China Launches New Search Engine
stupidfoo writes "With all those nasty pro-democracy websites that Google keeps turning up, what's a communist country supposed to do? Well, create their own search engine of course! According to the AP, 'Bill Clinton on Monday helped launch a new Internet search company backed by the Chinese government which says its technology uses artificial intelligence to produce better results than Google Inc.' Accoona Corp. was one of the Chinese companies that donated an 'undisclosed amount' to the recently opened Clinton Library. Using the search engine from inside the US doesn't show any noticeable amount of censorship, but it also doesn't show how it's anywhere near the level of Google."

How much of the difference in quality results has to do with the fact that Google has a huge head start in indexing the web? Maybe Acoona's results will improve over time?

This is obviously part of China's oppressive "great firewall of China". Its disappointing to see Clinton involved in something like this. While I know he made it a point in his administration to maintain good relations with China, this kind of encouragement of their censorship activities shouldn't happen.
Damn - why's he gotta keep smearing my old '90s rose-coloured-glasses?
Using the search engine from inside the US doesn't show any noticeable amount of censorship, but it also doesn't show how it's anywhere near the level of Google."
That's an easy answer. You're just searching for the wrong things that's all. Try searching for things that matter like counter-strike cafes and dog meat recipes.
This isn't too surprising. Bill Clinton sold China our multi-stage missile technology for satellite launching. China is using this to build ICBMs to target the western United States. (And have since threatened to hit Los Angeles with a nuclear warhead if we ever interfere in regards to our ally Taiwan.) This was after he received numerous under the table donations for his campaign from the Chinese government and financiers. After he sold out our national security to the Chinese for some campaign donations, giving the Chinese a national search engine is no big deal.
Hrmm, doesn't look like a particularly good search engine to me. I searched on it for "Linux" just to see what it would churn up and the first hit was a link to microsoft.com. All the search results appear to be "Sponsored Links"...

That's one of those things you go "gee what a loon" and go on. I would hardly consider it news - it's just gossip. It has no bearing on anyone's life save the few parties directly involved and possibly a jury of her peers. The fact this would be considered "news" (much less "compelling") is, I think, a great illustration of how we as a nation could have been so stupid to re-elect a liar as a president.. or even to have believed him in the first place.

Maybe there is something to this.
A search for tiananmen square on Accoona reveals mostly "Travel China" sites, although it does show the National Association for Democracy page as the 11th hit.
A search for tiananmen square on Google finds sites like "student protests", "history declassified" and the wikipedia page.
Hmmm, maybe there is something to this conspiracy theory.
Whats up with condemning it just because its from China (instead of just pointing out its crappy quality)? Oh yes, I forgot, this is Slashdot, the epitome of American geekhood, all things communist must be evil. Yes, that's right, mod me down - that wont be censorship, that'll be just democracy.
I have been throwing some very general queries of things I am interested in. Google returns results with information, acoona search tends to return results for where you can buy something.
We already have those search engines, they are prolific and generally suck.
I used "Battletech" and "Half Life" as searches, you can see the massive difference.
Google returns with classicbattletech.com, and patrics battletech archive. Though it does return fasa.com, though this actually shows the strength of google, since fasa is the one that has/had rights to battletech, linking a site called fasa.com is not bad.
Half life... well try it yourself, the google search comes up with planethalflife, the official home page, etc. etc..
Acoona? No real good from it.
Perhaps when they say "better" results than google, they mean "better" in the term that someone might better sell a product?

Doesn't show President Bush's Website, Michael Moore Website or Jimmy Carters Website. Come on now, what type of search engine doesn't allow you to spam the results.

I guess this search engine gives a new meaning to the Chinese Room
I know I'm going to be modded up on this
Does anyone else find it weird that searching up 'google' comes up with nothing useful on Accoona? Given that Google is one of the most popular sites on the web and it's chief competitor, I find this very suspicious. Either the engine is completely useless or we're definitely seeing censorship at work. The Chinese would have to be idiots to think this is a "real" search engine.
Accoona is a horrible name imo. It doesn't sound too catchy, and the double c's, and o's don't appear too user friendly. With places like google, and yahoo, it's alot easier to spell, and type in.
Just for fun, I decided to search on flaws of communism, just before Accoona got slashdotted. Very few, if any, of the search results mentioned "flaws" in the title or summary, and the third or fourth result was actually a communist party homepage. Google, on the other hand, produces relevant documents right off the bat, in America, at least. (Sorry for the imprecision, I closed the window before deciding to post this, and couldn't get in to research.)

