There was a third flawed varient that had a problem switching between real and protected mode that could lock up the system. Those chips would be stamped that they were only certified for 16 bit apps. The ones that tested good had a double sigma stamp on them. Neither the 386sx nor 386dx had math coprocessors. The 486 however was a different story. The 486DX had a coprocessor but the 486SX did not.

Then there was the Intel GMA91x / VIsta Capable fiasco where a large percentage of laptops and computers that were fairly recent did not have the hardware capability to run Aero Glass. Despite the somewhat steep hardware requiremnts that Aero Glass had, I find it funny that there are even more cool effects than Aero Glass has under Linux with Compiz Fusion despite being based on an old OpenGL implementation. In fact, I've shown people how "this laptop can't run Aero Glass but it can do this" and then I rotate the screen or set a terminal window on fire.

If you run Process Explorer and see a lot of interrupts occurring, it's almost always a processor or motherboard. Boot from a BART PE disc and see if it is slow there. If so, it's hardware. Also I've seen bad CD-ROM drives on several occasions cause this. Or if you suspect malware. Take it to GeekSquad ask them to boot your computer up in PE mode from an MRI disc and run a READ-ONLY FACE Scan in targeted mode. That will scan with 8 different AS/AV products. Usually they won't charge you for this because it's a scan and not a removal.

  16. As someone who has done a few of these "upgrades" on Vista To XP Upgrade Triples In Price, Now $150 · · Score: 2, Informative

The main problem with people who want to do a manual XP install on a new PC is not being prepared spec-wise before doing it. They think they can just buy any old off the shelf system and boot from an old XP disc they had from years ago and that's not the case. The first issue is SATA drives. XP doesn't natively support SATA drives from the install CD. On most Dells you can bypass this by putting the controller into compatability mode in the bios but once set if you try to revert back to native mode it will bluescreen at boot. If you know the exact SATA controller, you can slipstream the drivers into the install CD, but that requires some expertise to do. Second, peripheral drivers. It is getting harder to get drivers for lots of things (especially laptops) for XP. If a system came with Vista-64, the manufacturer may not even have have 32 bit Vista drivers. If I can get ahold of a user before they make their purchase. I'll try to tell them to buy a straight Intel system. Intel processor and chipset. For those systems the drivers are typically available from Intel or as an alternate Dell who has XP driver support for all of their Optiplex systems (which you can usually reuse the drivers for another Intel system). Lastly is the audio. New systems use the new Microsoft HD Audio bus, which is available as a hotfix, but onboard audio chipset makers like Sigmatel, Conexant, Analog Devices don't typically host audio drivers on their site, and if you load similar drivers from another manufacturer, you may find that some ports on the computer don't function or the mixer may be messed up. So I can understand Dell starting to charge more since they have to grease the wheel with the hardware manufacturers to get driver support.

It's not even a GSM issue. It's a TDMA encoding issue. Old IS-136 phones and Nextel (iDEN) phones cause interference as well. Because the signal is in a repeating sequence it forms a buzz or click. CDMA phones don't have a set transmit pattern so the sounds don't form repeating waves and interfere. IS-136, GSM and iDEN all use TDMA encoding. GSM causes more of a buzz. IS-136 and iDEN cause more static bursting and popping. My old AT&T IS-136 phone used to make my old CRT shake violently whenever it resynched itself with the cell tower.
