  1. Obvious Answer on Why the iPod is Losing its Cool · · Score: 1

The concept can be taken as far as to cutting down to a single power supply per rack.

The article mentions the distribution will be done using 48V for distribution - you will still need DC:DC conversion at the boxes. These DC:DC converters will need to be run at higher current than an AC:DC converter. Higher current can cause more series loss in the system as well leakage losses in the switching supply.

AC:DC converters, as mentioned in the article aren't really that ineffiecient (article itself quotes 90%). AC:DC converters are infact really DC:DC convertors, they just have a rectifier circuit to convert the AC to high volatge DC for DC:DC conversion.

And it's not like OSX is a bad OS for them to be pushing, if someone is curious and checks it out they probably won't be too dissapointed. Couple that with the fact that Windows XP is a few years old and is starting to seem a little dated. Windows will probably strike back a little come Vista but I guess only time will tell.

Great thing about this setup is that if I ever need to go anywhere my whole desktop PC is all of a sudden portable - I don't have to worry about copying data across to another PC. Your missing out on a good PC experience if you haven't tried this.

Especially when you see DALI is currently being pushed by lighting manufacturers such as Osram, Atco, Helvar and Phillips to name a few. Dali places a fair bit of intelligence at the lighting fixture, and can be easily intergraded to TCP/IP networks using such systems as Atco's windim@net. This allows for remote monitoring and control. Better yet DALI can be wired using standard 240v insulated cabling and can be run next to the mains wiring (no segregation). It really is a smart step foward for lighting control. Check it out http://www.dali-ag.org/

I have to agree with you here. I've just gone back to Fedora from running Gentoo. Gentoo just got to be too much trouble when i went to update my system - ie things would break quite often and I'd have to sit there injecting packages etc, just to get through a big list of world updates. No diss on gentoo here, just it was taking a little more maintenance than I like.

Currently I'm running Fedora Core 3 with Gnome and the whole thing just works so nicely out of the box. The little up2date tick in the system tray makes keeping up to date and patched a breeze, and to make things even easier I also have apt-rpm installed - this makes installing mp3 media players and stuff like that a breeze.

I also use this box for firmware development for AVR microcontrollers and it certainally works fine as a workstation.

If you've learn't your linux ropes and you keen to go back to a low maintenance distro, or if you want a hassle free linux, Fedora Core 3 certainally takes some beating.

Yeah, I have to say SMT is the way to go. I used to design all my boards using Though Hole Technology but recently I have changed to SMT boards and haven't looked back. Assembly is actually easier provided you stick to not-too-small components. It saves time too as you don't have to do that awful process of thread, pull, solder, cut for each component like you do with through hole components. It's more like solder pad1 , solder pad2, done! Things do get a little trickier when you need to mount ICs with high pin densities, but a little bit of solderpaste and solderwick goes a long way.

Any experienced solderer should easily be able to solder 2-pin passive components down 0603 size provided they have a decent soldering iron and some good tweezers.

Moreover, SMT boards have been shown to generally generate less noise than an equivalent through hole based board. Hence the boards are less likely to fail compliance testing such as FCC or CE.