I bought a pretty pricey smoke and wanted to enjoy it as I strolled along the Avenue of the Stars, and I was told in no uncertain terms that smoking was not permitted. When I asked why cigars are sold in the gift shop, I was told that these cigars aren't "the smoking kind." Am I missing something? Chinese government which says its technology uses artificial intelligence to produce better results than Google
Perhaps they focused so much on "better than Google" that they forget to load-test it? AI software is not known for speed. Right now it is probably thinking:
"Hmmmm. 8000% more requests than I can handle? Should I lock up? Just process the first one? Let's check the rules database. Wup, that's flooded also. This flow-chart from Bob may offer a clue. The Chinese government was one of SEVERAL large investors. Not the only investor as the submittor tried to frame it. This search engine isn't some sort of special anti-democracy device whose sole purpose is to oppress the Chinese people. If you think Clinton was anti-democratic then you must be posting from Cananda right now considering the current administrations policies.
If we are going to start bashing everyone who has anything to do with making or receiving money from the Chinese government then there are going to be a hell of a lot of Neocon's on the list as well.
If you wanna get rich, you know that payback is a bitch
This should signal google to immediately remove all of it censorship in China. They tried to do some minimal censorship but if that wasn't enough, why not just drop out entirely and put up a non-offensive message letting the chinese people know what they're missing. If that gets blocked too, so be it. I've talked to a few students from China in the US and they say that the public apathy over censorship is downright frightening. If your content is being censored, put up a message and withhold it all. Nothing they can do about that.
With this!
In China, the search engine owns You!
"It's the height of ridiculousness to say for those 9 lines you get hundreds of millions."
My first impression is that it is using too many on-page factors (keyword density, etc) to rank sites, and too little off-site factors (incoming links, etc). This is a good thing for marketers as it makes SEO much easier.
If you ever wondered what clinton really thought of human rights..this should remove all doubt. where is the media outcry?

Have you actually tried searching for "democracy in china" on both that accoona thing and google? I'd say that _does_ show censorship.
Yea, when I search for my name with quotes it finds my page on the first non ad hit. When I search without it just finds my last name on a bunch of pages. that's .. useful. Google returns my homepage as the #1 hit for both and I don't have to scroll to see it.

Accoona shows a lot of tourist-related information on Tibet and pro-Chinese links on Tibet, that considers Tibet as any another region inside China.
Google, in the other hand, shows a lot of pages related to the movement to free Tibet from Chinese domination. Note the link to the Tibetan Government in Exile's website, which ranked #3 in Google. Also, note that the #3 match in Accoona (under "sponsored links"), shows the Chinese government's page on Tibet.
Isn't this undeniable proof that Accoona's filtering works?
Personally I prefer REAL intelligence of Google to the ARTIFICIAL intelligence of the Chinese masters.
Free Tibet
So long as they have that list of lame "sponsored links" (searching "mx records" brought up ebay trying to sell me music) above the real results, they're going to fail.
And somebody forgot to specify a background colour for the front page -- it's a lovely default grey with the logo in a white box on my screen.
China is using this to build ICBMs to target the western United States.
And of course, had this not had happened, China would have never spied on the US or have developed their own ICBM technology. Never. Therefore China doesn't deserve weather satellites, especially under the New World Order of US world imperialism.
(And have since threatened to hit Los Angeles with a nuclear warhead if we ever interfere in regards to our ally Taiwan.)

The claim is perhaps debatable, but after all the accusations about it (I too remember all the hubbub about it years ago), Clinton would have been wise to stear clear of any business dealings related to the Chinese government. Your average joe might be impressed that the Chinese used "artificial intelligence" in their search engine. Too bad he also thinks AI is the same as computer consciousness.
Why not create an open-source-based or wikipedia-like search engine that displays sites blocked by China? That would be a great and embarassing way to draw attention to censorship.

I'm no communist, but I hate seeing the debate muddied like this. Just to be clear, communism shouldn't be conflated with totalitarianism, just as capitalism shouldn't be conflated with liberty. China demonstrates that well; for most of the past half-century it was basically communist and totalitarian; now it is rapidly moving towards capitalism, but the totalitarianism shows few signs of abating, unfortunately.

