I think the reason for going with a hard drive has part to do with the fact that the transfer rates for Blu-ray drives at the moment have slower transfer rate than the current crop of DVD drives (Sorry, I couldn't find the original article that mentionned this. The third comment sums the issue nicely). Basically, the 360 has a 12x DVD drive that runs at 11mbps x 12 and PS3 has a 2X BD-ROM drive that runs at 36mbps x 2. So the 360 has faster transfer from the game disk.
Also according to this, you will be able to install PS3 on the hard drive to reduce load times. For example, Genji does it, and it's 4 gig to install. Suddenly that 20 gig HD in the PS3 doesn't seem that big. If people have to install their games to get any decent load times, then the 500$ PS3 might well as bad as a 360 with a memory card. I mean, install 4 games on your console and you're almost out of storage. At least with the 360 it's almost transparent when you have an HD that you are caching stuff to it (that's why you only have 13 gigs instead of 20 when you format it, about 7 gigs are kept for game caches). And I've yet to see horrible load times on the 360, except for Oblivion.
Will today's release as a high-priority, force-fed update fix this issue?
Seriously? Forc fed? How about the fact that by default Firefox also forces it's updates on the user? Which in my case was catastrophic because Firefox 2.0 is the most unstable release I've ever used of Firefox. Tabs not switching when I click on them after a while, keyboard focus broken which after a while forces me to restart the browser because any key typed to enter text on a web page is somewhow sent to the text search box at the bottom, even tough I didn't even ask for it to be displayed, right-click menus that are blank (when all the other right-click menus in all the other running aps are working fine). Seriously, I haven't seen IE7 yet, but I don't remember prefering a previous version of IE to the current one. Which is not the case with Firefox 2.0.
On a side note, what's with the retarded way Firefox still handles bookmarks? It's sooooooooooo Netscape 2.0. Overwrite bookmarks when one has the same name as another, please! Seriously. How am I suppose to organize my bookmarks on a website when they all have the same name? Rename then of coruse! But Firefox doesn't provide ANY feedback whatsoever that a bookmark has that name. It simply adds the new one with the same name. At least IE asks me "Do you want to overwrite?" and then I go no and change the name. Ideally a note on the dialog would say that there is already a bookmark with that name.
I have the same Sansa model as you (270, 6 gigs, love it!) and I've been frustrated with syncing it with WMP11Beta too. Basically, everytime I would unplug it and plug it back in, WMP would say that there was no media on the device and that I could start filing it up, even tough it reported that the Sansa has only like 50 megs left on it. When I use Yahoo's software (god forbid... the Interface is horrible, but at least it works), it properly scans my Sansa and everything. I haven't trying syncing yet because I already have more music than my player can carry, so syncing everything just can't work because I have encoded my music at too high a bitrate (I can only fit about 800 songs on it instead of the 1500 songs x 4min x 128kbps boasted by Sandisk marketing). I wanted to use WMP to syncing my stuff because it has a transcode option in it but I can't get it to display my Sansa content correctly after I unplug it. Maybe the final build is fixed. I'll try it later.
and commerical removal/editing (which should be a standard feature on any DVR with a DVD-R drive, but aren't) Why should it be a feature? A PVR is nothing more than a digital VCR. Why have ad removal when you can simply fast-forward through the ad? It pleases the broadcasters because it is no different than fast-forwarding on a VCR and it pleases the user because he enjoys the same basic functionality he always had.
I didn't mean that it is right for Microsoft do to it. I just underlined the fact that you were getting a better version of it on the Marketplace. Which for the folk who are lucky enough to have 5.1 surround and 720P is a hell of a deal, because the trailer is terrific. But, if you go to websites like GameTrailers.com or TeamXbox and watch the Windows Media version of it, you'll actually get the hi-def version of it. (I can't vouch for the audio being in 5.1 tough, my computer is not hooked up to my home theater, only my 360 is) So why is Microsoft giving it to Gold Live Members when everybody else is getting it for free everywhere else?
Open mouth, insert foot. I watched the Quicktime version of it and it wasn't in 720P. The Windows media version on the other hand is the real deal. Silly me.
Couldn't they have picked Hideo Kojima in that case? I mean, he is a respectable developer and I'm sure he has a lot of insightful comments on the industry. Or they could have picked Hironobu Sakaguchi when he was making games for Square-Enix.
I can't wait to see Jaffe's first game for the PS3 online store. We'll see then and he is *that* good.
