This is happening to 50% of the new releases. Probably higher for big-name titles. I completely made up that statistic btw, but isn't it just about common now to view a release date as only a suggestion?
I was going to comment on the $3 billion number as well. Where did they get this from? Are they basically counting all of the illegal copies and multiplying that by what the industry would've made? I only ask, because in my case, when in the past I modded my ps1 and xbox and yes I even copied games from friends and downloaded and burned them out. But the majority of those I would never have bought. In fact the only reason I bought a ps1 was because I could copy games, I never would've bought the console if I couldn't.
So, I mean I realize what I did then was illegal and I'm not trying to justify that by making excuses, but I'm guessing that 3 billion is a bit exaggerated. Just because you find 100 burned copies of My Pretty Ponies in some modders' basement, doesn't mean they would've lost 100 sales had he not been caught.
I was commenting on the OP's comment "Sony said previously they weren't interested in paying for exclusives...". If you'd like to find someone to argue with about the definition of lying in regards to Sony's price cut, you'll have to look elsewhere. Sorry, we're all out of crazy.

I remember when vid'o games only cost a quarter! And you could play as long as you could stay alive. And these were in, what we called then, Arcades. Had to walk a mile to get there just for the honor of playing. None of this sittin' on your couch bullcrap! We'd walk it and we were happy to walk it! Up hill, both ways! Which weren't so bad if it hadn't been for those snow drifts. Bigger than your head boy! But we did it, and we liked it.
Now its all-day with the online, and the webernet. Talking with people who aren't even in the room?! You tell me if that makes sense? Kids these days... with their wireless and their def-hi. Get off my lawn!

I agree. If they set it up in this fashion, so that I can still eventually get the free demo, it wouldn't bother me so much. I'm not such a hardcore gamer that i need the demo right when it comes out.
Otherwise, I'm like a lot of the other posters. I'm not going to pay microsoft or the developer money for the honor of playing whats basically an advertisement and possibly a QA test.
Since most of these HD-DVD / Blu-Ray topics as of late are all flamewars akin to ps3 vs. 360. I thought I'd jump in and try to add some reason.
I bought the 360 hddvd add-on because I wanted to see what some of these movies were like in 720p (I don't own a 1080p tv). I found a great deal on craigslist and that was really the only reason I bought one. The movies look fantastic; much better than upconverted dvds, and noticeably better than movies on HD channels over Dish Network (from the compression I assume). In addition to the higher quality the way the menu works while watching a dvd is much friendlier (something that always annoyed me about dvds) and they have a new way of presenting some of the extras. NetFlix rents both hd-dvds and Blu-Rays now, so for that and the $100 or so i paid for it, it was a decent buy.
Obviously there are downsides. I hate playing it through the 360. The fans are noisy (not initially but eventually) and the start-up is a mild annoyance. I don't want to speak out of turn, but I assume I'd have the same problems playing blu-rays through the ps3. Theres just nothing as convenient as a stand-alone player... but theres something to be said for saving $300 when buying into unproven technology.
There are no "winners/losers" here yet, anyone claiming so is a fan-boi or uninformed. There are still some great movies you can only get on HD-DVD (and vice-versa with Blu-Ray) so people who are fans of those will still gravitate towards their respective studios and what format that studio supports.
Now with hybrid players appearing I wouldn't be surprised if we see a dual format thats basically invisible to the consumer. In 10 years (or whatever, i'm making an example) the majority of people will own a hybrid player, you'd head to BB or CC and pick up the latest release not even really paying attention to whether it has a Red case or a Blue case.
Not really sure where I'm going with this. Heh. I'd say if you own a 360, a hd tv and you're into the hd craze. Its only a couple of hundred dollars, its been fun for me and I've probably gotten that much enjoyment out of it. If you don't have an hd-tv, you don't really care about the hd craziness thats been going on, or you don't have $200 to blow on tech that you'll throw away in a few years, I wouldn't even worry about it. You're missing out on a few lines of resolution but nothing you should kick yourself over.

