``Linux'' is the name of the kernel most often used in free software systems. But the operating system as a whole contains many other components, some of them products of the Foundation's GNU Project, others written elsewhere and published under free software licenses; the totality is GNU, the free operating system on which we have been working since 1984.
It makes it seem that anything I write and release under a free software license becomes part of some new GNU operating system. If I release a piece of software, who says I want it to have anything to do with GNU? It's almost as though they are claiming some sort of ownership for all free software, and claiming the right to put it all together and call it GNU.
Your points are somewhat valid, but let's reword it a little.
If I were to buy an Xbox, I could legally use it as a boat anchor, a footwarmer, or to run any software I wish to run on that computer.
This should read: If I were to buy an Xbox, I could legally use it as a boat anchor, a footwarmer, or to run any software I CAN run on that computer.
If I wanted to, I could use my computer as a ski-boat, but it just won't float without any modifications. If I somehow figure out how to make it float and hook an engine up to the back, more power to me. But if I can't, I don't see how I can blame Dell.. and I don't see why Dell would be interested in my ski-boat modification. If I wanted to, I should be able to sell my ski-boat modification on my own though.
The best part about Windows NT4 and IE2 is that you can't install IE 5 until you install service pack 4 (I think it's 4, might be 3).
Then, you can't access Microsoft's site to get Service Pack 4 or Internet Explorer, becuase you only have IE2.
You have to make sure that you have SP6a and IE5 around before you can do pretty much anything with it now.
The Panasonic DMR-E80H is also coming out soon. It is a Progressive-Scan DVD Video Recorder with Built-in 80 GB Hard Disk & Time Slip Playback records to DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs.
These Panasonic units are nice. You can record and playback at the same time, so you can kind of time shift, like a tivo (they call it Chasing Playback). It's better than a VCR also because you can just hit record, and it will automatically find empty space for you, so you don't have to rewind/fast forward to find it manually.
Also, the DMR-E80H is only $799.95 MSRP.
The DMR-E50K is out now, but doesn't have the hard drive, and is $499.95.
The idea that their is any ECONOMICS to be gained by a lunar presence is utter nonsense. The best possible outcome would be a sulf-sustaining community after 30 years and trillions of dollars.
Funny, you could say this about the Bush family [living on Earth] too.
I'm actually pretty glad to see China moving in this direction. When rice-bowls start going empty because of a boon-doggle space program, maybe they'll be some sparks for change and revolution.
Unfortunately, with the current crackpots in office, the US seems to be heading in the same direction. Tax cuts, huge spending increases/deficits, wars, etc.. Who would have realized that Clinton would look like a hero with his surplus, active sex life, and pot smoking [but not inhaling]. People are almost wishing that Bush would get into a sex scandal so life could get back to normal.
I just saw a cure for this type of thing on TV yesterday (it wasn't for beets, but for something else like spinach?, but should be the same). The secret is to just take toilet paper rolls and put them around the stem so that they are about an inch under the ground, and a couple inches up. You have to be sure that you have enough at the top to protect from whatever the pest is, but also have to leave it low enough not to affect the sun light.
Hope you eat the greens on your beets, thems the best part!
I own the land (or rather, part of it), its just a matter of doing something with it (like building a cabin, and getting some money to live on for the rest of my life).
Getting a power source isn't hard. Solar panels and wind power should be more than enough if you don't waste it. If you need more, find a lawn mower engine and a DC motor/generator and you can charge up your batteries even when the sun is out. If you're really ambitious and need the excercise, get a bike with a DC motor, and you can keep your batteries topped up while listening to your mp3 player.
The best way to take care of this problem while still allowing custom sizes and the ability to change the font size in the browser is to use ems instead of pts or pxs.
(Typical html type brackets replaced with ][)
An em is a unit of distance equal to the point size of a font. When used in stylesheets, an em refers to the size of the parent element.