The system mover for the PS3 is Resistance: Fall of Man. It's interesting to be reading this because it certainly might be a system seller over in North America and Eur^H^H^H, what is going to be the system seller in Japan? Genji (Flip crab for massive damage!) and Riiiiiiiiiiidge Raaaaaacer probably. (Seriously, people are still going to have a laugh at this for a while.) Which, if I'm not mistaken, aren't popular franchise or appeal much to North American audience. This launch line up if really geared toward North America. In the meantime, Microsoft is launching quite a few Japanese high-profile games and Nintendo is riding the DS wave, showing off a really cool controller and hoping it will carry the Wii (it will).
It's going to be really interesting to see how things are going in Japan in February.
Microsoft said time and time again they wanted a 10 million head start before Sony launched. They are referring to the fact that Sony shipped 10 million PS2s before the first Xbox and Gamecube launched. They have failed, as Sony and Nintendo are shipping a month from now. It's going to be a tighter race then Microsoft would have liked.
I'm tired of hearing about this guy. Seriously. His claim to fame is one game that is incredibly violent and has some of the most inane jump puzzles these days. I have to admit the fighting is decent, but for me it doesn't even touch Ninja Gaiden on the original Xbox. I can't wait for the PS3 owners to get their hands on Ninja Gaiden Sigma and play a good hack-and-slash game.
Why is everybody quoting this guy? He made ONE good game and now he's some sort of expert??? I've stop reading articles about him the day I realized he was just being arrogant. Marc Rein of Epic is also falling in that category, tough he at least has severals hits (even though they're all called Unreal) and regardless of the controversy around some of his statements, he does make a valid point every now and then.
As for Jaffe, he mostly trash talks the competition and thinks he's some sort of god. I'm reading more about his guy than Miyamoto or Sakaguchi. What the...?
Except, the trailer on the 360 is in crystal clear 720P with 5.1 digital surround sound and this is some quarter-HD res with stereo sound. It's not THE real deal.
Couldn't you compile a completely static version of Firefox that includes all the dependencies, including glibc itself, in the executable? That way you could have 32-bit Firefox on your machine without risking of complicating your setup. But then, I suppose all 3rd parties for Firefox do link against glic.... daoh!
Actually, Dead Rising's cutscenes are in realtime, so movie playback is not a factor here. Apparently, the PS3 drive can move the same amount of data as the 360 per second off a disk. It spins slower but has higher data density, so they are about the same.
You were half right tough because if you are playing cutscenes in 1080P, you might want to have higher resolution textures than 720P games since you are rendering at higher resolution. But I don't think companies will create 1080p textures when they make their games, they'll concentrate to make 720P-good-looking textures. So it won't be any faster on the PS3 or 360.
Actually, if you are still under warranty, Nintendo pays for shipping both ways. They send you an empty box, you put the console in (just the console, no wires, controllers , anything). You send it, and two weeks later (that was how long it took them to fix my DS, TWICE) you get your unit back. With GBAs, you could also have them send you a refurbished unit. You put your defective unit in the box that it came in and ship it back with their pre-postaged stamp and you are done. Your unit will be repaired and will be sent as a refurbished unit to someone else.
The blue hand men were never explained. And there was also some corporation who has ads all over the place in the show that's never explained, something like the Blue Sun IIRC.
The price of the engine is irrelevant. Once a third-party licenses the Unreal Engine 3, they can make a game exactly like GoW if they want to. And it's going to cost them 10 million if they manage their team as well as Epic.
Well, it wouldn't be too usefull I think to have to wiggle the remote to turn the unit on. That means that when I do some cleaning and need to move the remotes, I would accidentally turn the unit on. It would be a nice way for the console to know if it should pause the game tough : if the remote is not moving at all, the game could pause automatically and the console would dim the display (kinda like the 360 does when it can't detect controllers). Heck, it could even go in sleep mode.:)

not because it might be a pubic nuisance or a danger to kids
Does the game come with a STD or what?

But can't get anywhere else content doesn't have to be 3D, does it? As long as it is exclusive, who cares?

Is that a mail-in rebate or a coupon you have to use at the store?

I think he meant stop doing pre-rendered cut scenes.
Acutally... they did it 20 years or so ago. It was named Final Fantasy 1. :)