I made a MAME cabinet a few years ago and I enjoyed it while I had it. The one recommendation I'd pass along to others is go ahead and splurge and get the nicest wood you can. I went cheap cheap cheap; bought the roughest, cheapest pieces of crap wood I could get. I never got over that disappointment. That and instead of dropping another $30 on paint, I used the glossy black paint we had lying around. Another big mistake, but cez la vie.
I never figured out why people are masochistic enough to play FPSes with dual-analog controllers (i.e on consoles).
I totally agree.
I never figured out why people are masochistic enough to play anything without the beauty of widescreen, a large (32"+) screen and a hd signal. Oh wait... maybe its a personal preference?
I bought the HD-DVD add-on for the 360, because I got a very good deal on a used one from Craigslist. I was extremely excited. I watched a few movies, rented a few from Netflix and was just extremely happy with my purchase (as I assume i would've been had i bought a blu-ray player). THEN I started buying them... as you said at $30 a pop. That was something i did not really count on. I mean, I knew what they cost obviously... I just wasn't considering it.
So now I sit on my couch and look at my 6 hd-dvd movies for a total of $180 or so and... its hard not to regret the purchase a bit.
I wish i would've just stuck to renting them from Netflix.
Just wanted to clarify that I didn't change the original poster's word "claimed" because thats exactly what it was. A report of information claimed by three separate countries intelligence agencies. Definitely possibly that the three countries were in cahoots, or that they all used the same source, or maybe that they were all just flat out wrong.
And the unfortunate part is that since all we, the public, get is filtered through the bias of the media (biased in both directions mind you) we really have nothing to go on. The media told me the three intelligence agencies were in agreement... but who knows where they got that from, or who knows what they did with the real information before it got to us. There are so many layers where information can be corrupted and changed who knows what we are actually reading.
Oh, I think theres an answer to that. Simply that the majority of those who do watch Fox News are more likely to defend the administration whether the argument is based in truth or not.
I think a good validation of that argument would be your statistic that PBS and NPR percentages are lower because they are listened/watched by a more intelligent section of Americans and thus know that nothing was found.
I actually do think its interesting that anyone at all believes that WMDs were found. Obviously those who are uninformed and don't read the news might, I don't know, for some reason still hold on to that. But I'd think that anyone who has been paying attention to the news would realize that hey nothing has been found. Nothing on that scale at least.
My memory may be faulty and I can't be bothered to search for a citation, but didn't it come out before the war started that all of those intelligence agencies were basing their information on a single, discredited source?
Yeah, I'm not sure either but I have a similar memory. I mean the point that proves they were wrong the most is simply that nothing has been found in Iraq. I definitely wasn't trying to say that they were right... only that several of the world's intelligence agencies believed the same thing.
This is what some of us would really love to see explained by you "nothing to see here" apologists.
You want someone to explain to you why 19-23% of Americans think WMD were found in Iraq? I'm not sure you'll ever get an answer for that. And if you did it would not be satisfying to you, as I'm sure the answer is either the age old adage "Americans are stupid." or "The media is corrupt."
Anyone looking just at the inspectors' reports would not believe that Saddam had "stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction" as was claimed by [the MI5, the Mossad, and the CIA].
Just to be accurate as possible I've updated that sentence for you.
I would say that sliding in a dollar, realizing wow I can cash out for $10, and then repeating that same action umpteen times without actually using the slot machine would also qualify as intent.
Really? A 25g game? I did not know that. Cool...

mod chips...illegal assault weapons, drugs, pedophiles, and carjackers next door
Jesus... what the hell is going on in your neighborhood?!
Heh, no clue. It just felt like his tone came through his post and I laughed, so I figured I'd give him some feedback.
niiiiiiceee....
God help me I laughed out loud at that. Bravo sir... bravo.
