  1. Lured into buying games on Nintendo DS Hurts The Children! · · Score: 2, Insightful

The more obvious danger of any Nintendo system is the imminent addiction to Video Game stores, and the games sections of any major department store. Partial relief from high prices can be found in pawn shops, and on eBay, but the only known cure is complete cold turkey quitting.

Being lured into dangerous chats is a problem more likely from letting your kids sit in front of any Internet connection without ever checking what they are doing online.

I've noticed this "music effect" on moderation too. If I get even one mod point in a + or - direction, more are sure to follow in more cases than not, while equally good or bad posts will get no attention. That's part of the reason why it's important to post early, besides being at the top, you're more likely to get flagged for moderation.

Which is why Muslims can not be described as savages - they have a culture, and a civilization, it's just not our's. Who's to say for instance that burning infrastructure isn't the most effective way to bring about societal advancement in the end? It worked for the West in WWII, after all.

Burning things doesn't fit in the Western culture anymore, because we have the ability to get results through the courts, parliaments, and letter writing to stir up shit. Perhaps burning nice things is an unfortunate precursor to developing those rights?

In today's web of pharming sites, I hate to guess a website address of anything. I did a search today for Plantronics headphones, and only one link on the first page of google had the real website. Sometimes it's nice having "review" sites, but when you just want an official driver or spec sheet, Google should highlight the "official" page if it's a name brand or something so the "real" site will stil out. Advertisers might not like that though...

Mobs are traditionally anonymous ways to conduct agressive protests. Take Slashdot trolls for example, they feel empowered by their AC status and like minded loser buddies and lash out against the world by telling geeks about Natalie Portman being naked and petrified with hot grits. Muslim countries don't have democracies and you can be locked away for protesting something. There's a lot of mis-education and anger there, so when a chance to join an anonymous mob comes up, it doesn't really matter what the reason for the mob is, it's just time to vent like everyone else is doing. In the west we are lucky, we still have the "letter to the editor" and Slashdot to vent our anger on. Some people only have western embassies to leave their mark on without going to jail after.

I'm not saying it's a good thing they burn stuff that isn't theirs, but I'm saying it's understandable, and it's not because they are savages, it's because thir society is different and less developed.

Now if only websites had a way to offer a BT version of their download files, so that they'll never get Slashdotted again...

It's obvious that video games affect people's brains. Every experience shapes our world view. In other news: Breathing affects our lungs.

I remember playing Doom as a kid and being startled by imps or the growl of a pink beast coming up behind me. That doesn't mean that in the real world I'm going to be tricked by my brain into thinking there is an actual imp coming to get me if I hear a screech in the distance. It's the same as reading. When I read a Star Trek book, I'm not in the 24th Century, but a brain scan of my thought processes might indicate that. Humans like to immerse themselves in fiction, it's why so much of our entertainment is fiction based. Only nutty people would think that their special kid is seeing ghosts after they watch The Sixth Sense. Why would sane people try to accuse video games of making their kids try to fly, or race cars?

Every game will have a set and entertaining ending though just in case the player sucks, or doesn't want to participate on a given day.
