    Surely they have documentation or can reverse engineer stuff. And if no one makes 512k, then use a damn higher specced part. So that 32meg chip is .05% worse, but run it in raid64 mode with 63 redudency levels for gods sake. Its like saying, oh its too hard. Bull shit it is. Just VM it if you dont have the hardware. The shuttle isnt going to Jupiter, we already have other space hardware with higher specs flying.

    They just wont do it because theres no ROI in it, and no bean counter will say, "ok do your techy magic and create something 'thesame' but is new" .

    I cant imagine why no one could trust a modern cpu cut into say 32 cores, and runs the same code 32 times in vm mode to emu the old hardware. You could test it 10000x faster with todays sims than in the 80s.

    Give google 8billion and they could do it.

    I got a cheapy MB by gigabyte that cost no more than a case of good beer $49, and a E1200 cpu , together with a Nvidia 9600 and 3gig ram ddr2-800, new games still run well, and it was cheap, cheaper than a Wii.

    Anyones price cap should be PS3 price, else just get a ps3.

    Go for the cheapest CPU, and upgrade in 6months to something twice as fast.

    The could have made it smaller, with laptop HD, and external PSU. Still sold millions to cheaper markets and poorer people and still sold tonnes of great games and made it work with the new wireless controller too.

    So they didnt like nvidia, but they could have worked out a long term deal,not just cut and run.

    I guess never again will nvidia make deals with MS.

    In terms of OIL, 2gig ram costs about 1/3 a barrel.

    Its still cheap, theres no excuse to not get more ram.

    Any thing below 1.6ghz is in my draw, not worth running, except for a low power file server/webserver.

    Whats the price of intels cheapest core2s? $40? thats going to break the bank.

    But its funny how Chrome just feels INSTANT, yet FF feels fast, but not snappy. Oh and give us smarter image caching with priorities that let us choose which websites or file sizes to store longer, and flush larger, less used sites quicker.

    Any FREE ram is really wasted ram. It needs to be used by cache.

    Regarding blocking flash/JS, use 3rd party mini proxys that can 'regexp' the html in real time to your hearts content.

    hmm so from Yr1 to Yr 12, $20000 py, is $240,000 as a rough rough guess, probly goes up 10% yearly because schools dont hire competent accountants.

    Id rather send my kids to a cheap average school, spend a bit more on tutors twice a month. Save the rest in a good fund account, and give them the $240,000 when they turn 18. Thats a better start than $500k in debt to the family.

    Besides im sure google will give better education in a few years with a virtual google teacher in 3d. Face it... computers can do better. Add a 3d avatar teacher with attitude and proper scoring, and fairness with monetary awards, it will scaled better than $80000 teachers which do mostly nothing more than hand out pieces of paper, and talk and write stuff on a board, all things a computer can do.

    If MS thinks their WGA and security is so good, why dont they release a new XP ISO every 3 months with all the patches included. Why do we have to do our own slipstream iso? 80 billion dollars doesnt buy you brains, just more hookers and cocaine and stupid people.

    Doing automatic update, download and do not install is enough. It still gets all the updates, even after telling it to never download the WGA one.

    I dont know why MS cares re XP, if they want Vista to be popular, just remove all the WGA/Serials and be done with it. How many more billions do they need to cover their xbox losses?

    Most of any app doesnt need the speed, but sometimes there are small components that need the speed, that if written in java/c# would be 10-50x slower due to less reductions in memory movement.

    Given that, it still possible to make slow C code, just look at windows and how sometimes icons take forever to refresh from empty blobs to images on the desktop. (poor design).

    For enterprise style apps, that need to scale and handle billions of objects, only C or C++ or ObjC will cut it.

    Then again... I am supprised intel wont push java/c# more, because that will increase demand for faster CPUs.

    They could have made a 3g one 12 months ago, even if it was a dev only , twice the weight, half the battery life version just for apple/dev staff and jobs to hash out all the bugs/errors.

    Projects too closed and secret have too few testing done.

    Jobs, your secret dev attitude worked in simple 80s, but now you have to just give it up, let the world know you're making something.

    Even i knew that apple would make an iphone 18 months before hand, it was the only option since mp3 players were going down to $1 profits. I can buy a 1gig player for $5 - crap quality yes, but still any 4yo would be happy with it.

    Sure [] is more cryptic, but more people knew what it meant, so why reinvent a definition. Even pascal was ok.

    A cmd line interpreted javascript, could be well useful as perl or more so.

    Is there a cmd line js 'vm' ? Technically perl is a vm.

    1. look at php vs perl sample code/docs in their respective sites. Php not only looks better, but has more info, yet perl as usual is too minimalistic in both its english texts and its code samples and combination samples. Even MSDN docs are better put together.

    2. I am being picky here but even the colors chosen on those websites is so minimal it reminds me of 1996 websites. Are perl programmers so cheap they only still use 8bit desktops on 28k modems? Put some more bulk in the content.

    OT - I think personally the whole concept of IDEs should be taken to the next level, to the photoshop scale. Why do we still work with "files" and "functions". We need no 'files' concept but have classes/functions in one 'application'. The ide can hide it all even if it has to self create auto filenames or keep it in one giant .zip with one function per 'file'.

    Todays programs are more complex than 3 source files and a makefile. Why waste time managing a file structure, lets abstract it and let the IDE do it. We are past the vi days.
