I think the major problem is that the IBM code was also GPL'd.
Now, would he be respondsible for contacting his lawyer about enforcing the GPL, or does he no longer own the code (because of the agreement) and it would fall on IBM's lawyer's shoulders?
Not to mention that any non-Japanese company can't own more than 49% of any Japanese company. Although, this doesn't cover Nintendo selling off their NA division. What good would that do, though? All their games are made in Japan, and translated here.
Not to mention the rumble feature has been linked to carpel tunnel, but that might just be because kids can play video games for 85 hours a week.
I can't even play for more than an hour without getting up and doing something, and I'm not exactly going to be on the cover of men's Fitness anytime soon.
It costs an awful lot to launch the Shuttle. I don't really follow Hubble's status, but I think they just want to fix a gyroscope or something. Then add a few things on and refill it's tanks. I think it'll go until 2010 right now, and it's booked solid by scientists.
We have Hubble now though, and there really isn't anything wrong with it. A new space telescope would take years to design, build, and then launch. There is one in the works, but it doesn't catch the visible light spectrum as well as Hubble can. It's for different purposes. Plus I'm pretty sure they both costed more than a billion.
Excuse me, but you own freedom to the french and democracy to the greek.
That doesn't mean they're not American values. It also doesn't mean we owe the French anything, it wasn't a exactly selfless act.
I also like how your pointed out that our government followed the Greek's example, then the French followed ours. The French have done plenty for us in the past, and we have done plenty for them. Stop saying one side owes the other, because they don't. Our countries are like close friends, no one keeps score of favors.
I think that the game ratings are more than adequate. They're very discriptive and easy to understand. Almost everything that could offend someone in the game is cleaerly marked on the box. With the MPAA ratings, the rating is hidden on the back of the box in really small print. Same goes for their television ads, you have to be watching really closely to catch the rating. It's only flashed for a few seconds. Even then, the rating gives no indication of what does the movie contain that warrented an "R" rating. That can range from someone saying Fuck more than once to a 10 person softcore orgy.
Often, movies are released as "Unrated" so the full uncut version can sold. When they'd normally be given the NC-17 rating, which was formally X. I've yet to see a single videogame since the ESRB was started that was unrated. Both systems are volluntary, yet the ESRB is being scrutinized? Even the TV ratings are more vague than the ESRB. Who the hell is going to know what the TVM-NVSLSS means? With the ESRB, you can just flip the box over and read the extended rating. It'll completely explain that it means Nudity, Violence, Strong Language, and Sexual Situations.
I understand that Ham has valid uses which will be effectivly killed by BPL, but BPL could very well be the solution to the last mile problem. Which is why the FCC & Powell approved a few test setups to see if it really is the solution.
I can't really think of any parallels to this situation; where one technology is shut down in favor of another. The closest I can come to is HDTV, but the switch over hasn't happened yet.
I guess I'm a little biased too, I live 4 miles just outside of a Michigan town (~4,000 residents) and I'm forced to use dialup. I've talked to the cable company several times a year over the past 7 years about getting Cable TV/Internet out here and they just keep replying with "We currently have no plans to expand our service into your area." I even got a quote once for the cost of running the lines. $100 for every 10 feet. The closest run ends 9/10ths of a mile away. That brings the total to $47,520 I'd have to pay. Ha. My only hope is fixed wireless, but right now no one offers it. (There is a company offering that proprietary 3COM setup in Grand Rapids, but they don't cover my area.)
I've been toying with the idea of starting my own up, but I really have no clue what'd I'd be getting into. How much would one of the towers cost anyway? (For WiMax)
I agree, he has done alot of great things. Personally, I'd prefer he stayed rather than possibily having someone much worse. Apart from the broadcast flag (which isn't all that unreasonable) and the finings, I think he has an almost spotless record. Anyone (Well, polititions) in his position would of dealt out a good deal of fines with the pressure the FCC recieved. Even if 99.8% of all complaints came from a single advocacy group.
Of course, the ham radio nerds will always hate him. Seriously, sometimes the old has to be sacrificed for the new.
I'd say the replacement will be just as bad (or good, if you're into VoIP). Powell was appointed by Bush on Bush's 3rd day as president, although Powell did expand the chairman's power to levy fines. Much like Truman expanding the President's ability to wage war; it's going to set a (dangerous?) precident.
Do you have flashlights in your house? Do you routinely practice with them just in case the power goes out? If the power hasn't gone out in monthes, are you going to get rid of them?
Yeah, because you know all those bastards using their high speed internet connections right next door is preventing you from contacting the civilized world.
This would be one of the times when BPL would probably be either out or turned off.
A large portion of the US still doesn't have access to broadband at all, and it's not only confined to extreme rural areas. Hell, I live 15 miles from Lansing, Michigan and I can't get anything faster than 26,000bps dialup. It's not like we're the only house for miles either, the cable company just refuses to string out the lines another 8/10ths of a mile because of the cost. That extra mile would cover atleast 90-100 homes, most who are fed up with DirecTV.
Wasn't it just a few monthes ago when CmdrTaco posted an Ask Slashdot about him finally getting broadband? If I remember correctly, he lives only a few miles outside of Ann Arbor, MI, and he was inquiring about satilite and it's support of his Mac. Satilite is hardly an answer, it's extremely overpriced and slower than any other broadband solutions. I've looked at a few places and most places offer it for $45-$60/month with anywhere from $400-$600 in equipment and setup fees, and that's for only 400Kbps on the high end with a second of lag. Not to mention you have to sign a 2 year contract.
The proposed change specifies that recorded calls would be allowed only when an "established business relationship" exists, but provisions like that tend to be stretched to absurdity.
Hey...it worked with CAN-SPAM, right?.....Right? Who here can truely say that CAN-SPAM hasn't stopped all spam from reaching their inbox?! I give this provision the thumbs up!

It'd also go a long way to help the WINE project.

Lol....post traumatic stress! In ten years there will be a goatse-survivors support group.

I applaud you for figuring that out. I started to when I first posted my reply, but quickly realized I didn't really care enough. :)
The way they wrote it it makes me think it's increasing. Acceleration is measured in distance/timeunit/timeunit.

I considered it could be a joke, but you never know.

What the fuck is an "F-Bomb"?????
When someone says Fuck on the air.

It looks like the Apple site has been updated aswell. With Nerd Porn (Pictures)!
Mac Mini & iPod Shuffle.
Damn you Apple, just when I convinced myself I didn't have enough money to buy a Mac.
It's still Beta, and Microsoft has been offering it up for download for awhile now. The article even points you to the download page.

The United Nations passed a law/treaty/whatever saying that whichever country you launch in, you need their permission.
Before the merger that killed everything good about TechTV; Fresh Gear covered this. Anyone want to find a link? (Is there even a link to find?)
Does anyone else think that Mike naming his son Gabe, after a slightly deranged lunatic, is really really creapy?
I don't want to draw any parrells, but would you name your child Osama?