P { font-size: 20pt } B { font-size: 1.5em }
In the example any [B] text within the [P] tag would be 30 points, because the em is one and a half times the size of it's parent, the [P] tag.
You can still adjust the type size using browser preferences (which is important for those with impairedeyesight). Printed pages will have appropriate text size.
True, there are different ways to take that last statistic, such as:
1) Canada has less crime per capita. 2) Canada has not enough or bad police officers. 3) Canada doesn't have enough laws, too liberal a society. 4) The US has too many laws, too restricted a society.
.. suggests that while Canada has been helpful in the fight against terrorism, it doesn't spend enough on policing and places too much emphasis on civil liberties.
This is interesting.. the following are some stats I found on crime in Canada and the US (and Sweden, see this page.)
- Homicides per 100,000......Canada-1.8..US-5.5 - Assault/Threat per 100,000.Canada-4.0..US-5.7 - Prisoners per 100,000......Canada-118..US-546
Why not just use Linux Software RAID? That way you don't have to worry about drivers, and don't need to spend the extra money on RAID controllers, just add any normal ATA66/100/133 controller. The same sort of thing is available in Win2k server (don't know about other NT versions).
If you have a motherboard that has on-board RAID already, that's 4 channels, add another card, and you can have 6 channels, enough for a terabyte of RAID5.
While the laws of the American government are necessarily enforceable in other countries, the government does have its ways. Consider the following that has come out recently after Canada decided that it may want to decriminalize marijuana:
The U.S. threat is clear. If Chrétien doesn't blink, the U.S. will have to slow down the movement of goods across the border.
Walters said a flood of Canadian pot moving south becomes an American problem, meaning increased border patrols.
"You expect your friends to stop the movement of poison to your neighbourhood," Walters said. "And that is what's going on here. If we were sending toxic substances to your young people, you would be and should be upset."
In short, Canada is being seen in some quarters here as a pot-crazed, irresponsible nation living in the late 1960s.
First, we're soft on Saddam. Now, we're soft on pot.
And this from another paper:
Ottawa's plan to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana and Vancouver's move to open North America's first injection site for drug users likely will force the U.S. to tighten border controls to prevent increased drug trafficking, said David Murray, special assistant in the Office of National Drug Control Policy.
If the American government wants to, they can certainly exert pressure on other governments into changing their laws.
I think I'm going to start my own RIAA (RIAA is the Recording Industry Against Artists, right?) in Canada.. then I can just randomly sue people, and get free money.. seems like one of those Slashdot things:
1) Form local/regional RIAA 2) Sue anyone who has mp3s 3) Profit!
These might be 2 obvious points, but I couldn't see them posted anywhere:
1) Have you tried contacting the guy using something as simple as e-mail, etc.? It is conceivable the the guy selling the books doesn't know that what he is doing is wrong, or that a little persistence and just the threat of legal action may stop him.
2) Getting the guys real name and address from ebay may be more difficult than you think. I know that I wouldn't sign up for an ebay account with my own name, and the e-mail address that I used would be some obscure one. If he signed up using a fake name and an e-mail address using a domain that he setup with another fake name, then you may be out of luck.
2. They issue a 550 response before the client has a chance to issue a greeting. There are two allowed responses at that point: 554 and 220. 550 is right out.
Do they? This is what I get when I telnet to one of the servers listed in their MX records:

I have to agree here, you do not want to get suckered into anything by the doctor. The doctors wanted to give my significant other an episiotomy, not because it was really necessary, but because the doctor in training beside him needed to know how to do it..
Needless to say this is bad, and did not happen, for many reasons, most of which was my GF and I yelling at the doctor and saying that there was no way in hell that he was going to do it.. He still wanted to, and 'recommended' it, but in the end, it wasn't necessary.
Also, in case you don't know, an 'episiotomy' is the Surgical incision of the perineum (The portion of the body in the pelvis occupied by urogenital passages and the rectum, bounded in front by the pubic arch, in the back by the coccyx, and laterally by part of the hipbone) during childbirth to facilitate delivery.
