)
BTW, the article mentioned Tony Ray the creator of PUNKBUSTER! A great tool we betatested way back when he was still playing HL/TFC and Counterstrike. I'm pleased to see the product has taken off and is available for SOF II (another game I'm looking at purchasing).
Why would you blame the manufacturer of the CD Player for a device that follows industry specs? Wouldn't you blame the manufacturer of the defective CD and sue them?
Sure it sounds unrealistic. Still if it was ANYTHING other than the music industry then wouldn't you sue the guy who broke your product and not the manufacturer who did the job right?
" Im conufsed it sounds like your saying that it is only a threat?"
My point was that the DMCA has been mainly used as a threat over the last few years especially this last year. Look at what HP did for example? All they did was threaten with a DMCA lawsuit and the company they were attacking stopped what they were doing (forget the details but it was a slashdot story a few months ago).
It's simply too broad and doesn't protect what the founders "claimed" it would.
Well.. hopefully this will actually be a catalyst in dismanteling the DMCA. The threats of using the DMCA against honest people in creative projects has been abusive especially this last year.
You of course missed my point and suggested I stated it proves the sun is responsible for global warming (weak innuendo perhaps?)
As stated in the article, we don't have 100 years of information to go back on however they did mention other times in earths history such as the mini iceage which temperatures were lowered and is believed related to the sun's output reduced.
btw, " Willson said the Sun's possible influence has been largely ignored because it is so difficult to quantify over long periods."
so... as I stated in my previous post.. what caused the mini ice age in the 13th century? Humans? Sun? Liberls?::grinz:: Ok... you get the point.
Oh and btw, this is an opinion of someone who has been closly watching this for years. Not suggesting you are ignorant however your slam suggests a lack of... something:-)
"The US government ALREADY doesn't take global warming seriously. Bush was pretty quick on the draw to withdraw from the Kyoto protocol when he entered office. I guess Kyoto and pumpin oil don't mix."
Neither do voodoo science and reality.
Get real. After reading this article on the sun getting hotter people still insist humans are responsible for global warming. So what was the reason for global freezing in the 13th century? Lack of burning oil?
Personally while I despair that we're at war, I realize it's about damn time someone did something about it.
While the U.S. can't solve the worlds problems on it's own, there are times where stuff like this is required and we're more than willing to get involved.
This morning I was listening to KSL radio (www.ksl.com). They interviewed a lady who immigrated from Iraq with her family. Quite enlightening. She has the same opinion. War sucks but consiering it's So Damn Insane at the helm she's glad we're going in after him. She and all her family/friends never had enough to eat. She speaks about times where they had to dig with their hands to find water. The crap people were taking from the Dictator Government.
It goes on. Hopefully they still have it on their web sit (most article on the radio are put on the web site). Her story was agonizing to hear. It makes me wonder why the hell Clinton (don't start::grinz::) didn't do something. Guess he was more interested in rating for re-election rather than doing the right thing (yeah I know... I know.. Clinton.. what a joke::grinz::)
Sorry to get all political on you guys but it's my heart felt believe that we're going to war not for oil. We're there because things got that bad.
3 years for file sharing? And all we're doing is helping out the economy. After all... when Napster died the Recording Industry started to notice problems with sales.
File sharing is my greatest tool. I've used it to learn which songs are ACTUALLY worth listening to and have purchased cd's as a result.
What a bunch of idiots. Guess I'll just loose interest and STOP purchasing cd's again. That'll improve their sales.
"Any transmission there and back will have a 6k year life span. That's far to great of a distance for us to explore yet, and far to much of a time to comprehend between signals. So how will we deal with another society 17,597,088,000,000,000 miles away?"
Personally I don't think distance really is an issue for an advanced space faring species. Should there be one or more out there then distance isn't going to annoy them as much as us.
Look at what we've accomplished over the last 100 years. From a mighty 5 MPH vehicle to over MACH 18. Tomorrow we might discover WARP or something even faster (sure it's a Star Treck term... but it works).
Perhaps if we weren't always at each other's throats all the time we would be exploring other planets personally ourselves. Again I say why not? 40 years ago people laughed at today's common cell phone which fits in my shirt pocket:-)
Over and over I hear it's not just the cost of software but the overall support that costs more when supporting a Linux system. Rubbish I tell them. I've had to support nearly 100 of these systems and it's not that difficult. They just run and keep running. How much support besides the occasional upgrade/path do you really need?
I'm still waiting for the Government to create the "Ministry of Peace" and NightWatch.
;-)
Yes... I've watched too many Babylon 5 Episodes
You're right. Windows XP must be another companies product.
My mistake.
The only microsoft product I own is WinXP and that's because HalfLife / Team Fortress / CounterStrike doesn't work as well as I had hoped when I tried it under Linux.

Rumor has it they are considering 8 track tapes.
"Just for accuracy, the lyric is "Oh, say does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave / Over the land of the free, and the home of the brave?""

ROFL!
I knew as soon as I hit submit this was going to come back at me

Hey wait! Have a sense of humor will yah
Unfortunaltey it's a spreading disease. If it can happen here why couldn't it happen somewhere else?
:-)
America is supposed to be the Home of the Free and Land of the Brave. At least it was until the last few years.
Makes you wonder why we are allowing our politicians to destroy what so many have worked to build.
Don't worry... some politician is probably reading this and getting ready to mod me down

I'll bet they will use this as some sort of cosmic endorsement of their product. At least a new ad campaign.
Stranger things have happened.

Fortunately it shows just how much class SUSE has.
I've used their products for years. While I mainly use RedHat, I've been impressed and couldn't imagine them not responding to something this stupid.
Perhaps the other's in United Linux will consider their position with SCO and follow suit.
