This is not a different version of Windows, it's simply a version without Windows Media Player. This does not necessarily include the codecs that WMP uses. MS make their installation program for the Codecs delibrately dependant on WMP, specificly for leverage in court cases like this. The codecs could easily be installed seperately if they wanted to. So, users have to download a media player, big deal, at least it's the media player of their choice. Third party software that needs to play WMA files, and what not, doesn't need WMP, it only needs the codecs.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned it already. The phonograph is a technology that will never die and it plays songs so much better than any of those new-fangled 45's
I found this: http://www.earthtym.net/spacemyth.htm says that cosmic rays are much more harmful than gamma rays and "Without protection against cosmic rays, expected human survival in space would be 17.5 days." don't know how reliable the facts are on this site though
"skilled marketeers" yes, those are the people responsible for putting those little "genuine Grannie Smith Apple" labels on apples. I really love those guys, because sometimes I'm not sure if it's a bannana Im eating. And I so much love injesting the glue left over after peeling the little fucker off.
..if the same problem that happen to the Mars Polar Lander were to happen to the Rovers, both would actually be lost. I reason this because there were two seperately launched craft (the Polar Lander and a satellite) which both perished because of the same misunderstanding of imperial/metric between NASA and one of their contractors. More importantly though, is we have yet ANOTHER MARS related articical on Slashdot, YEAH! Keep them coming... I love that space stuff!
When Netscape went public, everybody knew it was a hot stock. It was offered at $16 and quickly went to $70 (sorry, these figures are from my head, so propably a bit inaccurate). However Joe Public had no chance to buy the stock at $16. Only the people on the inside (big stockbroking companies, etc.) had a chance to buy at the initial price. By the time, normal private investors got in, the stock had already gone up to $50.
"Raises some interesting questions about software reliability, I think. Did nobody think about running out of disk space?"
Just goes to show you we are all human, whether you are the NASA Lead Software Architect, or just a Joe Soap hacker you still will make the occasional blooper.
that's version 2.3 According to the review, the book includes a free 3.2 for Windows. I wonder does that mean you get a special license when you buy the book?
The most important difference: MFC is a discontinued product (as regards new features) and wxWindows is not. In fact the general GUI classes of MFC have hardly been improved at all since version 4.2. while wxWindows has been slowly improving over the years. As a result a lot of the classes in wxWindows are now more extensive and easier to use than MFC.
I was looking into using QT as a framework for a non-commercial project. I saw on their website that the only free Windows version available was so old that it wasn't really useful to me (too few features). Just now I checked their website I see no free Windows version at all.
there's more truth to what you say than you may realise. We're so used to the spellchecker correcting everything automatically, that when it's not available the spelling goes down the drain. If you were actually to go to the effort of proof reading using a dictionary everytime the chances are that you'll remember the correct spelling next time round.
MS could easily release an installation program to just install the WMA / WMV codecs and DirectShow and whatever, but they don't. They deliberly force you to install the latest Media player. There is no technical reason for this interdependancy. And what will happen (hopefully) is the EU will simply force them to provide seperate installtion of the backend dlls, and the front end apps.
Well, I didnt see any mention of 3kb exes in the Semantic warning. However, I know that there are viruses that can infect *any* exe file. This would mean that it can spread via any p2p network, not just Kazaa. And it's already been proven that a worm spreads faster than the Anti-virus manufactures can distribute patches, so there really is no 100% foolproof strategy.
I can only say that it's a sorry state of bias of the moderators that the origional post got such a high rank and yours didn't. Slashdotters have gotten mixed-up between the Microsoft co-operation, which is indeed evil and Bill Gates as a person, who is obviously getting this knight for his philanthropic activities. He has proclaimed to give away the bulk of his wealth by the time he is dead and already he is on target for this, if you take into account his age and the amount that he has already donated. His wealth is in mainly the form of MS shares, so obviously he can't sell the whole lot in one go (the stock price would plumet)
As I was watching the last Star Trek film, I was wondering, "why is this so boring" Then I noticed that most of the film takes place on the bridge, which is just a big room with a wide-screen TV in the middle and some swivel armchairs and formica covered desks... hell, it's just a badly furnished yuppie living room floating through space.

That assumes that all the radiation is coming from the sun, which is not the case for cosmic radiation
"outside the belts you'll kill the crew the next time there's a solar eruption that emits a lot of radiation"
Something that people seem to forget about when they propose sended people to Mars!

Maybe you don't want to work for a boss with pointy hair and write software that's specified by idiots.
Maybe for once you want to show them how it's done, to create a great product and take all the credit (and earnings) for it.
Not to mention a politics free environment, interesting technology and in the location of your choice.
When I try to install WM9 codecs... it tells me I need at least media player 7 to install
So, they can fine MS up to 10% of the precious year's earnings. That's a lot of money. Where does it go then?
Just curious.

Are you crazy? Everybody lies on their CV, including the person giving you the interview. It's a generally accepted fact of the business.
"at worst they will think that you were not born with the part of the brain that allows you to form your own thoughts and ideas"
I know many jobs where this trait is a requirement

Yeah, but there are also clear wheel tracks left in the ground where the rover drove... so at least the first few centimeters are soft
Just goes to show you great minds think alike... ;)
or at least bored minds think of the same corny punch lines
that there once was life on Mars, but also that they enjoyed malted milk drinks... no wait, that was *Olivine*...