We need to repeal the 22nd ammendment (term limits) so Bush and Clinton can run against each other in 2008. Can you imagine the "nukuler" fallout from the race?
Religion is a gateway psychosis. -- Dave Foley
As someone downthread mentioned, the actual quote is In the end you care more about Los Angeles than you do about Taipei. which comes with a very different posture than we'll nuke LA if you help Taiwan. What they're saying is that if we interfer in a mainland attack on Taiwan, they'll send some nukes over our way.
Would they do it? I'm not sure. What they've done with the policy, however, is akin to what we did with the Soviets during the cold war. They've established standard operating procedure and announced them publicly (our CW one was something to the effect of "if you roll tanks outside of the COMECON or Warsaw Pact, they get nuked"), and have placed the imperitus for security on the US. Strategically, not a bad move.
Would they loft a few nukes if we interveened in their efforts to retake Taiwan? I think they probably would. If we entered the fray, we would win (thanks mainly to our friend Aegis). This would be quite the affront to several thousand years of Chinese pride, being beaten by this upstart 200-year old state. So in response, they'd win they only way they can - launching on LA and the west coast.
Could they hit something? I think so. The most recently developed Russian nukes could probably beat our "missle shield" assuming it works, as the warheads are essentially cruise missles (that get delivered on an ICBM). Common knowledge is that they've allready started seling these to the Chinese. I suspect enough of them would get through to make a difference.
The other thing to remember is that in nuclear war, China considers its population to be much less significant than we do. There's over a billion of them, and their country is bigger - they can deal with 300 million deaths.
Cue The Sun...

Well who *is* on Google's side?
Six hundred million screamin' Chinamen.
I thought there was a billion screamin' Chinamen.
There was...
especially under the New World Order of US world imperialism.
You support communist imperialism, don't you?
I'm afraid I can no longer consider you a credible source of information.
And your name is TrollBridge. Ooooh, the irony.
Well it doesn't do as good as google on a search for "poo". Accoona.com gives the #1 site as something selling Koala Jewelry, while Google.com gives ratemypoo.com and some other nices ones in the top 5. That settles things in my book.
Interesting how few useful results are returned when searcing for the term "proxy avoidance"
Read the comment before you troll. It is a perfectly good comment.
It could be an underpowered search index, but searching for fun, socialist superpower-friendly topics, such as "Falun gong" sure doesn't bring up any useful hits.
Search for linux and get microsoft.com as the first result.
Feeling Lucky?
Google: china government oppression
Accoona: china government oppression
weird stuff, and then I searched google.com and the closest thing I got was google paraguay, and that was the 3rd result... hmmm....
I can't say I'm impressed with this search engine offering. I tried the most obvious query I could think of, bill clinton, which yielded a bizarre novelty site as the first result.
A Google search on the same keywords yields Bill Clinton's official White House biography.
I'll be waiting for Accoona 2.0.

well, I think it's quite clear that china is in the brutal starting phase of capitalism now.
maybe it's only clear to most chinese people.
So, now China will have the Fox News of search engines.
Both extremes meet in the middle and do the same..
How does this not disturb anyone? The govt of China gave money to an organization solely devoted to promoting the image of a former US President? Something just doesn't seem right here...
test it yourself, goto google and search fro taiwan and you get the Republic of China's official page. Search for it in Acoona there is no mention of the Republic of China anywhere.
The war with islam is a war on the beast
The war on terror is a war for peace
... I think what he means is that THEORETICAL, MARXIST communism isn't totalitarian. The fact that the bolsheviks chose that approach to communism doesn't mean communism = totalitarian.
-too lazy to type in my nick and PW. screw the karma.
....the search engine looks you up.
I mod down so you can mod up. Your welcome.
I'm not gonna touch that one... but I wouldn't smoke it if I were you. ;)

Since it's very non-American it does less censoring, is more credible and brings fortune to real people.
I will be using that one for sure. The search results will improbe btw. Their system has just started learning! If you reset the Google learning data it would yield horrible results as well with just the crawled page information!
For fun I tried a search of "Chinese Torture Tibet" without the quotes and compared it to Google. The difference between Nuns forced into suicide and a dirty joke seems a bit odd to me. Yahoo seemed to have more harsh links as well.
Accoona's results are full of spammy sites.
Books should go to Amazon, instead show http://free-adult-comix-books.sexcomix.tv
Auctions should go to eBay or Y! Auctions, instead show http://auctions.studentcenter.org
Email should got to Y! Email or hotmail, instead show http://rfc1733.x42.com
Dating should show match.com or eHarmony, instead shows every subdomain on games-ts.com.
These are just a few examples to make a point that Accoona is far from showing good results. Accoona did hire the former CEO of Compaq and Clinton himself announced the new search engine today however the engineering part of Accoona is in need of serious improvement.
Slashdot has really gone downhill.

