Certainly mine supports built in compression for recording, but will also record lossless for those times when I really don't care about carrying 2 discs instead of one (come on, they're hardly bricks;))
So, you have people trading crappy live recordings made through sub-standard microphones, placed 100 yards away from the performers, that picked up the sound from so-so PA speakers and fed a consumer-grade portable recorder
And what about the ones who have permission to plug a line feed into an MD recorder direct from the desk?
I think they could require lossless recording, especially if the intention is then to encode it into lossy formats.
Check the copyright statement, it explicitly denies you the right to broadcast it to everyone in the building, or broadcast it in any way (hell... you're not even allowed to watch it with your friends if you happen to work on an oil rig.)
I think the subject says it all... wouldn't a more reliable source to ask be the organisation that made the change, rather than the population of/., who'll all have a different opinion on what's happened?
Except if you have a contract (hint: you do) it probably says that if you call in sick, they're entitled to require a doctor's note saying that you were really ill.
I've actually seen this one happen, when my girlfriends company refused any holiday time over Christmas/New Year that hadn't been booked already (several months before hand).
Shortly before the period started, they made it perfectly clear that anyone calling in sick *would* be required to return holding a letter from their doctor.
Or even better, a second monitor - I use Xinerama under Linux, and it's the best thing since sliced bread (possibly even better, since I don't like bread much).
I usually have whatever work I'm doing on the main monitor, and assorted crap (right now I have XMMS, GAIM, and a terminal open) on the other one.
When I'm coding I'll have the preview of whatever page I'm developing on the smaller monitor, and the source on the other one, or maybe some API docs - it saves the endless Alt-Tabbing of a single monitor box.
Only if you tell them to.
;))

If you live 2 minute's drive away, please tell me that you walk instead!
I walk into work everyday, and regularly beat people in who drive from more or less the same place, leaving at the same time.

They did.

It's just that it was a game involving placing cards on top of each other in alternate colours, and in declining orders of the numbers on them.
But it was Duke Nukem 3, because that makes them look more advanced, and will get coverage on
My guess is that if you want to make money from software, distributing it would be a good start.
Unless you plan to charge your employees for the software they use to do their work, but I've heard that most people won't go for that one.

The address doesn't work.
I just get a bunch of stuff about buying domains.
Actually from memory, last time it got mentioned it survived a /.ing... it was *slow*, but it was still serving up pages.
"Argh matey! Lets bury those seal skins... no point trying to sell them!"
You should get your medication upped - your obviously suffering from your delusional periods again.
Hmmm... I tend to drink my coffee in a mug.
;)
I've always been a strange child though

Huh?
;)
Spending time writing software to troll people without having to put any effort into it *doesn't make you a loser*?
Looks like I'm in the wrong career
My god.
You actually *paid* for the privelidge of being the idiot who FPs an article?
You really need to get out more (says the person who's been visiting every five minutes to see this story come out of the future).
Hmmmm... that link (Ants) looks like it could be interesting.

Relevent, and interesting, but not funny.
Have you tried that one?
You'll read through all the comments before the next batch appear.
Believe me, I work sys-admin on a network that seems to run itself most of the time.

You missed out the other have of the sentence, let me help you out here... ... overtime does you?
Hmmm... I guess I know why they only did half the sentence now - ideas for a non-crap sounding Soviet Russia joke on the back of a postcard.
Or maybe you could hit the reply button.
Well I was using LVM for about an hour or so, but I decided to go for RAID-0 instead ;)
Mmmm... tasty striping.
I do indeed hate being stuck with the system everyone else I know uses.

My preference would be for everyone to be using Jabber, but sadly everyone I know (and the blog system I use

"British" cuisine... it doesn't exist.
It's just a mix of other country's cuisine, with the odd bit of clotted pig's blood in the mix.
(And I live here)
It's tiny place with it's own TLD, and they couldn't give their official radio station a .va address?
