    Eastman Kodak, the last remaining manufacturer of silver halide professional photographic film ceased production today, 1500 workers in Rochester, New York are now without jobs.

    Maybe not today, but soon...

    They could have made a niche for themselves in the embedded market. There's plenty of room for fast, low-power x86 despite the ARM's and Power PC's. The problem is that they didn't go after it.

    The embedded market requires processor chips that have integrated peripherals - serial ports, ethernet, digital I/O, along with glue logic so that low speed flash memory and I/O can be easily attached to it. Transmeta went for the laptop market and only paid token attention to the embedded market.

    Dispite the lack of peripheral support, I tried to get information from Transmeta about using their parts in embedded applications. I filled out nondisclosures and market survey qualification forms and got nothing in return.

    All this is sad, but not new. They had the arrogance of a company that is certain they are doing things The Right Way and no humility to listen to perspective customers.

    They might have been a little more humble and responsive if Linus hadn't worked for them.

    Yet again, the internet bandwidth gets sucked away by something it was not orginally designed for. Instead of supporting 10-20 laptops checking email and news, we'll have 2-3 phones sucking up all the bandwidth while the yuppies and teens chat.

    I don't like it. I don't want to hear more cell phone chatter in my coffeeshop hotspot.

    Getting hit with a "joe job" is sometimes used as an act of revenge for a protest or flamewar. Best to keep your home email address out of the limelight for that reason.

    We transferred a rather large business checking account to them from another bank. We do frequent international wire transfers and that might be why we got them. BTW, there was no charge for them.

    As far as I know, nothing came of it, alledgedly because nobody wanted to do clinical trials since it couldn't be patented.

    I have 2 hacked series 1 Sony Tivo's. TCP/IP over ethernet, Bash prompt with telnet, ftp, web-based remote control and downloading media files.

    They are my favorite Linux machines.

    Why did you change from "I" to "we". If it's so fsking important to you, you defend that right at any cost, but don't ask "me" to. I don't remember ever signing up for that.