Here are the first four Accoona searches I did:
MSN
SLATE
AOL
BAY AREA RIDERS FORUM (this is a very popular bay area-centric motorcycle forum that I regularly visit)
Compare and contrast this with the results I received from Google:
MSN
SLATE
AOL
BAY AREA RIDERS FORUM
Very, very different. After searching with these very common, popular queries, I've come to the conclusion that this new Accoona search engine isn't worth it's weight in salt. Really, it's a great testimony to how good Google really is.
Of lesser importance, the time it takes to obtain said search results is significantly longer than for Google.
" This isn't too surprising. Bill Clinton sold China our multi-stage missile technology for satellite launching. "
Bill CLinton sold it? Did you mean to say that a corporation in the military industrial complex sold it after some beurocrat OKed the deal?
I wasn't aware that Bill Clinton was manufacturing ICBM technology.
evil is as evil does
That's good advice. Let your campaign donors' country feel free to spy on you and steal nuclear warhead technology and other tech. so they get something in return. All thanks to Slick Willy.
I tried to SuperTarget my search: chinese suppression violation human rights by checking chinese and violation It didn't seem to make a difference in the results which were totally different than googles...
Google: china government oppression
Accoona: china government oppression
hmm.... One result on the main page even mentioning Chinese government oppression in the results. I'll stick to google, thanks.
In Communist China, Accoona searches YOU!
That's not irony. Someone calling YOU a genius IS irony, however.
So non-sponsored links appear below the page fold. Good job.

i searched for "cock n balls" then clicked the "cock" check box because i find cock to be more important than balls and sure enough accoona matatta the first link is to kim jong il
accoona is powered by overture, so really isn't this like a Yahoo co-venture with the a communist superpower endorsed by a former US president and future UN sec. general?
if thats what it takes to beat google
I just have to say that the Clinton reference is commpletely appropriate here. Who better for the Chinese to stick on their flagship search engine than Clinton?
After who sold China dual use missle guidance technology so they can make their nuclear warhead hit their targets? Sure the Chinese needed it for their space program...Riiiight! *wink* *wink*...
Uhh, Clinton? *ding* *ding*
Let's see, who was it that gave the North Koreans the technology they needed to kick start their nuclear power program? Sure Kim Jong Il needed it for energy to power his hot tub...Riiight! *wink* *wink*...
Uhh, Clinton? *ding* *ding*
Oh, one more, who was it who came up with the great idea of managing terrorism through law enforcement and therefore preventing curcial intelligence information from being used to defend this country by sealing it under a Grand Jury? Hell no wonder the CIA didn't know what it was talking about.
Uhh, Clinton? *ding* ding* *ding*
If I were the Chinese, he's the first person I'd pick too. He's done more to weaken the US and put this country in danger than any President I've studied.
welcome our new web indexing Red Chinese overlords.
I for one welcome our new [insert main topic] overlords.
Hmmm, I can't find any results for the "falun gong" group?!?! Any ideas as to why?
This is creepy stuff, very Orwellian. If the US is helping China protect its citizens from collecting information freely, how is China hepling the US in return?

This is stupid. Why on earth would I want some hunk of metal using "artificial intelligence" to determine which keywords I want to search for? That's my job. I have real intelligence, and I'm perfectly capable of determining which keywords to search for myself. What I'm not capable of is searching through a few billion webpages in under a second. That's its job.
Also, the name is stupid. They tried a little too hard on that one.
Also, the search engine sucks. If I search for "Fat Tire Beer", nowhere do I find New Belgium, the manufacturer. This result is first on Google.
Also, they're evidently afraid of competition. If I search for Accoona on Google, www.accoona.com is the top result. If I search for Google on Accoona, I get a lot of non-printing characters. But no link to Google.
- James
The company seeks to distinguish itself from Google, Yahoo Inc. and growing list of other search engine players by using artificial intelligence to make the results more relevant, said Pfeiffer.
There's some humor in this statement in that Accoona seems to be using Overture for at least its sponsored results. One example. But then, most modern "competitors" of Google and Yahoo seem to fall back on the technology of one or the other to some degree.
You've been watching political mudsling ads again, haven't you?
Ardente veritate incendite tenebras mundi
Regardless of people's opinions of the government of china, the fact remains that 'Communism' as practised in that nation is in fact Maoism, and does not have overly much in comming with Marxist communism. The fact that people routinely label things as 'Communist = Bad' is somewhat disheartening on a forum where people are expected to be capable of rational thought. Toeing the capitalist party line and just deriding communism because the media told you to makes you no better than someone who mindlessly parrots Maoist dogma in China. You just think your government allows you to have 'free' and 'uncensored' media, while the chinese government is more blatant about it. And if you don't know what I'm talking about, try searching google for 'US Soldier casket pictures'
To sell legitimacy, however tainted it may be.
In Soviet Washington the swamp drains you.
Yeah, in theory everything works. But the question remains...why is it the communist countries that are totalitarian? Communism has the most blood on it of any 'ism'. It's an ideal, but not one that's really compatible with human nature.
Thank you, no. I do not support the work of imperialist stooges.

