  2. Vengeance on The Worst Jobs in Science · · Score: 2, Interesting

It's so interesting how people long for vengeance... It really does seem to be quite a common human desire. I myself often desire vengeance against those I feel have wronged me.

Is it always advantageous, though? Does ass rape of prisoners really make them less likely to commit crimes in the future? Maybe, it makes them think I don't want to go back to prison again. Maybe it just makes them really fucking pissed off and crazy. A lot of research suggests that those who are victims of sexual abuse become abusers.

In any case, as a society, the most important goal of our punitary system is to prevent crime and especially to prevent serious crime. Now, prison rape is a crime and it is being ignored. Even if you think that we should only be protecting the innocent, we have to ask ourselves if it is really so great that we have the largest prison population in the world? Not all of the people in prison are career criminals. Some were just in a tight spot and needed a fast buck. Others are drug users. Others are even innocent of anything, but one thing is true of all of them. They are all in contact with brutal, violent criminals on a daily basis. Most will have problems finding a job when the are released. Many will have learned a lot about being a criminal in prison.

My point is this: vengeance is not necessarily helpful. People in prison should be learning some job skills other than being criminals, 'cause if they don't then they're going to be criminals when they get out. Ass Rape is probably not helpful either. I can't imagine that that experience would help make prisoners more calm productive members of society. If anyone can explain how it would, please do.

I didn't say TOO much when they censored broadcasts. I didn't get TOO upset when they changed the rules regarding station ownership, but this goes way too fucking far.

The FCC should come down IN FLAMES. It has proven time and again that it cares not for the consumer. It cares not for civil rights. It is quite simply the embodiment of fascism right in the US government (along with several other things).

Michael Powell, in particular, has proven that he is one of the most evil human being on the face of the Earth.

What can we do to rid our country of this cancer on our country known as the FCC? What can we do to make sure that Powell is expelled from the country?

This is a difficult problem. The FCC is not susceptible to public pressure, and it has proven that it doesn't actually care about the American people. There must be solution, though, to this terrible problem. If we all put our heads together, I'm sure we'll find it.

The RIAA can't track down the users of freenet or various other anonymous P2P networks. Too bad! You're shit out of luck!

Well, if people were fairly represented, then campaign finance reform would happen and businesses wouldn't be able to bribe our elected officials. Anyway, I started thinking, why doesn't the US do this? We have a $4.5 * 10^11 deficit; M$ liscense payments can't help that. Well, there are many reasons the US gub'ment doesn't go Open Source, but foremost is a powerful lobby. I have an in with a democratic presidential candidate (I won't say who).

I plan on writing up something as to what's wrong with IP law, especially the DMCA. I'd also like to include a rough proposal for U.S. government adoption of OSS.

Does anyone know of any numbers as to much the government would save by doing this? I couldn't begin to estimate how many Windows boxes the federal government runs or what the pay for the liscenses (surely not full price?). Any help would be appreciated.
