  3. It happened to me. on New US $20 bills Released, Colors & Layout Change · · Score: 4, Interesting

I was in a coffee shop about 3 am one Saturday when this kid tried to pay for his coffee with a fake ten (This is in Canada, the land where Moose rule).

The fake was easy to spot, printed on smooth paper on a colour ink jet printer - what made me laugh was some of it had got wet and the ink had run...

We called the cops and the kid disappeared.

When NS is on a roll, he's in the same league with Mark Twain, and that's saying something.

Example - his chapter in Crypto regarding the Vickers gun and the huge buzz saw.

HOWEVER - his endings blow, and some plot threads don't stand up.

Example - Diamond Age where the engineer writes/creates the computer book to train little girls. Where'd HE get the writing power to do that? Also, political correctness is evident, where's the book to train little boys?

  5. The reason Bill's upset about this is on Xbox Hacking Book Prepares to Fly Off Shelves · · Score: 2, Interesting

that he makes his $ on the games not the box. He loses money on the box, and he's not going to lose $ so some hacker can build a Beowolf cluster of cheap Linux boxes.

BUT he's going about it the wrong way. The RIGHT way to do this is make it a physical bitch to modify the box, not to get lawyers involved.

  6. One little known fact regarding hard disk capacity on Mass Storage Leaves Microchips in the Dust · · Score: 1

is that the capacity of the disk is inversly proportional to the 12th power of the distance of the head to the disk.

That means that everytime you halve the gap, your capacity goes up 2 to the 12th or 4096 times.

Your old 20 MB disk would hold a little over 80 GB if that happened. And it DID, don't you see....

I believe that there is a parameter called the 'contempt factor' that takes this into account.

It is used to increase the computer's score and decrease the opponent's to make the computer take aggressive chances with a novice that it wouldn't with a pro.
