And what is going to stop spyware writers from writing mozilla extensions? Right now it is market share but thats quickly increasing, its only a matter of time.
Apple has the same feature, you can change the icon of an application to mp3 file icon and add a.mp3 extension. Oh wait, this is slashdot, so double standards are allowed.
Btw attachments in outlook or any other email program(that I know of) never cut off the extension. And outlook has stopped recieving.exe,.bat,.scr.,.vbs or any other executable attachment since 2002. Nice try though.
If your running asp.net under win2k it runs as an ISAPI process. With server2003 its runs natively in IIS, makes it a little bit more robust. Also like the security settings, especially being able to control TCP/IP down to the port level. Not sure if this also on win2k, if it is, it must be buried.
Bad drivers are cause of lot of problems. I know with the old version of the ATI drivers would blue screen my win2k workstation box on a weekly basis. Called up ATI and they told me they didnt' support win2k workstation, ended up buying an nvidia card and my problem was solved. I won't even talk about XP and my soundblaster card, i don't know how much hair i tore out of my head dealing with that crap.
Now with our server, I still haven't seen a blue screen almost two years now. Of course they are all Dell servers. And not like my homebuilt workstations.
Pretty good, I guess. But my feeling is, if you're going to sell cigars in the gift shop, you should be able to smoke them, too. I bought a pretty pricey smoke and wanted to enjoy it as I strolled along the Avenue of the Stars, and I was told in no uncertain terms that smoking was not permitted. When I asked why cigars are sold in the gift shop, I was told that these cigars aren't "the smoking kind." Am I missing something? P.S.: The Sharon Stone robot figure in the Hollywood Atrium is busted.
Doesn't show President Bush's Website, Michael Moore Website or Jimmy Carters Website. Come on now, what type of search engine doesn't allow you to spam the results.

There's now way free software(no adware) can compete against marketing money of spyware bundled software. Especially when an affliate program is setup, you'll get every black hat SEO spamming the search engine results. Not to mention all the fake review sites.
Its not £680 for the server version of an IIS server. Try £170 for Windows Server 2003 web edition.

When you work with WinCE, you get the source code from microsoft to customize to your product. I don't know of any precompiled solutions in the embedded OS market.
Its not getting a slashdotting. He's running win2K workstation instead of server and is only allowed 5 connections on IIS. Thats why IIS error message is very responsive and says forbidden and not a Server 500 error.
No all registars do that, you have a safety period of about a month. There's still a big rush to grab the domain after this period. Especially since search engines are now giving higher weight to websites that have been around for a while. I guarantee if you have PR 6 or higher and you let your domain expire, there will be every damn search engine spammer and their mom trying to get your domain.
If I have a class c address I can get 255 clicks. If I make a web page about mesothelioma, those clicks are worth up to $165 per click which I'll probably see $10 to $20 of that money. Thats a lot of cash. After I burn the first class C, I'll just get another class C. Now If i have a 100 Zombie PCs sitting on internet connections with DHCP, I can get 100 click over however long their DHCP IP lease is. Personally, I don't like google adwords. It works great googles website, put allowing people to put it on their website makes very open to fraud. I know experimenting with overture ads, I recieved 0 conversions with ads on people's websites but around 10 to 20% conversion on if its displayed on the actual search results.
I bet they would have researched the idea for 2 years using their own money if there wasn't patent protection. Spending a few million dollars, so a competitor can reverse engineer it. BTW patents only last 15 years.
...that the vast majority of this spyware was installed by exploiting vulnerabilities (some overt, some more roundabout) in primarily Internet Explorer.
Really? Prove it. Find a website that installs spyware using an IE exploit. I haven't seen one.
You know what I consider is spyware also. Third party cookies set by banners. That way advertisers can track you across multiple sites. See where you shop, see what you view. So why is that IE blocks 3rd party cookies by default and firefox doesn't? You did remember do turn off 3rd party cookies? Those banners are spying on you and it didn't even require any software to be installed.
Disinformation by fanboys on slashdot is so amusing. By the way outlook stop recieving scripts attachments since 2002, you're 3 years behind the times. And btw, you can't access outlook address book with a script since outlook 2002. And if we are going to talk about servers, lets talk about windows server 2003. I like to see you remote a exploit a default installation of it. A since you are on the subject of market share, I can remember when apple had a decent market share. And I can remember having my mac plus(nvir),mac se/30(wdef), and even my mac 7200ppc infected by viruses. Hell one even came on the fricking the macworld CD. Those were the days, now apple's market share has dwindled, so have the virii. Haven't seen one since System 8.5, but thats what about time I picked up my first PC like many of my other fellow mac users. God I miss those days,my Hermes BBS and trolling on the PC bbs systems.
Here's a little bit of trivia, what was the first mac software to have malware/backdoor? Homer IRC client that came out back in 96.

New SSH Exploit (detailed here) affects Mac OS X granting the attacker access to the computer as root. This security issue is vulnerable in OpenSSH version prior to 3.7, and Mac OS X is currently only at OpenSSH 3.4. To protect yourself from being vulnerable to this security risk disable SSH access to your computer by accessing your Sharing Control Pane and make sure that Remote Login is disable. Or setup your firewall to restrict access to the SSH port to only allow trusted connections. We will update this issue when Apple releases a security update.
Directory Services - Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server contains a security hole in DirectoryServices which allows for escalation of privledges and denial of service attack which is fixed with the 10.2.5 update. DirectoryServices is part of the operating systems information services subsystem, and is launched at being setuid as root by default. Credit for this find goes to Dave G. as noted by Apple's security advisory
New computers(Dell, etc) come with SP2 already installed. If your building your own computer and buying the OS at the same time, make sure you grab the windows box that say SP2 otherwise you can order an SP2 disk from microsoft if you have an older copy.
