Patching Windows is *GOOD* (as in doubleplus) for the economy!

Just think of all the computer techs "steppin & fetchin" right now patching up all the M$ boxes around the world. Right now they are busier than Santa's elves on Christmas eve.

All that overtime is boosting the enconomy man!
And as they drive around, they spread the wealth, from spending those big, fat paychecks on upgrading to Windows XP! And as they drive around patching systems, the stop and spend a dollar or two at McD's, a bag of Cheetos, a soda, you name it.

Yep, patching Windows definatly is a BIG BOOST to the economy and it's a good Homeland Defense exercise.

I talked to my son at college last night and the entire dorm is dead stopped because there are 150 pc's (excluding his Linux box) that are virused 6 ways to sunday and have brought the school system to a halt. He can't use the internet because of the MS machines bringing it down.

Now THAT's sad. With 150 machines in his dorm it's turned into a virus P2P network. The viruses propogate so rapidly because they are protect by the univeristy firewall from the outside world but there is no internal protection against *anything*....

The people that run networks, like schools and businesses need to manage their systems better. This stuff is not funny anymore and it's already gone was past the prank stage.

On very rare occasions I buy a DVD of a movie I really like but I only buy OLD movies, as they convert them to DVD from film. (I like movies that are older than 50 years for the most part)

The only hang up to that would be is if there are sonic or IR detectors to detect the physical presense of a human being which would then cause the RFID detectors to scan you.

  24. Here's what I do, on Linux vs. Windows: Choice vs. Usability · · Score: 1

when I install Linux for someone I don't even tell them there is a choice of gui's.

I install all the gui's for them but I set them up to run under KDE. It's what I use, it's what I like, I know it, I can support it over the phone, standing in a field with no access to a PC, strictly from memory.

I don't want to confuse them with all the possibilities at the begining. Someone just being introduced to Linux usually doesn't even understand how there can be different gui's.
And it's insane to turn them loose at the very begining with all of them. Just say nothing and get them started with the one that *YOU* can support them in. Unless you intend to install Linux for them then abandon them.

Why confuse a new convert? I don't like the idea of forcing it all down to NO options but the way I do it is to get them started with what I know so I can support them in the best way.

By the time they learn enough to begin asking about other gui's I tell them to try them out but I warn them that they do so at their own risk and without my support.

Don't FORCE everyone in having no choice as in M$ but don't overload new converts with too many choices right off the bat. Get them started on one gui then as they progress let them explore the others if they so desire. If they never ask about the other options or try them out then they aren't capable so you needn't worry..
