The individuals who work at Microsoft are either ignorant, desperate or believe there should be a fascist monopoly in the operating system market.

I suppose you're going to call them prostitutes now, because they need money, and figure that they would be best off financially by working for Microsoft.
Honestly, you need to grow up. As much of an advocate of Linux as I am, MS still has its uses; otherwise it wouldn't exist. They still make a kick-ass office suite(granted, nothing's been revolutionary lately, and for the average person, they don't need much past Office 2000.) Perhaps Microsoft would be better off (quality-wise, not financially), if they phased out all of their projects other than building OS's and office suites. I really don't know how much better MS Streets is compared to Google Maps, other than you don't have to be connected to the internet to use it, and it has a database of buildings/locations other than just their addresses(which Google could do too, if they wanted.) The only thing I have against MS is that they keep buying smaller companies, then kill off competition for programs like Streets & Trips equivalents, meaning that there's nothing really evolves, other than them adding new addresses from buildings that get erected over the previous year.

So the only people they will allow to publish those benchmarks are the people they are paying to make favourable ones.
[ of course, that could be just some paranoid Slashdot meme I've picked up, but I do recall reading it numerous times. ]
That's why each of the teams is its own corporation. When MS sues them, they simply dissolve, and none of the people from the team can be sued (since it was a corporate action.) Oh the wonders of abusing businesses....

I'm guessing your card went south. My Radeon 8500 worked fine for 2 years, then the fan started grinding to a halt. When I used it under Linux, I got horizontal lines from the edges of all of my windows. Under WindowsXP, if I tried to play a DVD, I actually got the BSoD. So I emailed ATI, got a replacement card. The fan on that one was loud and wobbly, so I sent it back again. Third card, I think I shorted it because I didn't ground myself (and wore socks while walking on carpeting.) Fourth card was the charm though, and ATI even covered the expense for shipping the 3rd card back!

I work as a "student advisor" at Leeds University and every student is issued with a free license to McAfee Virusscan Enterprise.

When connecting for the first time, they have to enter their university username and password so the IP address can be tied to their MAC address and the computer logged.

If their software detects viral traffic from their PC, they're automatically cut off from the net and a webpage comes up explaining why. They don't get re-connected until myself (or one of my colleagues) verifies they have virus scanning software installed and their PC is clean.

First few weeks of term there were a lot of people cut off, but virus infections now are next to nothing because everyone has the software running.

Apart from this, the internet connection here is extremely good. Fast and reliable, and no port blocking.

I really hope that the software isn't required to be running to have access to the internet, because otherwise it would be screwing Linux users over big time.

...Significantly, too. Granted, not on the desktop, but in the server arena. And granted, not to the same extent that it's dented Unix. But the mere fact that MS decided to create a campaign (very political-like too, all built on lies & half-truths) to create FUD, just goes to show that Linux is denting Windows. Will it ever replace Windows? No, just like how MS hasn't replaced Apple (they still have their loyal fanbase, and as Apple is the new trend-setter, they'll be around for quite a while.) So, long story short: It's going to be a 3 type arena for a long time: Windows*, Mac*, and Linux*.

The way I see it right now, the only way Linux could severely dent MS's desktop percentage is if Dell and other giant companies that build computers for idiots start providing Linux as OEM, and not to hide it. I know Dell provides Linux pre-installed on a few workstations, but they go out of their way to hide them. And even then, they only provide RedHat. The average computer user isn't a gamer: it's the gamer's parents and grandparents. That, and school kids that download everything they see off of KaZaA, thus promoting the viral population.
