  1. It's peoples' own money on EU Commissioner Slams Music Lock-In · · Score: 1

Now, I'm more liberal than the majority of the population here in the United States, and I'd guess I'm probably more in the line of France and western Germany, but honestly, let the people choose what they want to buy. If they want to buy something that's less than 1/10th the quality of a CD, let them. They're basically over-paying for each song by around 100% anyway, since for the argument's sake, an average CD will consist of 10 songs, and the bitrate of the files they are downloading are less than 10% of a CD's bitrate. So, they're paying $1 for $0.1 worth of music. I'd say that's the biggest rip-off. The only thing I can see anyone slamming Apple for would be if they marketed any form of lossy media (And yes, an m4a or aac file encoded at 320kb/s is still lossy) as "CD-Quality" or something along those lines, then they could be in trouble for false-advertising.

That's like saying 3 weeks and 5 years are the same length of time. This was done to avoid paying taxes...except that it is tax money which is paying both salaries.

What's your point? It's money management. It's like saying "Putting your money into a ROTH IRA is unethical" when you're predicting that when you begin to draw money out of the account that you'll be in a higher tax bracket than you currently are. The whole thing that's appealing about options is that you don't have to execute them right away, and that you can wait until either (A) you need the money, (B) you think, without resorting to insider information, that the price is the highest it's going to be for a while, or (C) you figure a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, and that you have no idea what the stock will do, but there's a nice money market account that you can store it in until you find a more worth-while investment.

If you want to exercise options right when you get them instead of holding on to them until their value (hopefully) increases, go ahead. Meanwhile, I'm going to do what anyone with half a brain and some basic financial planning knowledge does and wait until I can maximize my returns on the options. It's like being given a Series EE savings bond and cashing it now for half the value, when you might as well hold onto it for 30 years and sell it on its 30th birthday.

I don't remember the exact numbers but at the time they went public they spent roughly ~$100 of advertising per customer sign-up.

It's incredibly rare for a startup company to have profits in the first few (up to 7-10) years, including at and right after an IPO. The only time that shareholders can expect the company to have profits right after an IPO is if the company was private beforehand and is a more matured company.

one thing that Linux needs to do is develop some features that aren't available anywhere else that makes people demand it on the desktop

Let's make a list of things that it already has/supports, and see what's marketable. Odds are I'm going to get modded 'troll' or 'redundant', but hell, I have plenty of Karma left:

More supported filesystems - This doesn't sound big, but speed, reliability, and security are huge. Just remember that this was one of the original selling points for Vista, except we're already delivering
Legacy (hardware) support - Granted, I don't think this is terribly important, since the only thing that will push Linux into being a major competitor is it being provided on new hardware via OEM.
Level of "customer" support - Sure, there aren't many phone numbers to call (which could be a problem if you can't connect to the internet), but assuming you're able to connect to the internet and need help getting scanner ABC and printer XYZ to work, you'll get support.
Multimedia support - Sure, MythTV can be a pain in the ass to install, but if a distribution cares about this enough, they'll make it as simple as two clicks; click one - select MythTV from package manager, click two - install

Things to not evangelize very much:
Lack of viruses - You can make a passing reference to this, but this gets overplayed too much
It's (perfect) for everyone - There's no such thing as a "One-Size-Fits-All". Not for Apple, Microsoft, Linux, or Amiga.
