They sell pre-paid mastercards in a few convienence stores around here... dunno if you have to be over 18 or whatever (I passed that mark quite some time ago)
The real difference between lists is that on the *nix side, the only problem I see that is related to a machine that is either completely firewalled off, not running the service in question is the weak/no password issue - which is on both lists (what was #11 on each?). Which means that most likely, it is possible to build a non- service offering system that can act just fine as a client and local machine with a *nix (make mine slackware thanks!) base.
The windows list though contains several other items that users would constantly be using (damm users) - email clients and browsers.
...Sounds like a perfect use for knoppix or something similar - perhaps enough to boot and connect to a terminal server (either X forwarding or windows term server via rdesktop or something), so the sys admin only has 1 machine to keep updated.
Well, since it is running linux, it may be possible to run a small game server off it as well. I'm not sure how well the VIA cpu will handle it, but since a dedicated server doesn't do any of the graphics processing, it may have a chance.
Housing here in Gainesville is fscked. Either you can afford to live there, and therefore the rent is low, so it becomes government housing and all your neighbors are crack addicts, or your mommy and daddy pay $800+ per month for an apartment in the "student zone".
As a lifelong resident of Gainesville, I hope this does keep a small percentage of students from coming back.
Should you feel the need to start a company motto amongst your cow-orkers in the cube farm in order to raise morale, try something like:
We, the unwilling, lead by the uncaring, have done so much with so little, that we are now prepared to do the near impossible with next to nothing! Hail [$CEO_NICKNAME | $CORP_NAME | $CORP_MASCOT]
It is a few years later than hyped, but I think this may be one of the first big examples (other than the machinima with teh QuakeX engines) of that "small/low budget production house music/movie/multimedia art extravaganza" that PCs, software, the 'net and broadband were supposed to enable.
Start by investing in some wireless. Make it a simple open AP, with a nice high tower (since everyone will have high TV antennas, etc already). Put a few pringles can antenna up and see who tries to connect. Get out and meet the closest neighbors and see if there are any other geeks, or teenagers desperate for kazaa/pr0n/etc. If you discover a user base, it may be cost worthy to do a co-op on a leased line for bandwidth and a community wirless network to share it.
Or just wait. I've just gotten DSL and I'm out in the boonies (10+ miles to nearest stoplight or cable TV outlet in all directions). Until they upgraded the Big Box down the line to provide DSL services, it provided me with a nice 24kbps connection with a crapload of packetloss.
You can have my Northgate Omni keyboard when you pry it from my cold dead hands... Got it with my 386, still use it today with one of those 9pin->PS2 adapters.
Like someone posted way up top with that lynx script to dump results to/dev/null, you can just get the md5sum of a small, constantly changing file, trim 10 or so characters out of it, and slap a www. and a.com on it.
Just using a random IP wouldn't be the point, since I'm guessing the idea is to ddos the verisign servers...
Naw, this is talking about *local security*.
At my house, we enforce local security with a 12 gauge shotgun.
Sometimes, the best tool for the job does not involve technology.
And figure out if this still beats a station wagon (or SUV or whatever) loaded with DVDs, CDs, backup tapes, etc.
Are nations eligible for the X prize?
Seems like they'd have the resources if nothing else (Goooooo Carmack!)
Floppy and floppy cable from my 386 (dual 3.5 and 5.25 drive), and my Northgate Omni keyboard from the same 386 on my new (3 month old) system.
I also use a Toshiba 486sx33 laptop with 12mb ram - it runs Slackware 8.1 fine for everything console.

ICQ had/has this as well, in the direct chat (not im) mode.
Im not doing anything bad,
And when they came for me, no one was left to speak for me....
Didn't the BOFH convince the Boss that you could store data on the network cables, causing him to order quite a few spools of the stuff?

Shouldn't be too hard to play with the script to get it to name files with the user's name, date, time, and then email it to them as an attachment.

Yeah, but there is no parity bit or other way of recovering the missing info from the other 5 drives.
What has to be a resident in the state to get the benefits of this bill? The human, or the mail server?
Do you think they'll have a Spanish Inquisition? 'Cause I don't think I'd expect it...

Well, I guess that beats littering...
You can get anything you want....

dyndns.org works great for me now on dsl, and worked great for me on dialup too.

Or a 356... coincidentally, today is Ferry Porsche's birthday...
