I can't read the artical because it's NYT, but I think their talking about the N-Gage platform, which is a development platform for all system 60 phones. As far as I remember it was a 3d sdk based on top of the symbian os and was a closed system only available to select companies.
>it requires significant changes to the driver model and that they couldn't back-port the changes to XP Most of that information came from Microsoft (directly, or indirectly). Some independant sources disagree: http://uk.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=409 13
You are correct. That's why the title says "Microsoft Office XML Formats? Defective by design" not "OOXML defective by design" He is dissing the Microsofts claims of transparency and openness of Microsoft Office XML
That's a good point. Opera is one of the reasons why I think it's better to have third party applications on the phone. The blackberry browser isn't that good because it's written by Blackberry, who have no experience in writing browsers, while Opera do nothing else but develop browsers. Likewise Safari is good becuase it is based on Konqueror
More interesting would be how it compares to Opera mini. It's quite an amazing program considering that it's written in java. It can handle nearly everything apart from flash. Also the opera server drastically reduces the amount of data sent saving you money - I don't think the iPhone does that.
If you'd dig a little deeper, I'd say you'd find the real root of the problem is that certain people working on the project aren't any good at their jobs, particularly management.. unfortunately any attempt at "fixing" the project will envolve the input from the same people that made the initial bad desicions.. so what is the solution? Obviously, not hiring people that aren't any good at their jobs.... but what if the person who is in charge of hiring people isn't any good at his job?
In java you can use floats or fixed point integers if you want. I would strongly advise against the fixed point though - it makes debugging a nightmare. It's interesting that mobile phones provide java acceleration hardware. Sony ericcson phones have jazelle which allows decient performance on 3d games, even though the processor is only a 200mhz ARM, probably a lot less than the Wii
"NoScript lets you allow JavaScript on the sites you trust " That only works if you visit the same web sites each day. Really what happens is you visit several new websites each day and when they don't work you spend ages trying to figure out why it doesn't work before you remember that you need to specifiaclly unblock the site.
There is an enormous amount of work done in the Java 3d api, unfortunately hardly anyone uses it - I counted only a handful of games made - most not really commercial quality. It's ironic that the mobile 3d version has had a lot more success, considering how limited mobile phones are.
Lack of user feedback is not the problem with the gimp. Users have being telling the Gimp programmers for years what's wrong with their UI. The problem is that gimp programmers ignore all critism of their UI and likewise they will ignore this ridiculously complicated solution to gather user feedback.
It's rather ironic that the processor has a Jazelle Java accelerator, considering what Steve Jobs said: "Java's not worth building in [to the phone]. Nobody uses Java anymore. It's this big heavyweight ball and chain."
No one has voiced it yet, but AMD's 65nm process is a failure. It's 65nm parts overclock worse than processors at 90nm process and that's probably why AMD are still producing all there high end parts at 90nm
> MS did fix stuff like having stupid directory names (e.g. "Documents and Settings" -> "users"), etc. I hate when people change names to be "more logical". Really, it just adds more confusion
> Going to 5MP probably achieves nothing as the sensor is so small. it achieves good marketing, becuase people still think that mega pixels has something to do with picture quality. Anytime anyone asks about a camera the first question is always "how many megapix?"

Yes.

Most of that information came from Microsoft (directly, or indirectly).

I would love to use Wine, but unfortunately I don't have Linux. Are there any plans to port Wine to Windows?
It'll be interesting to see if AMD actually get to deliver this technology before they run out of money (http://uk.theinquirer.net/?article=41700)
It's about the Chinese cloning industry. Only a small part of the artical deals with the iPhone. What is it with the iPhone fixation?
That's a good point.

Looks like your sense of humour got deadlocked during that post
Did anyone notice in that video that he had to click couple times to get some of the widgets to activate?
Maybe the mouse still has some advantage?

but wouldn't noscript cause other problems?
About 50% of all the websites I visit need javascript to function properly.

Aren't these things like the old "memory optimiser" scamware programs that came out with Windows 95

It's funny that you say that because I did notice my PC crashed now and again since I upgraded to a E6600.
Not to mention the fact that they overclocked it out of the case. Removing the case makes a big difference in the temperture
Jeff Jones was further quoting saying that there was no need to patch vunerabilities in Vista, because "nobody uses it anyway."
