  1. Learn how to type! on Blank Keyboard · · Score: 1

Here's a tip that will save you about 80 bucks; learn how to type! Part of actually learning to type is touch-typing, which requires not looking at the keyboard.

  2. Re:X-Wing/TIE Fighter best SW games I've played on The Chewbacca Awards · · Score: 1

I agree with you about Tie Fighter. For the time it came out it was a very engaging, fun game to play. Also, I agree with your sig...Linux as your desktop is like having a cat for loyalty...I know...

  3. G4 stinks on Something Awful on G4TV · · Score: 1

There isn't much they show that's worth a crap. X-Play is OK, so is Icons. But Cheat with Kristin Holt is pure trash. Apparently at G4 they think that all they have to do is put a good looking female (she's not even that) in front of the camera reading off cue cards and every 20-something male will get all excited and want to tune in. Wrong! She's absolutely incompetent. Attack of the Show!?!! Is this supposed to be humourous?????? Whip Set???? The cars you want and the girls you can't have....crap crap crap

  5. You have to ask? on Parenting and a Career in Coding? · · Score: 1

Who decides what gets posted here anyways? This is silly...I've been a programmer for 20+ years and have 2 kids. Like *anything* you allow to dominate your time, programming will only shortchange your family if you allow it to. Asking a bunch of total strangers the answer to a common sense question seems a bit silly to me.

  7. Re:And praying? on Meditation in the Workplace? · · Score: 0

Sounds like you need someone to pray for you. I once thought like you do. You'll never find peace with that kind of sinful outlook. You may have had a bad experience with church and religion, but don't ever say that Jesus is a figment of the imagination. He's real. And if we are weak minded sheep, then so are you, and you should follow the one true Shepherd.

  8. Company promoted spirituality? on Meditation in the Workplace? · · Score: 2, Informative

How can this be truly effective? Does anyone else see this as a crock and completely misguided? You want true peace? Turn your heart to Christ Jesus, get involved in a church, read your Bible every day, learn to walk in His will. That'll do it.

  9. Anybody ever hear of Graphics Server? on Drawing Graphs on Your Browser? · · Score: 1

I rolled by own active-x dll using Graphics Server 6 to produce jpegs, the image map, and all the supporting html. Upside, Graphics Server is a very robust graphing tool; downside, still has some issues with concurrency. Plus; no client side components needed.

Loved Quake, got *very* obsessed with it. Original Quake multiplayer just flat out rocked. Single player was easy to master, even on nightmare.

  12. Hang in there folks on Unemployed? How Long Until You Find That Next Job · · Score: 1

I just want to offer some encouragement to my fellow IT brothers who are unemployed. I've been fortunate in that (so far) I am working, although I am doing things I'd rather not do just for the sake of a paycheck. I look and see extremely qualified people laid off for very long periods of time, and I know it must be extremely discouraging. Some resourceful folks are taking advantage of the time to better themselves and that is wonderful. Have faith in God, faith in your abilities and keep on plugging away.

It's quite obvious where Id's market lies...not with Microsoft products...I don't think this posting was necessary on Slashdot, it insults the reader's intelligence.

  14. Re:I don't think most of you are engineers on Are Programmers Engineers? · · Score: 1

I think I'd have to agree with you. I've been a programmer, aka code-monkey for over 19 years now. I even held the title System Engineer while working for EDS, the title didn't make me any more of an engineer than I am now. Now I'm a senior consultant working at THE biggest brewery in the US, and what do I do? Hack this, hack that, hurry up, get this out the door. The customer changed his mind again, quick change, hurry up..not much science or discipline to what I do, but it's a job.

  19. Wildly inaccurate on Realistic Portrayals of Software Programmers? · · Score: 1

I have yet to see a movie that accurately portrayed programmers. Most of us are human, generally don't sit down to a keyboard and immediately (and very rapidly) hack up a masterpiece of code or fall asleep at the keyboard after an all night hacking binge. Most of us who are married also have a life outside computers (ie. wife, kids, house, etc etc etc). On the one hand, it's nice to see it viewed as "cool" and "glamorous", but on the other hand, get real....most insulting are the tech school ads on tv....Hi my name is so and so and I'm in charge of DSL installation....big whoop!

  20. I agree with you on What Makes Great Science Fiction? · · Score: 1

I've read sci-fi that bored me to tears. Flat characters, a lose plot that seems to drift aimlessly and an unsatisfying conclusion. I'm learning what good sci-fi is, along with crossing into new territory by reading horror. The best authors to date; Dan Simmons, and Stephen King. I've read many others that I've enjoyed; Arthur C. Clarke, Orson Scott Card, Frank Herbert. I've also read some that are considered genius and didn't click with them; Asimov, Niven. It's all a matter of personal taste, but I agree that without good characters, good plot, and good narative you've got a pretty boring story no matter what the genre.