Same for you, you should recycle what you buy. Someone else doesn't pay for you to recycle your bottles, plastics and paper. You consume, you pay.
In Quebec, Canada, you pay $0.05 for every can and plastic soda bottle you buy, and $0.10 for every beer bottle. You get this money back when you return the bottle for re-use/recycling. I don't know how many other places have similar programs, but if I find a bottle on the street and recycle it, someone is indeed paying me to recycle.. Less litter on the streets, a little more cash for kids, and less waste.
Have you tried anything like Roger Mayer's wah upgrades? I've yet to actually purchase one, but they seem interesting, and people on the web seem to give them good reviews..
Roger Mayer did work for Jimi Hendrix, and made effects for Hendrix, Beck, Page, etc..
It's really hard to say "in it's class" these days. Is a Golf or a Jetta in it's class? It's pretty easy to get a Volkwagen way up there in cost (up to say $35k canadian, when a Civic is ~$20k to start.
As for me, I understand this type of attitude as well. I drive an '89 Nissan 240SX (S13 200SX to non-North Americans) that has had quite a bit done to it (SR20DE engine swap, more boost, etc..), and I'm more than competitive compared to a stock 350Z, but given the choice, I still would have started with the 350Z, nor can I understand why you would start with a Civic for a drag car, unless you are really up for a challenge. If that's the case, then I'm all for it. Let's see what you can do with a Civic, and let's see you take all the other imports out there. But if you really think that you can make a Civic faster than any car out there (and there are lots of people who think that their Ci
vic is the fastest car 'in the city'), then I think that you are sadly mistaken. Just my 2 cents.
Well, reprogramming your ECU for performance reasons can push your engine well past proper tolerances, screw up emissions, and just generally fuck over your car -- that means if you touch the ECU for performance reasons, you can kiss your warranty goodbye.) Failing that, disconnect the bell that makes the ding, either at the fusebox (if you can), or at the source.
There have been quite a few cases of the dealers trying to do this (voiding all warranty, including warranty on non-related parts), but technically the dealer has to prove that the chip or reprograming caused the problem.
If I have problems with my brakes, I'm sure it could be argued that it could be because of the increased power due to my cheap, but realisticly this is probably not the case, even though the dealers would like you to think it is
In other words, [some/most] dealers would probably do almost anything possible to screw you out of your warranty, because they want to make a quick buck or two.
But Mr. Rascon is sure he does not want a Lexus or a Nissan 350Z. "You get a Lexus or 350Z, and, sure, people will look at you, but that's now what this is about," he said. "This is about getting into something I built and whipping a 350Z. That's the best feeling in the world."
Why wouldn't you want a Nissan 350Z? Seems to me that if you can make a Civic fast, you could make a 350Z faster.. Or is there some sort of weird pride involved in having a Civic that is faster than a stock 350Z (but slower than a modified one)? If I had the money, I'd just buy the car with the most potential, which (I'm pretty sure) isn't a Civic.
.. stereo equipment that can display pictures on the television...
I don't see why they would bother with the video output, only to have it display pictures (and I assume some on-screen information). How much use am I going to get out of the 'look at my pictures on the television' feature? Just like the Kodak PhotoCD - How much use did their hardware (to view photos on a TV) get?
This piece of 'stereo' equipment already has quite a bit of computer equipment in it (to play music and look at pictures), so why not just go all the way and add the movie functionality to it? And since you've already got the ethernet port, and the computer, why not just add the browser and e-mail components? See what I mean, why don't they just make a computer and put it in a fancy box?
.. but the 10 baseT ethernet connection sure does seem state-of-the-art!
If I were to get one, I would need a set-top-box that has at least 100 baseT ethernet, the ability to play MPEG, AVI, DiVX, etc.., and the ability to surf the web and send and receive e-mail.. I guess that's why I have a computer in my living room. All these other boxed just don't have enough functionality for me.
Can someone explain this part:
