Well there is a very important difference for the companies between going to cinema and paying $5, and downloading and watching it once for $5.

If a bounch of 10 of you will go to the cinema, the industry will earn 5x10 = $50. Since it is star wars, at least 3 of you will go and see it again, so they will earn another 5x3 = $15.

If a bounch of you meet in a friends house, the industry will earn only $5. Plus, some norwegian kid is bound to release a deDRM hack that will allow your geeky friends who would ordinarily go again to the cinema and watch it, to watch it for free. All these not taking into acount that you wont share the hacked movie with other friends.

I hear you saying that cracking a drm file will be too advanced for most people. Wrong again. Keep in mind that P2p, DVD-rips, bittorent where all advanced for most when they were all released.

Unless there is a way to enforce a pay-per-viewer license (hmmm.. the display is checking for all the different pairs of retinas that are pointed to it and then charges you?), no, we won't see any releases straight to the net.

In the last 30 years, the cost of organising the olympics, with the added ENORMOUS cost of security, it would make little sense for a country/city to actually want to organise/finance them on their own, no matter how much tourism promotion it will receive. That extra $1.5bn is going straight to the taxpayers.. I expect that my country will not be able to get over this debt for the next 25 years.

Still, I expect that no foreigner can understand how much to these games mean to us. I am greatly looking forward to them!!!

    - Ipod had a battery life of around 8 hours, while with iriver h140 i have experienced average battery lifes of 16 hours

    - ipod is smaller slightly smaller than iriver hseries

    - iriver remote has lcd screen, and provides access to ALL features of the device and to all the menus. you can use everything without ever touching the main module

    - iriver leather case sucks (why brown leather???) while ipods rocks

    - iriver has fm radio receiver, ipod doesn't

    - iriver has built in microphone (which is of very good quality for a built in microphone). also there you have the option to connect an external microhone

    - iriver has built in both optical input and outputs (which work as analogue as well)

    - iriver has WOW and SRS audio filters, i don't remember something like that existing on the ipod

    - iriver DOES NOT ANY SOFTWARE AT ALL in order to connect to a pc, apart from a basic USB storage driver. i find the simplicity of just chucking the songs you want to the device unparraled compared to the burden of having to install an extra piece of proprietory software

    - you have the option to install a media indexer on your pc (which is slightly buggy at the moment) which builds a database of all the songs you have in the device. after that you can broswe by genre / artist / album (normally you get a filemanager). the database however increases the boot time of the device to about 30 seconds

    - it plays MP3, WMA, ASF, WAV and OGG while ipod has AAC, MP3, AIFF, WAV

    - the 40gb iriver costs as much as the 20gb ipod

    - i believe that the ipod is much more of a fashion item, than a device that will meet the requirements of the average geek :)

  19. my W*O*R*K*I*N*G spam filtering method on How To Catch A Scammer/Spammer · · Score: 5, Informative

I have bought a domain (let's say johndoe.org) from a very cheap url forwarding company (at a rate of something like $15/year). It comes with unlimited e-mail forwarding aliases, and a "catch-everything" alias (let's say notexisting@johndoe.org), that forwards any e-mail send to non-existing alias to the default e-mail address that I have defined.
The default e-mail address (let's say secret@johndoe.org) is an alias that forwards everything to my real mailbox (let's say johndoe@aol.com). Of course, my real mailbox address, my catch-all address and the "default" address are not given to ANYBODY.

For my communication needs, or whenever asked, I just makeup a e-mail address (jonamazon@johndoe.org for amazon so that I will remember easily what address I use on the site). Since the alias is not setup in the mailserver, when amazon tries to contact me, the e-mail will follow the following alias path:
    1) jonamazon
    2) notexisting
    3) secret (default)
    4) real mailbox

When I see an spam message (once in two weeks!!!), I just divert the alias to point to an abuse address of a random spamhaus. The good thing, is that since I use random but descriptive addresses, I can see what websites actually harvest e-mails and sell them to spammers!!!
It is interesting to note that at some point I received e-mail that were addressed at some ridiculus random aliases (e.g. jesus@, happykitty@ etc) of my domain (clearly not used by me). Just an indication of the use of wordlists (of course every such alias got blocked).

I have not yet reached the levels of paranoia of giving seperate e-mail addresses to any of my friends of course :P

Anyway, it is not as complicated as it looks, and of course way less complicated than using bayesian filters and the like. And believe me, it works :)
