It's probably too late for this post to be noticed, but did anyone notice the line about Air Force One and garage door openers. It sparked a synapse.
I recently read about the attempts on the Pakistani President's life. Both bombing attempts failed because of anti-terrorism devices installed in his motorcade. The terrorists couldn't detonate the bombs until he was out of range.
There are all sorts of reasons something like this could have been used in Vegas. Who knows who was nearby. Furthermore, who is to say whether or not it was a test of a "spotlight" satellite transmission.
Think about it. Terrorists are using cellphones to trigger bombs in Iraq. The keyless entry systems are simple, off the shell wireless switches. They would be terrific trigger devices for short range detonations.
Maybe I'm only an ignorant sw-architect, but why on earth do you need the source code in order to develop for a target system (i.e. an MPEG hardware decoder)?
The American concept is the exact opposite of this statement. The American ideal is that the government is granted it's rights, not the other way around.
Americans citizens are not granted freedom or rights by the government and do not owe the government for the priviledge of being free or having rights.
I'm a high school coach and I get exposed to kids on drugs for ADD. I also have had a boss or two taking drugs for this type of thing.
My experience with both groups of people is that the drugs make things worse. It's a bad cycle. There is a 3 month ajustment where you are unhappy and wierd. Then, you get 6 months of being unnaturally happy. This is followed by 3 months of the drug not working. Then, you get a new drug and ground hog day starts all over again.
It's really a crappy cycle and my philosophical problem with it is that you are going to spend (hopefully) a long time taking these drugs. How can you possibly expect that a drug will work for a period of years every day?
The problem is that how do you define "do anything with them for 2 years."
Does that mean successfully market? Have someone pay to use it? Actively market it? Continue development?
See what I mean? A hard term of X years is not subjective and is easy to define and enforce. Your terminology brings a whole new issue to patent enforcement. Plaintiffs would need to prove that they weren't "squatting" on their ideas.
I think a lot of you anti-intellectual property rights people don't really understand how important IP rights are to capitalistic societies. To me, it is anti-property rights and that is scary.
If an idea is too abstract to be owned by a man because truth is "owned" by the universe, then couldn't you make the leap that land cannot be owned by man because land is "owned" by the earth. It's a slippery slope that I don't want any part of.
Um... yeah. 3D product demos, 3D extreme sports videos, 3D telemedicine, 3D telemaintenance, 3D videoconferencing....

>> Welcome to capitalism, where populist media determines public opinion.
It's better than socialistic dictatorships where government controlled media determines public opinion.
I'll take my chances with the free press and a free public any day.
1 - First of all if you are geek at 12, there is a 90% chance you will be at 17.
2 - If you are a geek at 17, there is a 99% chance you will be in college.
3 - If you don't already, work out and play sports (even if you suck).
4 - If you suck at your chosen sport, choose to be the meanest bastard on the field or ice. Get penalties. It's better to be the guy who is too much of a penalty liability than the guy who falls down when someone looks at him.
5 ---- ALL OF YOU SLASHDOT GUYS NEED TO LEARN THIS ONE ---- My dad always told me... ask 10 women to fuck and 1 will say yes. It's good advice and it is true.

Work hard and $$ and vacation time follow. You cannot legislate vacation time without souring an economy.
Look at... Europe. You whiny btches are worried about 5% unemployment? Try 15%.

The sky is falling!
Every time I read about global warming and the ozone hole, all I can think of is "the sky is falling!"
The fable of Chicken Little is supposed to teach children that some people expect the end of the world and look for signs of it constantly.
Unfortunately, it seems that a whole generation of pseudo-scientists have decided that Chicken Little was right.
