Yes, I was:) For the record, the "royal you" means not you specifically but all of "us". BS meant bullshit. Just clearing it up in case any of our non-native english speaking readers have an issue trying to identify that acronym.

At any rate, I completely agree with you that a non-trivial amount of reboots are directly related to bad drivers, bad software, funky hardware or a good combination of them. No argument there. I do, however, disagree that the OSs in question are stable once hardware, software and drivers are controlled for.

To illustrate my point, I did this google query:

    site:support.microsoft.com workaround reboot

And of the responses I got in the first few pages (of 7,480 total), I got the following links:

    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315753
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838691/en-us?spid= 1444&sid=232
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916279

    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=842397
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837869/en-us?spid= 6790&sid=global
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812175/
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322175/

Every single one of those is a WinXP,2k or 2k3. (The third one is Wince, which affects me directly, having to reboot to get my bluetooth working all of the time).

Every single one of these has something to do, directly, with the OS or other MS software (One is MS games, another is MS IE5.01).

All of them have the single workaround of "reboot".

I found "Host Name Resolution Does Not Work After One Year When You Use a Hosts File" especially entertaining. It seems like MS would have to code something like that on purpose to introduce that bug. The hosts file just doesn't work anymore after 365 days.

So, you can argue all you want that you don't personally need to reboot your machines, but that doesn't make up for the fact that Windows has lots of bugs which prevent uptime in general.

So you've been given the task of making lectures available to students. As if you're their dictator, you're worried about some of them watching them because they couldn't make it to class for some reason, despite them having paid for the class. What's the scoop? Why are you so worried about _them_? They're paying for it, right? There will be less people in the classroom if your dreaded scenario took place, and that's normally good, right? It's their responsibility to pass, right? So why do care whether they're there or not? Is it some gross way of telling yourself you have power?

The fact is, the lecture should be available at anytime, whether they were present for it or not. When I go to class, I often find myself distracted (By something that went on earlier, the car that almost hit me on the way there, the blonde to my left that's not wearing a bra, the sound of the failing ballast in the flourescent light, etc) and often not able to take very accurate notes. Most of the notes are good, but I often wish I could recall what the teacher said about X, or Y, or what she said in between A and B. A digital format would always be more beneficial than harmful, IMHO, especially if I have a bested interest in the subject.

Or maybe you'll allot a 2hr time period to every service call. That way, techs that got done in 10 minutes have a 210 minute window for downtime. In which case they can drive back to your office with mileage being low on a truck, and gas being $3/gallon. Or maybe he can just take a break, you still pay him though.