It seems as most urls in the results are encoded to go through www20.overture.com.. Are they just updating their database to give better search results in the future or are they possibly monitoring what links [chinese] people click?

I've focused enough on the government. Let's focus on the Chinese people. Most of them support the actions of their government in censoring information.
Look at your American universities. The engineering and business classes are overflowing with Chinese folks. Now, look at meetings of Amnesty International. My. My. The Chinese are woefully underrepresented at such meetings. Why? They talk about all sorts of "offensive things" like (1) fighting censorship, (2) freedom of speech, (3) freedom of assembly, etc.
If you want to know why China failed as a society, shove a mirror in front of a Chinese national. The answer is in the mirror.

I did a search on these words, and 14 of the first 15 hits were to pages with Guns N Roses lyrics. And after the 15th site? It didn't list any more, even though the top of the page said "Results 11 - 21 of 87173". Going to the next ten showed no links, while the top of the page said "Results 21 - 31 of 87173". This could just be due to server overload or some other slashdot effect, though.

China perhaps calls themselves communists (I don't know if they actually do that? Soviet did not afaik), however that does not make china a communist country.
Please use the term "totalitarian nation/state/country", as that is more appropriate.

Guess what, when you submit a URL, it is sent by email and not via a mail script or something as used by other search engines... microsoft touch, no doubt... ;)
Google owned the market and Altavista before that. The only way Google can improve at this point is to add a "search within your search results" option. Microsoft used to have this on their knowledge base and it was incredibly helpful. For example, you search for "bash shell", scripts, convert and you get a ton of things you don't care about. In order to fine tune this search, you then have the option to further filter the results. For some mysterious reason Microsoft dropped this feature from their search engine.

Except for the fact that Clinton forced Israel to release Mohammed Atta (terrorist from 9/11) under the Oslo agreement. VP Gore also did a number on Col. Ollie North about his (North's) concern about bin Laden. Gore laughed when Col. North said we should be worried about Laden. What a team?

Not very scientific, but I tried "height mt. robson" in Google and the first result had the height of the mountain in the blurb. Tried it on Accoona and I got a page of Hotels. None of which were even in Canada even. Also it took about 10 times as long to even bring up the WRONG results. Nope. Still not going to stop using Google.
It's about time some competitors to Google started appearing in other countries. Not sure I'd choose China though. Come on Sweden - what can you do for us?
#1 is called "scored OR" and has been around since the 1960s. In fact, every major web search engine used to use this approach until the web got really big.
#2 is called term weighting, and has also been around since the 1960s. These days it's generally not exposed to users, but most search engines have this capability under the hood.
#3 is found in any metasearch engine.
So how is this AI, exactly?
I hate to distract from all the discussion about China, but the search engine itself is a mess.
I tried my standard test keyword, which is obscure enough to not get too many responses but real enough to get a good set (kw is "medienkunst" which is german for "media art" and also one of my domains, medienkunst.com).
On Accoona I got a bunch of sites, mostly domains I registered at some point, some active and some not. All of them have this "info" button that shows info about "my" company (some true some obvious crap).
It would appear that they just trolled whois and grouped domains together by who registered them, and then made a bunch of wild-monkeys-flying-out-of-their-asses assumptions about that connection.
So, if that's their "AI" I don't think G has to worry, Clinton or no Clinton.

So a ex US President, helped launch a Chinese company (communist) create an application that will deny access to people in china to access information on democracy.
This same company gave an "undisclosed amount (aka large amount)" of money so to open a library (free information) with the name of a ex us president in a democracy.
sooo.....
democracy helps communists block free information to communists about democracy
while the communists are helping democracy supply more free information to democracy

Search for "human rights" on Google, and the first links you get are to Human Rights Watch, the UN, and Amnesty International. The sponsored links are clearly relevant.
What do you get when you search Accoona for "human rights"? "Human rights on eBay. Find human rights items at low prices." The first non-sponsored link is to holysmoke.org, which doesn't appear to be about human rights.

This is actually great, now we can compare results. After doing a quick comparision on a few keywords I noticed that google is actually more censored.
I.E. search both sites for keyword "zionist" you see that accoona gives slighty more results that weights against pro-zionist results. While the google results only returned one on the third page.
