There's this really kewl little script out there... I can't remember the name of it, but basically you enter the IP of a system on your local LAN and the system completely and totally freezes up. Turn it off and the system operates like it just froze... no data loss, nothing. So, I suggest a simple Linux box running NTOP. Find the highest traffic users during the outbreak, and DDoS 'em. Even rebooting won't help them. :) Of course, there's many tools out there that incorporate NTOP, Nessus, NMAP, etc to find which systems are vulnerable and all that, but without local access to the systems themselves to turn them off or patch them, you should just DDoS until the outbreak goes away and those offending systems can be fixed.

So thanks to today's news that Symantec programs may execute programs that should be flagged, one must now only use a solid product like Symantec Anti-Virus to load up software to remove Microsoft's anti-spyware software. Beautiful. Perhaps I should save everyone the time and hassle and just make a website with a malformed jpg or gif that loads an ActiveX script to then download the trojan and thus get it all done in one shot. Vulnerability after vulnerability after vulnerability. Perhaps this guy wasn't so far off.

Of course, I can't help but point out the obvious: rumors keep abounding that M$ will charge for its anti-spyware and anti-virus softwares. So let me see if I'm clear on this... they write shitty code that I'm forced to use (since the apps I need only run on Win32), and then I have to pay again for software to keep people from exploiting the software that was shitty to begin with. Isn't that a bit like selling you a piece of shit car, then charging you to use your warranty when the clutch fails on day #2 of ownership? You know, many of us thought that the day would come that M$ would charge for access to WindowsUpdate. Is there anything they won't charge for? Don't they ever say "we fucked up... here's a freebie on us"? Or "you already paid $300 for our OS... here's a way to secure it for free".

Well, the CTRL+ & CTRL- is the page/size resizing feature. It goes back to Netscape 7 and some early Mozilla releases. In either of those browsers, you could hit CTRL+ to make a page's font bigger in case the screen resolution was too small. I never encountered this with Firefox, but my guess is that early versions (that were based on Mozilla/Netscape source code) simply didn't implement the feature properly. Even with the latest Mozilla, I still occasionally see the left-most column on /. appear to blend with the center column, but a refresh fixes it and its never bad enough to make things unreadable.

I know, I know... call him a Troll. Actually, I saved my company upwards of $15,000 a year by not renewing software and support contracts for our Nokia firewalls and instead replacing them with Smoothwall (a Linux firewall). I was even able to install Smoothwall onto the old Nokia IP350 hardware.

I also avoided upgrade costs to XP for about 10 of our 50 systems. This last year, we upgraded all from Win2K to XP. However, 10 of the systems were only used by temps, contractors, and consultants and only for web browsing, webmail, etc. So we installed FC3 on them saved the almost $200 each on XP upgrade licenses.

Oh, and I save the whole company countless amounts of money when I installed Firefox and set it as the default browser. Pop-ups went away, re-installs resulting from spyware went away, etc. It saved my time (not having to do re-installs and system restores) and end-user times (not having their system unusable while I fixed them).
