the pictures are not the dangerous part. The dangerous part is the community. Being in a community of people that encourage such behavior, share ideas and tecniques, and most of all consider you *normal* is what can incide people to do the most amazing things..
My sister was the highest-placed girl at a big video game tournament (Smash Melee) at UT Austin recently. She said that an uncomfortably large amount of her defeated opponents.. tried to feel her up in an "after game hug" (wtf?).
A little OT perhaps, but what the hell.
Here's another sneaky one: my blog's been hit by multiple spiders (badly behaved of course) that do nothing but leave comments with a porno / herbal / penis-mightier site and a spate of keywords.
They're not trying to spam me; they're increasing their google rank. Bastards.
That's not true at all. One of the tenets is that people can sell or trade their rights, provided it is by their free will..
Low wages and a company store are a contract that libertarians would advise workers to "walk away from." But when there's really no alternative, well there you go.
OT: a warning about the spam thing. Most spams use fake return-to addresses to cut down on bounces and complaints, so if you send a virus or a webbug.. you'll porbably bounce or hit an innocent. Just had to say it.
Once upon a time, machine shops only had one expensive motor. Belts were used to attach it to different machines for different purposes. Then motors got cheap..
The problem that Mr. Sposky doesn't address is... and there is absolutely no evidence that a GUI is an efficient way to handle those problems. Yet rather than use the best currently available tool (the command line and scripts), or devise a better one, Mr. Sposky and the Windows advocates would have us shoehorn every task into a GUI + complex API world.
If you read the article, you would notice that the ENTIRE POINT was that there isn't one true way of doing things. The secondary point is that some *nix people are pulled into some sort superiority complex.
I've seen (and heard) the ipod; it's a beautiful piece of work. Build quality is excellent. But to answer your question, here's why the ethernet port is a sexy thing:
Plug in the karma into your local network and it becomes a driverless mp3 server. You can copy to and from using any computer on the network.. geek appeal aside, this is handy on a college network.
Totally agree. And it's true even in college in regards to wasting resources--do we really need to replace all the flatscreen monitors every 3 years? DOes every lecture need to be on powerpoint?
I've actually seen that report before.. but I agree that there's a resolution limit to film. I estimated 18megapixels per 35mm frame--but you need to read my comment more carefully; I'm talking LARGE format. If you can scan in a large format negative at the same resolution as 35mm, you're going to break a gigapixel.
Too lazy to work out the math, but I'm willing to bet that somewhere there's been a gigapixel image--probably a high resolution scan of a large-format negative.
A good 35mm scan is 55megabytes with 3 8-bit channels, or 18.33 megapixels. They can be scanned higher than that, of course--but you need some pretty smooth film to do it. 35mm film is 24mm x 18mm in size. Large format film goes up to 6 x 17 *inches*, not including freak film like large format panoramic wraparound business.
Scan that in at the same resolution, and it may or may not break 1 gigapixel. I told you, I'm too lazy to do the math, but a rough estimate is 1.8gigpix.
Objections:
a) you can't prove this has happened before. Large format is pretty much only used for artistic purposes these days.. and from what I've seen of photographers scanning in their film, they usually just slide the thing up to MAX and let it rip. I mean, these people are really really anal about quality--there's no way they'd settle for less.
b) it's not digital. It is the moment it's scanned. When the the A to D conversion happens is irrelevant.
Also, it has the benifit of being a "single photograph"; that is to say, a moment in time.
I blew a power circuit in my dorm room last week. Took out all the plugs on the left side, which I then learned were connected to each other. Also learned that my primary UPS is a bit slow to switchover..
At the time: Computer, laptop, 19 and 17 inch tubes, klipsh speakers, 200watt-second studio strobe, slave light, and rice cooker.
What's to be done? I ran an extension cable from the other side of the room. A few days later, they reset the breaker and everything worked again.
Nah, it's weird indeed. With all due respect to the quality of their products, Apple tends to have a very "control" attitude.
I talked to some employees about it. They said that everything in the store was copyrighted; in fact, one specifically said "we don't know what you're going to do with the pictures. they might end up on the internet or something" (paraphrased).
I've taken the camera into theaters and whatnot as well, but their store is the only place I've been asked to leave (I didn't have a camera bag with me, so I guess I couldn't put it away). Well, there was that dinner club in HK where the busboy took it away, but that was semi-formal and my camera bag was made of duct tape.
If you start shooting though, lots of places get strangely angry. From worst to least,
Already done. The OTHER segway (and IMHO, the better of the two). The ibot.

Naked Ascii art?

A 200GB drive is about the same size as 5X 40gig ipods, however. And cheaper than even one of them.

I really wish this site would place a disclaimer--it keeps popping up on slashdot and elsewhere. Always confuses people and wastes time. bah.

Bump.
To get around this "problem", most spam mailers actually DO send one mail per person.. they just do it a few million times.

The 20gig karma is $290 at walmart.com
Plug in the karma into your local network and it becomes a driverless mp3 server. You can copy to and from using any computer on the network.. geek appeal aside, this is handy on a college network.
But the karma has built-in ethernet, no copying restictions, and is much cheaper.
that said, neato. looks way too much like a gamecube.

I know it's a joke, but while it may not "work" in the sense that it's useful.. they've certainly made a few billion off it.

You're being sarcastic, right? Because I think the mods didn't get it..
Once again, it's absolutely amazing that the Intel engineers didn't think of this basic point!

I am sooooooo clever.

1. Apple Stores
2. Airport Security Checks.
3. Starbucks
4. Urban Outfitters
well, #2 got as all searched. my bad.
